Toll question

A friend of mine warned me about tolls being automatically applied to some of the car rental company cars due to arrangements being made between the two companies and that there may not be an option to pay cash for some of the tolls...is this true?

I don't want to opt in for any additional charges if I can help it and would like to pay cash for tolls.

Please let me know what the skinny is on this...Thanks!

The last time we went there was the option of either. They charge I think somewhere around $1-$2/day for using it. So the trip from the airport and to the airport counts as 2 days. There was no charge if you did not use it. OR you just go through the cash lanes and pay. Hope that helps explain it.

some one with 2000 posts should be familiar with search and reading back

this has been a very popular question for the last year

short answer: for cash keep right

Wow. Glad I don't have my 2000 posts quite yet, cause I wouldn't be able to ask any transportation questions. My experience has been that the search engine can be sketchy at times. ALSO I go on and off the boards depending on when planning a trip; I recently returned to the boards and only just learned about the toll situations down there.

You can pay cash for tolls in the middle and upper part of the state (I was surprised to learn that the bottom part of the state does NOT accept any cash - down by Miami). There is a car rental employee, Gmeh1 (I believe) who works for alamo / enterprise / national, and they said that their companies offer what you're talking about - for $2 per day of use plus the cost of tolls you can go through the pass lane. Other rental companies offer box rentals for the pass at different charges, but I believe they're all optional.

I cannot speak for other rental companies, but, you are spot on with my company. For a pretty comprehensive list of who charges what, this site offers it. https://www.sunpass.com/rentalcar

Hertz did that to us last year. However they didn't tell DH about it and sure enough when we got home there was a charge from Plate Pass. I went on the website and downloaded the "activity". Funny thing was it showed us going through a Tampa toll during the same half hour we got something to eat in the MK. When DH called Plate Pass and told them we had proof that we weren't anywhere near Tampa, they refused to reverse the charge. So we went to our bank, cancelled the card and filed a Regulation D form and gave a copy of the receipt from MK...basically filed a fraud claim. Within three weeks, the charge was reversed.

We will NEVER use Hertz again because they flat out refused to help insisting we went through the Tampa area toll.

Wow.....that certainly isn't the spirit of the Transportation Board!! I mean, I know we don't go around spewing pixiedust all over the place, but geez..people can still ask questions. If it annoys you, then just don't look at the thread!!!
I find that the search function doesn't always work for me. So, I seldom bother with it.

To the OP...don't worry about it. Between MCO and WDW you aren't going to run into any 'no cash' tolls. Even coming in from Sanford is no issue. It's only when you get further south, closer to Miami, that it becomes an issue.
You can still go to cash only toll booths.
A lot of car rental companies seem to be trying to convince renters that they need the service, through their company, that allows them to access cashfree toll booths. And it usually is at a profit for the car rental company!!!
So, no, don't worry about it. It just isn't an issue in the WDW area.

Thanks all! I really appreciate the information and the spirit in which it is shared...I love the DIS just for this reason. :goodvibes

We live in Canada and make many trips to NY state each, since we live so close to the border. Our trips to Florida, though, are only once or twice a year and we've rented a car just once in the last five or so years. I'm a fine detail planner so that we can concentrate on just enjoying ourselves without a hiccup while there. I now know to have cash in hand for tolls and to use it appropriately!!! :thumbsup2

We will be driving from Orlando to Vero Beach. Are there any tolls that we will have to go through that won't take cash?

What happens if we don't have one of the car rental machine things? Do they just send us a bill for the tolls based on the license plate?

the question has been answered at length many times

the question has been answered shortly and incorrectly many more times . . . .

as I state in the thread I referenced, the SUNPASS site has a ton of information

true - few want to read that EITHER

but the golden nugget to find in there is that CHARGES vary WIDELY depending on the rental company

and curiously, others have found that thread just today . . .
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2900415

I've answered this question several times (in the last two weeks) ... spent a good bit of time researching the question to provide a factual answer

If someone wants me to stop spending my (retired) time finding answers that's OK. Or the price of my work is my getting frustrated by the same question every 3 days . .

advanced search .... Sunpass .... many many pages

Captn BJ...thanks for your efforts and sorry to rip your bandaid off, dude! Take a few days off, but not more than three 'cause we need you! :-) I have read the linked thread, so sleep easy tonight, my friend.

If you read the information that has been posted by many sources, you would find the information for your particular rental company. As to going to Vero, yes, you will have tolls, but they take cash.

Captain BJ, I, for one, totally understand your frustration and not only with this particular topic. I have started to just post links and let the OP read the informaiton.

You know...I've been answering the same questions for many, many years. And I'm still here, answering those same questions!!! Am I annoyed? Nope. That's what the DIS is for. If a question only got to be asked one time, there would be no need for these boards. Just figure out all the questions, put 'em in a sticky thread and be done with it. Just lock it up and let people read...kind of like a guidebook. But...this is a discussion board.
People are always welcome to ask any questions they want. If anyone is tired of answering the same old question, then ignore the thread and head off to read something that interests you.

But, it really serves no purpose to come along and chastise others because you are tired of answering the same thing, over and over. That is not the tone I would like to see here. Granted, none of that messy pixiedust being spewed all over the place here, but helpfullnes and patience is appreciated.

Helpufllness and patience is definitely a good thing, and of course anyone can ask anything they want, but, you can also get frustrated.

Absolutely. No argument there. BUT...when someone posts a question, and others come along saying that they've already answered the question, over and over, and saying how annoying it is, or how frustrated they are having to keep answering the same question....well, can you imagine how that makes the OP feel???
I could give you many instances where I've been incredibly frustrated or annoyed....do this for as many years as I have and you would understand. BUT....the vast majority of posters have good intentions and they don't understand that some questions get asked, over and over. I mean, dear God.....I have a sticky here that goes into fine detail about not sending luggage with DME while going off in a towncar or rental car. But still, posters come along and ask about it.
So, if there are those out there that ask a question that has already been answered, then so be it. It's just not worth making someone feel badly. Either answer the question or just pass it by...and someone else will answer it.
We have some of the best posters here on Transportation. For the most part they are very helpful and good natured. And I'm sure that sometimes they get frustrated. But they do manage to keep that frustration in check and go on to give helpful info to those less well informed out there.

something that at least one person does, a person who is incredibly helpful on the theme park board, is to write down the comprehensive and simple reply, and then when they come across a question that it applies to, they just copy and paste!

Simple, easy, correct reply, in almost no time at all, and without being irritated at having to write it all out from scratch again. :)

The tolls around Orlando are so beautifully and nicely marked that unless you have 5 screaming children and no other adult in the car, I can't see how you would miss them. They are marked ahead of time and as you approach.

I completely understand what you are saying and I have been doing this for longer than you, as a matter of fact. ;) I do just pass by questions that have been answered over and over and often on the same page. I have no intentions of making anyone feel badly, I sure would not want it done to me.
My level of frustration is at an all time high right now, not from this board, but from people who enter the garage and you ask if you can help them and they say they are here to pick up their car. Well, no kidding, I did not think you were here for a Happy Meal. Or, they don't know what size car they have rented, how can you not know that? Tell people that the car size they have rented in on the next row on the right, and they go to the left. Explain 4x's about the procedure for renting a car and they come back 2x more with the same questions. Some of the most incredibly rude renters are the Emerald Club Exec. elite. Most have never read the "rules" and expect a free upgrade to anything if it is not on the aisle. I love it, sure, we will give you a Luxury for the price of a midsize......in your dreams. What is on the aisle, either side, is what is available at that time. If you need a mini van, rent one, don't expect that the EA or EE is going to have one. It does not happen all that often.
Sorry for the rant, but, I just wanted to let you know where the frustration of late is coming from.

I completely agree with you, but, people simply don't look at signs or follow simple directions. I am going to start writing responses in word and copy and paste from there when a question is asked more than once.

I am not going to get into a contest about who has been here, on the boards, handing out advice, longer. It's useless.
BUT....I have worked in 'retail' also. Have done so for at least 45 years, off and on. And I understand the behaviour of JohnQ public. And you know what??? What seems incredibly simple to you, may be mind boggling to the first time renter, who is worried about messing something up, or who is stressed to the limit after a 6 hr flight with screaming children. Yes, people ask the same question over and over...and yes, sometimes they misunderstand what you have said. And yes, I can understand being frustrated, but in all reality??? It's customer service, you're working with basically an uninformed public. You need to take a patience pill and paste that smile on your face. It's no different than a guest at WDW asking a CM what time the 3:00 parade starts...and yes, they do that. Or the guest who asks how to get to the Castle, when they're standing right in front of it!!! That's just part of the job.
