Castaway Cay 5k

We were just on the Magic 6 night Western Caribbean, and my DH and I walked the CC5K with a friend. We got bibs and medals as well, and there was a special CC5K t-shirt that you could purchase. Since we didn't pay to do the race, I thought the $22 for the new t-shirt was a bargain! The CM in charge told us we were the first Magic cruise to have the opportunity to buy the shirts!

scrapbookmomma74 - Was the shirt for sale in a shop or offered only at the time of the race?

Has anyone seen the CC 5K T-shirts on the Dream yet?

I have all kinds of questions....
1) How do you sign up for the race?
2) Do you have to do it before you board or can you decide at the last minute?
3) We will have a ten year old with us...what do we do with him? Can he come and wait for us? It seems like it would be easier to not have to go back to the ship once you are done with the race. Not sure when the kids club is open on the ship or on the island? :confused3

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

the shirts are not on the ship, just in the shops at CC to purchase after the race.

pretty sure there are strollers for rent on CC and/or on the ship.

those asking about kids and the race, it IS an adults only event...I just went back and checked my navigator and it is listed on the chart under "just for adults" and on the special CC insert it says "ADULT runners meet at 8:45 for the race" (emphasis mine)

Love, love, love your blog. I have done several 5k's but I will be soon training for the Princess 1/2 for February 2013. It's on my bucket list to do before I turn 40 in August of 2013.

I love the shirt, definately need to get that! I can't wait to do this.

I have a lot of the same questions as the PP so hopefully someone can answer. I definately do not want to go back on the ship once I am off.

You must not have read my blog post in the original post ;) just kidding! You just show up and sign your name and room number on a piece of paper.

it is adults only. I'm sure one of the kids clubs is open by 9:00 in the morning?

They did have a small box you could leave personal items in during the race, but it really wasn't big enough to hold a ton of beach bags/gear and I wouldn't want to leave all my stuff unattended there. It did take an extra few minutes to walk back to the ship, but I was thankful for a cool shower, changing clothes, putting on sunscreen etc. in the AC. I just had ll my stuff laid out on my bed ready to go so when I got back from the race I didn't have to do a bunch of running around looking for my camera, sunscreen, magazines, sunglasses, etc.
hope that helps!

Okay so that was my main questions about going back to ship. I was thinking that DH and kids could get off and just meet me at CC so that we can walk over to family beach together. But I agree it might be a better idea to take a quick shower and then head out....

Thanks

So excited for this! In an effort to lose my baby weight, I'm on week 7 of a 9-week Couch to 5K and this is my goal on the June 24 DisUnplugged Podcast Cruise!!!!!

Thanks for the inspiration!

Funny I actually did read your blog but I must have missed the details. I have never run a 5k but would like to and I think the Castaway Cay one would be very memorable so I am considering it. I'm a little afraid of the heat and I have plantar fasciitis so those two things make me hestitate. At least if the run makes the plantar thing flare up, it will be the last day of the cruise, right? And I would do the sunscreen stuff before the race and then just jump in the water for a cool off.....we'll see! Thanks for the great info!

It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be going back to the ship. i was grateful to be clean again!

you will do great! It is hot, but take it slow...there is plenty of water, and I know people who run/walked and did fine!

thank you. :) You will LOVE princess, I ran it this year!

I must say that I LOVE most of the changes they've made to the 5K. We made our own t-Shirts on a previous cruise for our group of DISer's who ran the race. They didn't have bibs or medals - in fact, the CM didn't even wait for anyone to finish. He finished and disappeared. The rest of us just ran for our own edification. I was disappointed not to get the certificate or water bottle that they had distributed on previous cruises - since this was the first 5K that I had run. I mentioned it as I returned to the ship and that night they magically appeared in my stateroom...

But that time there were no age limits - everyone who wanted to run did. There were several kids who ran with their parents (and finished well ahead of me BTW!). This year my daughter is in Girls on the Run and I am her running buddy. We will do the 5K together in May before our cruise, and I thought it would be great to continue that tradition at Castaway Cay. I must say that that change disappoints me. My DD could use all the encouragement she can get and if she can finish a 5K, she should be able to do it at Castaway Cay too. I'll probably run it anyway - so she'll definitely get my medal!

I read your blog and thanks it sounds great all the changes

I like that there is a medal even if it is plastic it is still nice. I am running this on my cruise in Nov and then running the wine and dine 1/2 marathon when I get off the cruise.

I have to say that running in the tropics is a lot different, I ran often in Iraq and was used to extreme heat but nothing could have prepared me for the humidty the last time I ran the 5K

Sounds like the start of this is all the way closer to the end of the family beach. If this is so I REALLY LIKE THIS CHANGE the time I ran it leaving from the ship on my way back I smacked a kid who walked right in front of me mid stride. I was MORtified I did not like running through the crowded area of family beach back to the ship.

Yes the walk back would suck, I will have to think about this if I will run with my swimsuit under my running shorts and then take a dip right in the ocean or go back to the ship... HMMM

I will be the only in my family running so I am sending DH to get the good spot we always try to get and then DD can stay there and he can come cheer me on YEAHHHHH

A few comments. I ran the CC5K on our 7-night Western cruise (3/17-3/24).

1) Shirts were available for purchase at the 2nd gift shop ( the one by the bike rentals)

2) I don't know exactly what the rule is, but we had some kids running the 5k. In fact, there was a family of 5 that ran. The dad stayed back and ran with his daughter. My guess is that she was in the 11-12 range...

3) We did not walk to the start. We got on the tram and it takes you right to the start/finish line. You can also take it right back to the ship (unless you get on the wrong tram - the one to Serenity Bay -like I did...).

Well...if they don't allow kids I hope they consider doing a fun run or something for the kids. I might have to leave a comment on the comment card and maybe they'll add in the future...:cool1:

just a guess, but I bet Disney doesn't want to liability of having kids running the race that don't want to run with their parents. Back in the loop it is very woodsy and they could easily run off, get hurt, be alone, etc. and not part of a "kids club" so maybe that is one reason why.

good plan! DH and I both run so no one to go save spots!

maybe they will, good luck!

Thank you for this great post!!!! I am really excited to run the CC5K. I am starting to train for my CC5K when I am on the Dream on 6/15.

Looking forward to adding the T-shirt to my collection of Disney shirts. :)
no problem, good luck!

yes, if you look back a couple of pages someone posted a photo of the shirt. I forgot to go back and buy one, oops!
they gave us the option of taking the tram as we walked up to it, but everyone just kind of looked at each other and kept walking. I think everyone was afraid to not look tough enough ha!
On the navigator it is under the just for adults column, and it also says "all adult runners meet here" etc. etc. I think if after reading that still bringing your child is not cool....but then again I am a rule follower. :)

Did you see the post I just wrote? I am sure its a liability issue to just have kids running around the island unsupervised (if they wanted to run without mom and dad) A lot of local 5k's in my area have age limits on the 5k, and there is a one mile fun run for the kids, so it does seem pretty standard. Congrats to your daughter on doing GOTR!

So excited they have added bibs and medals(even if plastic)...I was debating bothering to get up and do this but now I definitely will be running it on the MAy 13th 4 night sailing!
