Flying with Children for First Time

In October, my partner and I will take our two nephews, ages 6 and 8, to WDW. Their parents will not be accompanying us, so it will just be the four of us. This will be the first time that we have traveled with children.

Will the kids need any identification to pass through security? Do we need to present special documentation to the airline or TSA since we are not their parents? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Go to TSA.gov and read the section on traveling with children. This will answer all of your questions.

For domestic flights, no id is needed for under age 18 and you don't need any documentation explaining why you are flying with children who are not your own.

What they said!!!

I've taken my nephew numerous times and have never taken nor needed anything anywhere.

It might be a good idea to get a notorised letter from the parents giving you permission to travel with their kids and permission to obtain medical care for them. You can find lots of free templates online, personalise it and take it to your notary (my credit union has one and its a free service)

We have done this several times in the past with our kids friends. Make sure you get a notorized letter stating that you have permission to have your nephews traveling with you and that you also have permission to make any medical decisions if necessary. Also take along a copy of their medical insurance cards in case you ever needed medical attention for them.

I think there is an echo in here ;)

There is NO need to waste time or money getting a notarized or any other type of note to take minors who are not your children on a domestic flight. I don't understand why so many people advise this.

As for medical issues, yes, it's a good idea to have insurance cards, but it is so easy to get in touch with parents (cell phones, email), I'm not even sure that you need a note for medical permission either. I'm sure if this is an issue, someone will correct this.

I had already thought about the emergency medical care issue. My partner is a judge, so he can draw up any documents and get them notarized.

Thanks again everyone for your help. We are excited to be taking our nephews on their first Disney trip and first plane ride. This will be an adventure for all of us.

You will have a wonderful time! I have taken my nieces and nephews many places and my 1 nephew to Disney several times. The time he was 6 he had to miss 2 days of school so we told him he had to learn a new vocabulary word each day he missed school, At Epcot he learned topiary and at MK he learned idle banter (from jungle cruise) the point of this ramble is this nephew is now 30 and if you ask him what his vocabulary words from his Disney trip were he can still tell you! we remember each of his trips fondly.

I also agree with lost you really don't need anything notarized. The insurance cards are much more important! that can be a hassle if you don't have them. The permission is no big deal with all the electronic communication and cell phones, but without an insurance card forget it.
