Terapin's Journal: 5 yrs running! Couch to Goofy, Fracture to Fab, Baby to Dopey. Comments welcome!

LOL - I don't think either gender has grossness cornered, frankly. I live with boys and know this first hand! :rotfl:

Had a good day! Lego store and lunch as planned. Bike ride with my son deferred.

Biked up to the Running Room where I run with friends and running buddies, and biked back. Ran in between.

Total biking: 10.5k
Total running: 5k

Came home to some homemade meatballs. Yum. Have the joy of sitting down to bill paying after the kids get off to bed. Full day indeed! :hippie:

Weigh-in day:

Down 1.5# in two weeks. Not bad. Total loss this month: 5.5# I'm really happy with that. I suspect my weight it a bit of water retention still - will weigh over next day or two when I don't feel bloated.

Total weight loss: 32#

Slow but steady wins the race, right? The weight loss is pretty good considering how much muscle I have built up at the same time. I have good biceps now, and rock hard quads and calves. My abs are getting much better, and I have shaved off inches. Last summer when I started this journey I was pretty doughy. Feel so much better!

Hello Carolynn, I found your journal!
The trail runs sound amazingly hard but fun!:woohoo:

Way to go on getting super fit! :worship:I think the way you feel and your measurement mean so much more than what the scale says.:goodvibes

Good morning. Happy Easter!

Today is sunny but cold here. Should warm up over the day but is sitting just above freezing right now.

On today's plan is 15-20 of core, followed by a run (plan for 6k) and then some biking to 'flush out the legs', likely another 5-6k.

I have to do some visits later, so hoping to get in my exercise this morning. DH and the kids are home due to the holiday, so it is a relaxing day.

Hope you all have a fab day!

Sounds like you have definitely been busy Carolynn! Love the birthday traditions too. Hope you did have a relaxing day and then a nice weekend!

Mike

Thanks Mike-

Did 15 minutes core/5.5k running at 7:50 per km/and 6.5km cycling. Feel very well exercised. My core was mostly abs and the dreaded planks. Ugh.

Dinner is a yummy treat: steak, mushrooms and onions, onion risotto, and steamed broccoli. YUM!

Good afternoon!

Yesterday I did 15 minutes upper body and 20 minutes core.

I got about 2 hours sleep then got called out to a birth. Climbed into bed around 10am, and got another 3.5 hours sleep. Am up now, eating breakfast and having coffee, then heading out for a trainer-prescribed tempo run. he wants me to do a 1k warmup, then 3km at 7:30/km, then another 1k warm up. If the weather isn't too bad I will do a short cycle. UPDATE: did my tempo run. Ran my PB 5k time. Did not bike. Lack of sleep and a bit dehydrated meant I called it a day after the 5k run. Will do some core and upper body tonight though.

The most exciting news is: I SIGNED UP FOR THE WDW MARATHON WEEKEND HALF MARATHON on Jan 12, 2013. Cool date: 12-01-13 or 01-12-13 I am fully committed (and committable!).

Great job! It's always nice to hit a PR. Kinda' pushes you to the next level and makes you want to improve even more! At least that's what it does for me! Congrats on registering for the half! The WDW in January will be my 1st full marathon. I'm nervous and excited all in the same breath.

Congratulations on committing to the full in 2013! I hope to do it in 2014. I'm hoping to get a Coast to Coast medal by doing another half in Disneyland next fall!

Yesterday was Coach day. Had a brutal trail run in Seaton Trail. 7k+ up very steep terrain, with lots of climbs and rough trail. Fell on my bum and slid about 10 feet down one descent :rotfl2: Apparently I still need to work on my bunny hopping downhill. Worked very hard and was almost non-stop running for 1:20:00. I think I took two walking breaks that were about a minute in that time. Was very challenged in this run, and coach was proud. At one point I was even getting teary because I felt like I was working too hard. Coach helped me work through it and keep going, and sure enough, didn't need to stop - it was all in my head. Coach said he was proud of me. I felt good afterwards but man it was tough.

I headed home and got into a nice hot bath as per my routine, and got called out to another client. Surprisingly I still had energy and didn't feel too sorry for myself. I was with my client all night, and finally fell into bed around 9:15 this morning. I slept until about 4 hours then am up now eating and drinking. COach wants 45 minutes of biking today, so I am going to get up and get going and do it before I pick up the kids, and perhaps have a nap when we get back. I knew this month would be busy. I have 4/9 clients birthed for the month, so I'm not out of the woods yet.

Coach has ordered an 8k run this Friday or Saturday, run as 2x 4k with a break in between. EEK! My longest distance yet.

Good morning!

In my efforts to reduce the shin pain I am having I got some new shoes yesterday (still doing the other things: magnesium, massage, chiro and massage by RMT for AR). I went to a new running store and they videotaped me walking and running. And despite that I have the flattest feet EVER, I don't actually over-pronate. I pronate a wee bit more than ideal, so I was fitted only for a support shoe (not control) in a Mizuno Wave Inspire. They are nice and comfy. My super awesome coach went with me to help. :lovestruc

He also signed me up for metabolic testing, and a demo of a lung trainer for my asthma. I'll try it all - you never know what you are missing!

Tried them out last night for a 5k run (figured that I would stop if I encountered pain) and it was good! Had a nice fast (for me) run of 5k at 7:20/km! I was happy with that - my fastest run yet! And it was a hilly out and back.

So it was a good day. I am going broke on shoes though! :cool1:

Wanting to weigh in but being a good coachee - have to wait for another 9 days to hit the q. bi-weekly. Sigh.

Packed a good lunch today: low-fat refried beans, ww tortillas, green salsa, a fresh salsa, a bit of cheese, and some peppers. Lots of fibre, vegetarian, and some good protein. Breakfast is coffee, grapefruit and some cottage cheese.

Good morning!

Heading out shortly for an 8k run that my trainer has prescribed I run in just over 60 mins. Eek!

Seeing as I can't weight myself until next Saturday, I decided to measure myself. At work all the nurses were telling me how much change in two week they have seen. All I can say is WOW! I am in major fat burning and toning mode.

Measurements today:

Waist: 39.5" (In the 30s!!!!!!!)
Hips 47.5"
Bust 48

W to H ratio: .83 Still working on this!

What makes my measurements really remarkable is that only 3 months ago, they were this:

Waist: 45.25
Hips: 51.75
Bust 50.5

That's over a FOOT of loss in 3 months. That is how hard I have been working. So happy.

Ran my 8k in 61minutes! Yay! So sore in the shins now. Off to ice them once I pick up the kids in 15 minutes.

You're doing such a great job! It's always a wonderful day when you can see actual concrete results such as that! I often look back at my training log (not my journal, but the log I kept throughout my process) and it almost brings a tear to my eye. Definitely makes you feel better about yourself! You know you can't let up, but at the same time you've got new motivation for more progress!!!!

Thank you!

My coach was very pleased with me and my progress.

He dropped the bomb that he wants me to run the half marathon sub-2 hours. EEK! That means shaving 1.5 mins/k off my time now! However, we have 8 months to train me up, so I guess anything is possible?!?

To make this a photojournal, here are some photos of my journey so far:

This was my first 5k last September. It was the Energizer Night Run in Toronto and my sister ran it with me.

This is my second 5k in October. I ran it by myself and I recognized that finishing by yourself with no one else there is sucky. This was the Walk, Run and Roll 5k for Variety Village held in Toronto:

This is my third 5k held on January 1, 2012. It was a brutal day: wet, cold, windy and hail. It was held down by the lake in Ajax. It was the Running Room Resolution Run.

This was my 4th 5k held January 6th 2012. It was the Family Fiesta 5k at WDW. What a terrible photo!

Had a good day yesterday. Ran 9.2km in the Seaton Trail again. This was slower this time as I was still spent from my fast 8.1km the day prior. Still, felt good to be trail running/hiking for 1h45m.

Today I am going for an hour bike ride, upper body weights and core. Tomorrow is another running day with coach.

My new shoes are doing well. The shin pain seems lessened, but I do have a new blister on my toe from the shoes. I guess I still have yet to find the perfect shoes.

My 10km is in one month!! EEK!

Wow Carolynn, you can really see your progress in your pics!! That is awesome!! Thank you for sharing your efforts with us.

Good morning! Having a cup of coffee to start the day. Gotta get the kids up and out, then have a visit to do for one of my recently birthed Mamas, then I need to work on the house (le mess!). Tonight I meet with my trainer and we are going to the dreaded track. Eek!

Last time we went to the track I was working pretty hard with 400m sprints (well, my sprints which are slow!) and recovery runs. In all we put in about 5k last time.

My shins are still sore, but a little better. My feet took a pounding in the new shoes on my trail run. My toes are a bit sore at the ends as these shoes are not as big as my other shoes that I usually use for trail running. I think all the downhill running caused some toe-hitting-shoe pain. I also have a big blister on my big toe where it rubs the shoe. I hope that I didn't make a big mistake with these shoes... will find out over the next week or so. I will experiment with tying them differently and just road running.

Feeling good about the weight loss - weigh in is in 5 days but I know it is good. In fact, I am having trouble with not having an appetite. My trainer is wondering if I am subconsciously rejecting food in order to lose more weight. I said I didn't think so but he laughed and reminded me of the 'SUB' in 'sub-conscious'. I just find that I am working out a lot and then don't have an appetite afterwards. And because I eat a few hours before a workout, if I wait until an hour or so after a workout, it ends up that I am missing meals. I try to eat a light snack before working out like a banana, and fruit sometimes appeals after a workout. I am trying to get in protein, protein, protein but I find that sometimes eating is just mind over matter.

I am going to try to eat smart and plan what I need to eat in a day to really keep track of what I am eating. My coach points out that not eating is too hard on my body with all the training I am doing and I get that. It is a new phenomena that food is unappealing!!!! It's like a dream come true! :rotfl2:

Have a great day everyone!
