with (if you had choice) if you had XXXTRA luggage?

delta
airtran
spirit
american
united

thanks all. i'm on their sites searching this, but want live opinions.

United, because I am a FF of that airline and get free checked luggage (which I usually don't need because I almost always do carry-on only). They also give free checked luggage to military and their families, so I could take advantage of that as well. Plus I get free E+ seating, which is a big bonus.

Out of your list, the airline I would never fly would be Spirit, for many reasons.

Delta or American.

Spirit doesn't serve my airport but I would avoid them if they did.

Never flown AirTran.

United has a proud tradition of stranding me places that no other airline comes close to matching.

Yes to Airtran; have flown with them probably 100 times with no real issues.

Delta has the most constant delays for me and lost baggage. It's so bad, I've avoided them for 5 years.

I would consider American.

Best of luck to you

Whichever has the most convenient service from your airport and the lowest fares incl baggage.

Flown Delta and AirTran. Both were fine. In order to get a decent price on Delta though we had to drive 3 hours to a bigger airport. We were able to fly AirTran last year out of our home airport for a great price. That's not happening this year. We are flying Southwest out of Chicago but we got a great rate, not too early morning non-stop flight, and no baggage fees so it is worth the 2-1/2 hour drive for us.

I definitely agree. Except for Spirit, I've flown all of those airlines over the past 3 years and I would say they're all pretty much the same and the only reason I would choose one of them over another is based on price and convenience. My two favorite airlines are Southwest and JetBlue, but they aren't on your list.

I am curious what XXXTRA luggage means? Lots of suitcases? Oversize or weight luggage? The fees vary and can make a huge difference in your choices...

I would eliminate Spirit and then go with the flight that had the best times. If there is a tie I would pick the flight that uses Boeing aircraft.

Airtran with an upgrade to Business Class to get 2 free suitcases for each person.

I would avoid Spirit. They are a small company and I am surprised they dont' charge you to use the bathroom on the plane or to put your bag in the overhead bin.
We love Airtan. Mainly because rows of seats are two on one side so there less of a chance of being stuck with a middle seat.

This. That being said, we fly Delta a lot because my DH is a frequent flyer and our bags fly for free.

Spirit actually charges for carry on bags. And they may charge you to put them under by the legs of the flight. So if you have a lay over thats 2 legs.

Here is a chart I found that compares all the airlines you asked about.

Per this website Airtran is the cheapest.

I prefer AirTran among this group. You can find some decent fares with them. Yes, there is a baggage fee, but that's the norm lately.
I have had no issues when flying AirTran....can't say the same thing for Delta.

We love Airtran, too. BUT...we've only flown on planes with 3 seats on both sides, so definitely depends on what size plane you're on.

The one with the best times for the best price/least fees.

I prefer AirTran to Orlando for the non-stops. However, they will no longer service my local airport after June 2. I am flying Delta to Orlando next week because they had a $134 roundtrip fare! American is my choice because I like using their FF miles. If they ever beat Delta's fares, I'd prefer to fly them to Orlando.

true, if the numbers don't crunch, I'd still go with AT coach, and pay for the extra bags not to include overweight ones, scary charges! Might be worthwhile for OP to look into shipping extra baggage if items are really needed while on vacation.
