Odd Question...

I know I'm going to be on vacation... but I'm an avid news junkie - I watch the news religiously in the mornings and read at least one paper a day. What are my chances of getting the news while on a cruise? I'm just curious - as I'm on vacation, it won't be a true heartbreak, but I'd like to prepare for the lack of up-to-date news for 8 days!

You'll be able to watch the news on your stateroom TV. And I imagine you might be able to pick up some newspapers while you're in port.

We last cruised in 2009 and if I remember correctly, I think there were news channels on the in room TV's. I think there was CNN or something like that.

I believe that they have CNN as one of the channels in available in the stateroom.

We cruised in January, when that one ship sunk. My dad was glued to the TV, I belive it was CNN, watching for updates on that situation. So there should be no lack of you being able to watch the news.

I can relate to this. I went on vacation once and didn't watch the news or read a paper for several days. I was traveling with several US Marines. One day, we were walking down the street in Palma and saw a headline (in Spanish) that we couldn't really translate but we got the jest of it when we recognized the words US Marines and war. It was the start of the first Gulf War. We were on the phone back to the base within the hour (fortunately, there was no recall). Ever since then I can’t relax on vacation if I don’t have access to the news (preferably in English).

The only problem you'll have is that you can only watch news inside your stateroom when onboard the ship.

I was on the Wonder when DevGru SEALs took out Bin Laden. Although I knew early coverage would be poor, I wanted all the information I could get - but I didn't want to be in my stateroom. I had to settle for room service and an open door to the balcony.

They had a tv on the news station, though on mute, in the Cove Cafe every morning last week when I was getting my coffee.

Since Disney owns ABC/CNN I'd be really surprised if they didn't have at least one CNN channel available.

I know there is CNN but I also believe I saw MSNBC when we were on the Fantasy, they'll at least have some form of news. No worries!

Stateroom TV gets CNN and BBC--it sometimes goes out depending on where the ship is located, but this is rare. If you are on a cruise of longer than 7 nights, there is a "headline of the day" or something similar news sheet that was placed under our door each morning on the Trans-Atlantic and Med cruises.

On the wonder, I remember seeing the news at the cove cafe TV's and sometimes in diversions.

I am a big news watcher in the morning, usually while I'm getting ready for the day. Even on vacation, I will put the TV on and watch the news while I get ready for our adventure. One year, we were at Disneyland and I had done my usual routine. When I got back to the room for a afternoon nap, I had all these messages on the phone from my brother telling me about an earthquake hitting Hawaii. My parents were in Hawaii for their vacation!!! I remember he yelled at me and said "Don't you ever watch the news???!!!" Well, I had already taken off for the day before that earthquake hit!!! It is a weird feeling to be sort of out of the loop!

Which is exactly why I like to watch the news - and read one paper a day. Thanks for all the replies - at least I know when I'm onboard I can get some kind of news without hitting the internet eek for it. And I had already planned on getting a newspaper or two while in port - except for CC. I imagine they won't have may newspapers on the island! At least if they aren't Mickey-News!

Now only if time would fly so I can go on my cruise! I'm already hankering to plan my next one!!

Besides CNN & BCC, during the normal news hours (morning, afternoon, evening) you can watch ABC news. It is channe 7 New York. Though it will show what is going on inn NY, you will also see what is going on in the world. So you can definitely get your news fix via TV in your stateroom but I don't know about the newspaper.

My DH has to read/watch the news constantly; however, he found the news stations on the ship lacking. International items were covered ok, but more local US was hit and miss. You will have some news, but it may not be complete. We ended up having to get internet access.

CNN is owned by Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) which is the second largest media conglomerate behind Disney.
