I really need some advice, and I'm hoping that by asking here some of you who have stayed at the same resort can help me out.

This is our first trip to Disney as a family. (I was four years old the last time I was there).

I need some ideas on the convenienve of dining reservations with regard to location from POR. We are a family who likes to take things slow, so I imagine we will be the type of people who go the park early in the morning and head back to the resort by mid-afternoon for a break and then go back to the park after dinner.

Is it a big time waster to travel to other resorts for dinner reservations, then head back to the park? We really want to eat at Ohana and Whispering Canyon. Or should we try to eat at Downtown Disney or the resort every night? OR is it best to just head back to the park for a dinner there?

I would appreciate any advice. This is so new to us, and I'm supposed to make reservations next week. :confused3

Ohana nd Whispering Canyon are two easier ones to travel too! My advice the day you plan to Whisper Canyon is go to Magic Kingdom since they have the boat right there to it! Ohana I would do on a day you are doing epcot or Magic Kingdom. Both of those places are really good and not not waste of travel time if you ask me!

I agree with browneyedgirl. It's worth it to travel to other resorts too to help plan for future trips! ;) And, so many resorts are close to the parks - you've got great restaurant options close to MK, Epcot and AK. It makes for a nice break from the parks too - especially when it's hot and crowded. It gives you a bit of a recharge to go back and keep touring! Good luck and have fun planning!!

Not sure on age of kids but I love Whispering canyon and it's not super hard to get to MK being closest park. Ohana love brfst never done dinner show but fairly easy to get to from a park or dtd. If you have boys who are dino nuts T rex in Dtd is a great place to vist for dinner ( owned by rainforest so can use GC from RFC for Trex). for in park rest. I like tusker house ( only did dinner once was good) Brfst is yummy with donald a crew. I personally like Tony's in MK, Plaza in MK. If your crew is into sea food I hear Cape May is pretty good for dinner located at beach club. I also found trails End at Fort wilderness to be a nice lil place to eat but not easiest place to get to if coming from resort.
I liked boat wrights when i've eaten there. I can't really think of anywhere else to suggest.

Ohana & Whispering Canyon are both pretty easy to get to (especially if you are planning to be at MK in the evening. I would say those two are just as easy as getting to DTD unless you are going to HS in the evening. The POR location is pretty good for all of the parks including DTD. Personally, I love visiting other resorts for different meals. I think the food court at POR is about the best one (as long as you miss the breakfast rush 8-10am). It really depends on your priorities and length of stay. If you aren't trying to see EVERY SINGLE thing in the parks or you are there for at least a week, allow time to leave the parks and eat at other locations! It is more relaxing to get away from the crowds for some meals.

Thank you all for the replies. Our girls will be 11 and 7 on our trip. We are spending 7 days at Disney. We don't have expectations that we will see everything on our first trip, so I think allowing a little extra down time will work for our family. I'm glad to hear the positive reviews of Ohana and Whispering Canyon, because they look sound really good to me. Thanks again!

Good grief, I don't log in for 12 hours and there's another four pages appeared in this thread!!!

Have any of the perferred location rooms been refurbished? Do they have queen size beds or still double? TIA!

Yes, building 14 is done, and all of the refurbished rooms do have queen beds. That's what it says in the FAQ on the first page anyway... ;)

Do you know if they offer cribs as suppose to Pack 'n Play Playard.

The Pack'n'Plays are provided as infant cribs, there isn't anything else available as far as I know.

River - water could be a quiet pool or fountain.

Water View now ONLY gives you swimming pool views, no fountains/puddles/etc. Of course there's always the chance of an upgrade to river view too...

Ok is there much of a difference between garden and water river view distance wise. Is it just the view or is there a real advantage booking the river view.

At POR, all of the River View rooms face "inwards" towards Ol' Man Island (see map in the first post) so the walks to the main pool and the main buildings tend to be some of the shortest ones at the resort.

any thoughts on online check in verses checking in at the desk?

There is maintenance work planned to start in the lobby immediately after Easter for about six weeks, which will reduce the amount of checkin space available. They have plans to use part of the River Roost Lounge area in the meantime, but I suspect it may get quite congested. It has been suggested to me that online check-in should help a lot in reducing the possible queuing time - and anyway, if you don't get given the location you want (check on the map when you get your keycard) you can always ask to be changed, you're not locked in to what they give you.

Do you think this is doable?- Check out of DTD resort early morning, head to POR and store luggage (around 7 am) and hit rope drop at HS? Also, IIRC POR is really close to DTD, right?

It's doable yes. If you're at POR by 7am it only takes a few minutes to drop your bags and you could even do checkin if there's no line. Then either drive or get the bus to HS around 8am and you'll be at the studio gates before 8.30am. Or alternatively you could have a vacation. :)

If you want RV in AB then you need to book preferred.

River View rooms (and Water View) are not included within the Preferred Location booking category. All rooms with views over the river are classed as River View category no matter where they are located (the only exception being river view rooms with King Beds, which are classed under the King Bed category). Preferred Location bookings include the standard and garden view rooms only.

I also disagree with the comment about not doing the deluxe dining.

I think it depends on how you plan to tour. Many people don't want to take the time for one or two table service meals every single day. We, for example, tend to book table service meals every other day, and eat ad hoc as we go around the rest of the time (mostly counter service, or sometimes offsite during shopping trips).

Of course if you do get the Deluxe Plan, plans can be altered to spend more time at restaurants than you otherwise would, but it just doesn't really suit us - and most certainly it would work out more expensive than our normal vacation experience.

I'm glad to hear the positive reviews of Ohana and Whispering Canyon, because they look sound really good to me. Thanks again!

I'm not so keen on Ohana (characters are fun, but the food choice seemed rather limited last time we tried) but Whispering Canyon is great and gives you some nice options plus lots of fun with it. At the Poly, I far prefer the food at Kona Cafe over Ohana - and then go and sit by the water to watch the Electrical Water Pageant and the fireworks afterwards. Bliss.

So I'd better get a new thread set up, we're going to hit the 250 page mark today (after exactly three months, sheesh!).

Could someone do me a favour and have a quick scan over the current FAQ post in the first message here (and maybe even the POFQ one too?) just to make sure I haven't missed updating anything? It should all be correct, but it's easy to miss odd bits of wording when things at the resort change as much as they have recently.

So what views would have fountain views? Basically, I just want to make sure the river view I booked is indeed river view. If not, I'll save that money something else.

Garden View would cover courtyards (including fountains), gardens, lawns, bayou, etc.

River View gives you... well, a river view...

You might even get both in fact, since the Royal Guest Rooms in Oak Manor or Parterre Place have a nice fountain on the lawn area in front of the river, so a central-block River View room in Oak Manor would look out over the fountain first and then the river. Can't think of any regular rooms which would give that option though.

Can someone that has stayed in a Royal Room help me out a bit? We are booked at CBR for FD in a standard room. But I'm thinking of taking the plunge for a royal room. There is only a garden view and higher left. So we are talking another 400.00. I'm pretty sure my girls would be over the moon for the room.

I also feel for the 400.00 we are getting a few more things. Nighly entertainment, boat to DTD and most important queen beds. Also the pool looks to be a better set up then the one at CBR. This is also a concern since we have 3 pool/DTD days scheduled in there.

How long is the walk from the RR to the main area? If we book a garden view is there a chance we could still be facing the parking lost. We stayed at POR years ago but we stayed in the Alligator section. Also does the bus stop at every depot? I don't care if the bus is crowded by the time it gets there. Just want to make sure we don't have to wait for 2 or 3 Mk buses.

Thanks

We're almost there (to 250), maybe the next thread will last a little longer, as long as POR doesn't decide to do more renos and change something else.:lmao:

Again, I as well as others appreciate all that you do Andre on these threads, :worship:

even though I've been to POR (back when it was Dixie Landings), it's good to be able to see what's changed and what's possibly stayed the same since we went in '95.

I did glance at the FAQ's and to me they look great (but those that have been to POR recently might see something I missed).:surfweb:

I know I've seen a map showing where individual rooms are located within the buildings (looking for Oak Manor). Can you point it out to me again! Leaving in 16 days - RGR! Thanks.

Or alternatively you could have a vacation. :) Andre

HaHa Andre! We will be having a vacation. I didn't budget much time for HS during our stay, so we are going to hit the ground running there to get as much done that morning. I planned the Disney Junior character lunch at H+V, then we'll go back to POR when our room is ready, relax, swim, and we're having dinner at Boatwright's. We're going to go see Yeeha Bob after dinner.

We're staying in July-Aug in an AB room for 5, and I just called to add a night to our stay...the CM gave me a discount and an upgrade to a Garden View, so it is worth checking if you call! Don't know the percentage off but we got the extra night and our total was about 100 less than our original total :woohoo:
Our dates are July 30-August 5 :goodvibes

Andre

I just spoke to a CM at POR to put a request in for building 14 and she said it was not refurbished yet. She said it was scheduled for next month. :confused3

Last page!!!
I wasn't around for the first page, last page is the next best thing.
For those staying in Sept.,
