GAC and other ammenities?

Hi all -

I posted some time ago about my dh who was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. It seems his cancer is responding to the chemo treatments he's had so far and when we spoke with his dr. recently he saw no reason that we should cancel our trip in June. His dr. also feels at that point that we can push one treatment back a week to allow him over 2 weeks of recovery time after his chemo treatment, they'll just reschedule the week we get back intstead. Dh will be about halfway through his course of chemo treatments at that point....

Of course we'll be touring differently from our usual routine (we will now also have a 6 month old in tow on this trip, as well as dd8), and dh and the baby will have in a built in nap/rest schedule. Fortunately we've been enough times at this point that parking dh in the shade with the baby and stroller will be just as enjoyable for him as riding rides - especially if a dole whip is involved.

I was wondering what exactly a GAC provides? Does dh wait for us somewhere else while the rest of the family goes through the line? Is each ride different?

I know each park has a first aid station if he needs it....and at this point I'm not sure we'll need/rent a wheel chair (we can do that at the park right?).

Also, I thought I read at one point about a special cleaning you can have done in your room before you arrive....could someone expand on their experiences with that? What exactly does that entail? Is there an extra fee for having that done?

Each park has first aid station plus trained emts if needed just alert a cm if you medical attention. Disney bought them golf cart ambulances where they have medical equipment and stretchers so they could if need bring him to first aid or provide further medical attention if needed. Each park has wheelchair and ECV to rent but they will be expensive if needed more then one day so it might be better to rent one from an out side place will get better rates. If you call Disney they can request the special cleaning they won't charge you extra for it I am sure their other disers that CNA give more info on that.

Wheelchairs/and ecvs can be rented at the parks. You can also rent offsite for a lower cost. Companies are listed in the sticky.

To request a special clean you need to call special requests and tell them what you need done. There is no charge.

The special cleaning is good for peace of mind. We had that done when my daughter was on chemo and greatly immunocompromised (she was on daily chemo at the time).

If you need accommodations for mobility, WDWs answer is to rent a WC or ECV. Each GAC is tailored to the individual and his needs. There is no one size fits all. Each person is different--just a diagnosis is no help.

Many rides are set up so that an ECV or WC can go through the standard line with you. If your husband chooses to do that, he can go through the line with you and then exit through the "chicken exit" when you get ready to ride. That way, he would have less time just sitting by himself with the baby.

I would definitely rent off-site. That way he would have the WC or ECV at the resort. Plus it is a long way from ride to ride and from parking or busses to the front of the park where the rental units are kept. And another consideration is that the WCs the park rents are not in great shape and the ECVs are very cumbersome. They also do run out of rentals on a regular basis (especially a couple of hours after park opening!
