We are booked on the Wonder repositioning cruise in May. I am trying to plan our day in San Francisco to do as much as possible. I cannot find info anywhere on the DCL website about where the ship will be docked in SF. Anyone know? I was hoping to make the first ferry of the day to Alcatraz that leaves from Pier 33. Anyone know what distances we are talking about?

The first ferry leaves at 9AM and we are supposed to be docked by 8. Think we can make it.

i can only speak as a former san franciscan (never cruised in or out of there), but i imagine the alcatraz ferry you speak of is the one near fishermans wharf which is like pier 45n0r 47 maybe? i think cruise ships dock at like pier 35. it’s not walking distance, but not a far cab ride and i would *assume* it would be very easy to get a cab from there. so i would think that if you were indeed off the boat you could definitely make it. alcatraz ferries run all day though don’t they?

oh duh... i see you said pier 33 duh. that just the next pier over but it may or may not be easy to walk to/pedestrian accessible. however i’m sure that there will be cabs available if you can’t walk it.

alcatraz is AWESOME!!!

While I do not know where the cruise ships dock, I DO know that Alcatraz tickets are not easy to come by. Tours are sometimes booked months in advance depending on when you want to go. So my suggestion is to grab the Alcatraz tickets as early as you can.

Also, since you are planning to do as much as possible, check out the San Francisco CityPASS (just google the website) since it allows you to get into attractions in an express line. You can compute how much it costs to do the attractions you want individually versus the cost of the PASS, and see where you can get the most value.

Enjoy your visit!

we were on the repo last year (may 2011)....we docked at pier 35...the Alcatraz dock is at 33....very easy walking distance, 10 minute walk at the most and most of it is inside the building to get out...easy walking also to Pier 39 where all the stores are and to Fisherman's Wharf. Ghiradelli is down the street from Fisherman's Wharf but still a nice walk. Check out Google maps.

You might be cutting it too close for a 9am Alcatraz trip. They want you there I thought 30 minutes early. Did you get the tickets on your own? If so, I would contact the tour people and ask. We did Alcatraz the first day but we went about 11am. I don't remember what time we docked but I really think that you are cutting it close....

I know that tickets are on sale now through May 9th....(we are going again in June on the 11th which is the 50th anniversary of the escape and we can't get them yet)...don't know the date you will be in SF....

You are going to want to be on the bridge when you go under the Golden Gate. It is so beautiful. The sun will be coming up right behind the bridge and will make for some beautiful photography!

If you are on the starboard/right side of the ship you will have a wonderful view from your stateroom of Pier 39, the Golden Gate and Alcatraz....
If you have any other questions just ask away...
we liked this cruise so much we are doing it again this October.... :)

We did a 4 day trip to San Fran last May and stayed at the Kimpton Argonaut (loved that hotel...they had steamship teak loungers in the lobby like on Deck 4 of the ships!) which was right across from fishermans wharf (next to cable car turnaround) and we walked to the Alcatraz pier....from there it was a long walk but we passed where the cruise ships docked. I knew the Wonder would be there the following week!!!

Still thinking about doing that cruise this May!!!

Oh...don't forget to visit the Disney Family Museum in San Fran...we didn't get a chance to get there.

If the ship docks at the same place as last year, you will be very close to where you get the ferry to Alcatraz. I would not be worried about not getting the first ferry over at all, you are more likely to get fog that early in the morning and a little later will be much better. Of course last year when the ship was in, the weather couldn't have been nicer.

We live in the city. Drop me a PM with your address and I'll mail you out a map of the wharf area. Also, the HOHO is offerring half price tickets now if you are interested. Here is the link, with a video

You could always do it next May 2013 and join me! Pretty dirt cheap rates, even for a repo

To the OP, but Alcatraz tickets as soon as they go on sale, but I would not get the 9am boat, maybe 10am just to be sure.

Right in front of the cruise ship terminal is an historic street car (NOT cable car, those are elsewhere) line, the F line. Pay the 1.50 or whatever it is now and ride in a cool old Italian car, it will take you down the Embaracdero and up market street, great for sight seeing, and on Market you have access to the BART to take you all over the bay area, and to the best mexican food on the PLANET at the 24th Street BART station.

Unless DCL is docking from an unusual pier, you should be able to make it, and probably pick up coffee on the way. Most cruise ships dock at Pier 35, and next-door piers are always odd or even (so it goes Pier 33, Pier 35, Pier 37, Pier 39, Pier 41).

We just bought the 9AM so I am hoping it's okay. We should dock at Pier 35 and the Alcatraz Cruise leaves from the next one over at Pier 33. I just called and was told we should be fine. I guess our only problem will be if the ship docks late. They are closed now but I will call in the morning to verify if we are late how hard is it to change the time.
