Anyone have any speculation on which airline this is going to be?

MINNEAPOLIS - If competition is a good thing, then life is about to get better for those who fly out of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP).

The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) announced Monday that a new airline will soon be scheduling flights in and out of the Twin Cities.

While not disclosing the name of the carrier, the MAC said it is an established airline that flies internationally but will serve only domestic routes from MSP at this time.

Negotiations to land a deal with the carrier have been years in the making, according to MAC spokesman Patrick Hogan. "It's part of our overall effort to bring in more competition," Hogan said.

He said the new carrier will fly daily from MSP out of the Humphrey Terminal.

The name of the airline and other details will be announced on Wednesday.

There aren't too many potential candidates. Most likely Spirit, possibly JetBlue, outside chance Virgin America.

Virgin America was my thought, but don't they basically fly coast to coast? Do JetBlue and Spirit fly internationally?

JetBlue & Spirit do fly internationally. Caribbean, South & Central America.

My first thought was Virgin America as well. They do generally go coast to coast, but I know VA flys from BOS-LAS via a stop in California

I suppose I could see VA flying BOS-MSP-LAX or something like that.... we'll see on Wednesday...

I, personally, am hoping for Jet Blue. And I am SO excited for there to be another option here!

KARE 11 did a story from the airport last night and their speculation was that it was going to be JetBlue or Spirit.

I hope it does something for competition. SW didn't really do much to lower prices.

No kidding about needing some competition! Hopefully this will bring prices down a bit... I can't believe how high they are!

I know the days of getting super cheap rates are hard to come by (just 2 years ago I flew out of Duluth to Sanford on Allegiant for $80 rt) but I've been surprised where the fares are sitting at. I've been getting my daily email from Kayak that shows the best fares found for each month between now and January 2013 and it's been over $300 for MSP to MCO being the "deals"?!?! YIKES, it was a bit of a shock as we start planning our trip for next winter (which is sitting at the $400 mark).

They are saying that is will be spirit! but they charge $30 for a carry on and checked luggage can't weigh more than 40 pounds!

Spirit airlines blah...

I have the same feeling... Looks like people really have to do their homework to see if the tickets are worth it after adding up all of the add on fees.

Not worth it for us. Vegas...maybe. Orlando...definitely not!

Especially if you fly the non-stop flight from MSP to LAS. That flight doesn't have the fuel surcharge. I looked and could get round trip for $180 before any extra add on fees. I will have to see if they are worth it on my next trip to LAS.
