I've become slightly obsessed with making Fish Extenders! I originally only meant to make one for our cruise, and then people kept asking about them and I kept coming up with more ideas and now I'm making about two a week. I'm currently working on Snow White and Mrs. Potts/Chip/Cogworth/Lumiere ones. I'm now convinced that I must make an entire Princess line as well as Sailor Disney among others. It's become an obsession! Each one is a lot of work but I've been loving the creative flow.

Here's the ones I've made in the last two weeks:

Minnie Mouse: (my First one)

These look super cute, however, how deep is the pocket? will the gifts fit in there? We have 100 cabins participating in our swap, would more then 1 person be able to put their gift in there? maybe a deeper pocket or something to "hold" the gifts? I like the idea!

My question is similar to that of LizzysMom.

They look absolutely beautiful and I must say, "Well done!" My concerns when looking at them are:

  1. How deep are the pockets?
  2. How sturdy is the entire piece? (Remember, people will be stuffing things in it several times a day.)
  3. On the same lines as above, can it hold heavy items? (You don't know what people may give you.)

Overall, they are gorgeous. My questions all point towards functionality.

ETA: I just went back and looked at them again. You are really talented. They are just beautiful.

...We have 100 cabins participating in our swap....
Seriously?!?! That is a HUGE group! I don't know if this has been discussed with your group, but you may want to divide into two groups. Delivering 100 gifts will take a VERY long time. Heck, delivering 30 felt like a huge undertaking once onboard. Just a thought. :)

YUp - they did split into groups, with the majority of the people wanting to do everyone. We have plenty of time to do it - it's the 15 night Hawaii Cruise.

Cheers-

I make two kinds of Fish Extenders. One kind (Belle and the whole Princess line) is made with heavy fabric which is also lined on the insides and sewn twice over. The pockets are about a foot in height and the bottom tier is almost two feet in length. There are three pockets, so there's quite a bit of room in them. It's heavy duty.

The other kind is felt, which is both hot glued and then double secured with hand stitching all the way around the pockets. They're quite big, most about 8x10. These are more for lighter items and display, but they won't break easily (in fact I just got done trying to rip one apart because it was slightly off center and I had a very hard time doing so!)

For my personal use, these are big enough. If I was making them for someone else, I could easily customize them to make them bigger. The heavy duty Princess ones should be able to hold A LOT though as is.

Very creative ideas! You need to start offering them on ebay & etsy!

Thanks! I had a few people ask me about making them so I put a few of them up for sale but I'm mostly waiting until I get better with ideas.

OMG those are amazing!!!! I am so glad we are not on the same cruise! Mine are going to be made out of pirate pencil pockets! LOL. :)

Love Belle, amazing!!!!

I ordered ours for our honeymoon cruise, I wish I had a sewing machine or I would totally try to copy your idea ;)

these are adorable. You are much more creative than me. I am using 8" x 8" tote bags from Walmart to make mine.
