I just did a search on map quest and it looks like tolls are avoidable from MCO to Disney World and doing so only adds 8 minutes to the drive.

Now my question is is this correct and is it worth avoiding the tolls? If it's not worth avoiding them how much will we need to have (each way) and will it need to be exact change?

Thanks for any help...we've never rented a car from MCO before this will be our first non Magical Express Disney trip!

I would take the 417 route and pay the tolls. Just take a change purse with some $1 and quarters and you will be fine. I usually take $10 in one and $4.00 in quarters to cover the tolls.
There is not a lot of traffic on the this route compared to the other routes.

When leaving the airport take the Boggy Creek south road or it might be call S. Access Rd merge on to 417. take 417 to exit 3 which will be W. Osceola Dr. Takes 35 minutes to get to Disney via this route. If you need to make a grocery store stop get off at S. Orange Blossom Rd. There is a Super Target right off the highway. YOu should be able to see if from the highway off to the left. But when you get off of 417 and onto the exit ramp for Orange Blossom turn right and it should be at the 2nd traffic light and you will see Target on the right.

The tolls via 417 are $2.50 each way (2@$1.25)
Via 528/I4 they are $1.75 each way (1@$1.00 & 1@ $.75)
Both routes are almost the same distance, but you could experience traffic on the 528/I4 route depending on time of day, 417 rarely has heavy traffic.

I would say take the southern route via 417. It was very smooth and it was less traffic than I remember on other routes. I think it's worth $5 roundtrip to avoid the traffic that can build up on the other routes.

The non toll route looks like it only adds 8 minutes, but, that absolutely does not take into account the amazing number of traffic lights and local traffic you will encounter this way.

"Adding only 8 minutes" and "amazing number of traffic lights" make for an oxymoron.

You can use most of 528 and I-4 with just one dollar of toll and just a few traffic lights.

If you get off 417 at exit 6 - there are only two tolls. If the OP gets off at exit 3, there's an unmanned toll booth there that I think is 50 cents.

It's 75 cents if my notes (yes, I keep notes on the drive since I'm the navigator) are correct.

Good to know. It was 25 cents when I got off there in 2003, and I had absolutely NO COINS. I was imagining getting a $100 ticket because of a lack of a quarter! It was 50 cents the last time I accidentally got off there in Dec. 2009. (I was talking to my passenger and missed exit 6!)
