I need to buy an underwater camera for our upcoming cruise and would love input with regards to which one would be a good purchase. My DD is hoping to get some pics of the underwater Mickey at Castaway. I'm hoping to keep the cost down around $300. Any suggestions?

We usually just buy the Fuji waterproof camera at WalMart.

We also have a Kodak Playsport and LOVE it!! Some friends took it on their beach vacation last summer and got some amazing underwater shots.

I just emailed my husband and my parents the link for the Kodak Play Sport! Maybe they can get it for my birthday in time for our cruise.

Best ones at the moment are

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3
Sony TX10
and the new Nikon AW100

I have a Canon D10 and love it! Video and photos are good in and out of the water. I normally use a Canon, so I found it easy to use.

It really depends on what you'll use it for. If all you want is a couple shots of Mickey in the CC snorkeling lagoon, then save your cash and just get a disposable - it'll be adequate.

If you like snorkeling, beach days, waterparks, etc., then I'm going to throw my weight onto the Kodak play/sport. My dad bought one for me last year, and I was impressed with how good it was for the price point. Photography is a hobby of mine, but DH isn't too great with it, lol...but both of us managed to get some great shots. It's easy to use, even one-handed! Also, the greatest thing about it to me was that it takes video and then allows you to pull out still photos from that video and save them as a separate file, right on the camera. I have some BEAUTIFUL shots of the characters that I pulled out of videos of them dancing at the NYE party, for example. It works great for snorkeling, swimming, and general use - but it's only waterproof up to 3m deep.

If you're into deep water activities, like scuba diving and such, then you'd be doing yourself a great favor by going with a camera designed specifically for underwater usage - like a Sea Life camera or similar. It doesn't sound like that's your intent, though. So you really don't need to toss a bunch of money in that direction.

:cool1: Thank you all so much for your suggestions! I really appreciate it a ton. :thumbsup2 I've been stressing a bit over this decision and it helps tremendously hearing from people who have used the cameras themselves :)

I have the Pentax Optio W60 and it's great! I've gotten wonderful pictures in all sorts of circumstances - it even has a 1cm macro that takes great pictures! There's an upgraded version of it that comes in colors.

We also have a D10, and it takes almost as good of pictures and video as my really expensive camera. I leave the expensive camera behind and just take the D10 to the beach, waterparks etc.

I bought a Polaroid Dive-Rated waterproof camera housing off of amazon.com for $20 and used it with my Cannon PowerShot digital camera. I took some underwater pictures with it in the snorkeling lagoon at Castaway Cay, they look pretty good. The biggest issue I had was seeing the LCD screen on the camera underwater with snorkeling equipment on, even with the LCD screen brightness turned all the way up it was hard to see. Next time I'm going to try to rig up a small chem light or something on it so I can see the screen better, its not worth the money for me to spend $300 or so for an underwater camera based on the relatively few underwater photos I take.

I also love our Canon D10. It takes amazing pictures! It's been very worth it's price.
