OT: Cashier Error in our favor....

My DH picked up a 6 pack of Guinness at the Liquor Store last Saturday, St. Patricks Day. Cashier said the total was $9.80. She swiped my DH's card and asked if he wanted a receipt. He said no. (We don't usually get receipts for small purchases.)

So yesterday I checked our bank account, and the Liquor Store only charged us .98 cents for a six pack of beer! It seems she typed the decimal point into the wrong spot, or left out a zero.

I'm just glad it didn't go the other way, where we would have paid $98 or $980 for beer!

In the future we will be asking for receipts now. Never know when something like this will happen!

Had my husband known about it when he was there, he would have said something. We just don't feel like going out of our way to go back and have them correct their error. Live and learn! :upsidedow

You really should go back and have that error fixed. That error might just cause that poor girl her job. Do you really want to be responsible for that?

I wouldn't worry about it. Chances are they beer was scanned into the register and it was simply programmed in wrong. Either way, if you go back to fix the error it will probably cause confusion for everyone involved.

I try to live by the Golden Rule, which I think applies here... if someone balancing the accounts at the store noticed an error that went against me, as a customer, I would hope that they would resolve the error. Therefore, I'd want to do the same for them, and bring it to their attention.

I had one go the other way once... instead of 18.79 for the pho soup we had, he charged my visa $187.90! Fortunately I was paying attention, but then HE didn't know how to charge it back to my card. Called his boss who tried to explain to him over the phone, then said he'd drive in and for me to wait... then he called back and just told the guy to give me cash. Ugh - I can't bring myself to go back, even though it's the only pho joint in town!

I'm with you, as well as the following poster who also lives by the Golden Rule. The error may not cost the girl her job, but she may be docked that amount from her pay.

Maybe it was a one-day St. Patrick's Day special, but maybe the price was incorrectly programmed into the register, and the store is losing money on every sale. If it was your business, wouldn't you hope some good person would bring it to your attention?

Telephone the business and let them know. It's the right thing to do.

I'm kinda with the OP on this one. If i noticed it on-site (cash or charge), definitely let them know.... but to have to drive back to the store for $9? How much is your gas and time going to cost? I don't think I would. If it was a considerable amount... probably then it would make more sense.

I probably wouldn't go down, but karma might require me to give them a call. I worked at a liquor store once and got grifted by these two old ladies who had three sets of large bottle spirits on the counter. I rang the first set as requested. After they paid for that I rang the second set to the tune of $70, they said they'd already paid for the second set. I was 18 - confused, and my manager just said to move on to the third set and we'd square the books at close. Well, when we were $70 short at the end of the day would you believe the manager took it out of my pay?

While I agree it would be a good thing to do to at least call, the OP is *NOT* responsible for anyone losing their job on this one. The person responsible is whoever entered the incorrect price.

The cashier's mistake *could* cost her the job. Would she be fired over $9 bucks? Doubt it.

I should have known a topic like this would cause a stir! Auugh...forum boards! That's why 90% of the time I'm a lurker...

I can sleep easy at night....it wasn't our fault. If the Liquor Store wants to charge our bank account for the difference, then they need to do the leg work. And we wouldn't have a problem with it.

We had a great time drinking our .98 cent beer! :drinking1

I would not make a special trip back to the store for any amount; it can wait until I go there next time.

If it is a considerable amount then the manager can drive to where I am to resolve it.

You would need a receipt to show that they overcharged you if it went that other way.

I always get a receipt. I have seen errors every once in awhile and generally approach the subject by asking a question such as, "how much was the <name an item> again" and the cashier almost always finds the errror at that moment.

Yes. It can cost her her job. Most cashiers are given a leeway of plus or minus $2. After that you can and will be fired. It is thought to be theft.

:thumbsup2 Have fun drinking your .98 cent beer! $9 totally not worth it, IMO, I wouldn't do it either. What are you supposed to do, print up your bank transactions and bring them in, you don't even have a receipt!?!
If the poor cashier is caught, she'll be more careful next time, I doubt is going to be life-altering...

I would call. Chances are they will tell you, thank you for letting us know but it was our mistake and we really appreciate your honesty so thank you but don't worry about it.

I would not like to have the knowledge on my conscious that I knew I was undercharged and did nothing about it. I don't need $9 that badly.

If they overcharged you by $9 would you want them to call you?

The cashier will probably not lose her job over this, it was probably programmed into the computer wrong so it rang up wrong. OP I wouldn't make a special trip back but I would probably mention it the next time I went in........

On the flip side- the store probably didn't know something was undercharged, if OP goes back now they may be getting the cashier in trouble! This is a tough one!

Well I know I'll be asking for receipts from now on. I never even thought of how many errors there could be on my card.

Although, at the cupcake place today, I paid cash, so I know that was right, even though I didn't get the receipt.

I think it really depends on company policy, so saying "most" cashiers isn't really accurate.

OP, I wouldn't go back either but I'd call them to let them know.

My boyfriend was charged $65 at Wendy's instead of $6.50! Luckily he caught it as the cashier didn't, than he had to be given the difference in cash because they couldn't reverse it out. Mistakes do happen!

As for the cashier getting in trouble it will depend on the store's policy. My mom worked at WalMart and had to be within a couple dollars difference or they would get in trouble. They were strict on everything, including accepting expired coupons!
