Sunpass Questions

Hi Folks:

We took the Sunpass plunge and just ordered the portable transponder. I have two questions.

1. Is it imperative that it be mounted on the window or can we hold it up to the window?

2. Do I have to get off the side ramp toll area and through the Sunpass booth or can I stay on the main portion of the highway and keep driving?

Thanks

Tim/Hawk

Love our sunpass transponder! We just put ours up on the dash and it has always worked for us. It beeps so you know that it's been recorded.
The other great thing is that you just keep driving on the highway, people that are paying the tolls are the ones that pull over to the side. :) Love that!

My Sunpass has suction cups so I mount it on the windshield and keep there until we arrive back at the airport. You (a passenger) can hold it, just make sure it is below the AS1 line of the windshield. The general rule with transponders is that you mount it so you can't see it as it will be hidden by the rear view window.

You will not have to go on the side ramps to pay the toll. Just follow the signs for Sunpass / E-Pass.

It will work if you hold it up on the windshield. But if your hand slips as you go under the sensor arch then it might misregister and you will get a violation notice with a hefty surcharge or fine added.

I love my Sunpass!

Do yourself a favor now and write your account number and the customer service number right on the unit or put it in your phone or something. That way if you need assistance (like if it doesn't beep when you go through a toll booth), you have the info handy.

The newer ones don't beep anymore. https://www.sunpass.com/selectAcceptAgreementPurchaseTransponder.action

Also, mine registers even if it is in my glove compartment. They will supply a shielded bag for free.

You will also need to call them with the plate number for the rental car. It won't beep, the new ones don't have that handy feature, however, the new ones don't need batteries. https://www.sunpass.com/selectAcceptAgreementPurchaseTransponder.action

I've called sometimes, not called others, and called only to be told I didn't need to call. :confused3 Mostly I just update the plate number on the website from my iPhone.

I go on-line when we get to our hotel and add our car info at the SunPass site (when I remember), it's never been an issue but I suppose it could if something wasn't up to date ...such as the credit card you use for automatic payment.

The Sunpass website has a feature that allows you to register a rental car. You can enter your start and end dates of the rental up to 48 hours after you go through your first toll. If for some reason those tolls didn't register, registering it online within 48 hours will prevent a violation.

That's a great idea, however, not everyone has an I phone or carries a computer with them, hence the idea to keep the phone number to call to avoid a possible fine.
