We booked our flights over a month ago for our Oct. Trip. They say nonrefundable. We still want to fly and with the same airline but we are now noticing some added flights that are nonstop. Can we change them now? We are newbies at this...can you tell?

We were flying Airtran and they changed our departure time just slightly, so we contacted Airtran and they said we could change our flights with no charge, but since we booked through Disney, we would have to do it through them. Well, they were going to charge us $150 per ticket to change! Had we just booked the airfare ourselves, we could have changed with no problem. Needless to say, I book our own airfare now!

ETA: Still, I would call and see what they say. It won't hurt and maybe they've changed their policy a bit?

Another reason you should NEVER book airfare through a third party. Always with the airline. There's no adavantage to it in the vast majority of cases.

Regardless of how you booked, you will at least be subject to the airline's rules and charges regarding changes. Most airlines--with the exception of Southwest, JetBlue, and maybe one or two others--will charge a change fee of $150 per ticket for any changes on nonrefundable fares (unless the change is being requested as a result of changes they have made to their schedule). It doesn't matter if you booked direct with the airline or through some third party, they are going to hit you with the change fee.

There certainly are some situations where booking through a third party limits what you can do to manage your travel after booking, but for the most part avoiding change fees is very difficult.

It's going to depend on the airline. Some airlines allow you to make "no fee" changes if THEY change the schedule by 'x' amount (some are minutes, some are as many as two hours).

Unless you're flying SW (and possibly JetBlue), you probably won't be able to change without paying a "change fee" (barring the airline making a change). You can call Disney and ask (you have nothing to lose), but ask about change fees.

Sorry to say JetBlue charges a change fee. I am flying JetBlue for the first time in June and changed my flight from a night one to the early morning non-stop and I was charged a $100 change fee plus and increase in the fare. We are flying SW for the first time in Aug. and they don't charge for any changes and are great if the fare goes down with giving you credit for it.

Just want to put out there the SW "credit":
1) Can only be used by the person who the ticket is issued to.
2) Must be used within 1 year of the purchase date (I believe the original purchase date).

I am having buyers remorse right now too with regards to airfare. We are flying SW for the first time out of Chicago, which is 2-1/2 hours away because I thought the price wasn't going to get any better. Just yesterday, out of our home airport, Delta round trip is now $50.00 cheaper per ticket, which would be a savings of $350.00 for us BUT I am now stuck with SW.

But doesn't Delta charge for checked luggage? Or were you not planning on checking luggage? If you are checking luggage, I think most airlines charge $25 for the first bag each way, which would totally negate the saving of $50 per ticket.
