Insurance and Norovirus

My DFIL is joining us on our upcoming cruise and he is very concerned about getting this virus. He purchased the trip insurance and wanted to know if the insurance covered any part of the cruise if you came down with it and had to miss like 2-3 full days being stucks sick in your room.

I don't think it will cover it at all but he has me on a mission to find out.

Any thoughts?

It depends on the policy he purchased. Many will cover on a pro-rated basis for any days that you were quarantined to your stateroom. For instance, if you were quarantined for 3 days of a 7 night cruise, they would reimburse 3/7 of the cruise fare + the medical center visits.

I had this same concern and confirmed with my trip insurer that this situation would be covered under the trip interruption coverage included in my policy. I think this is fairly standard coverage but it never hurts to check.

Our policy with Access America does this and because we have kids, it also covers the cost of one adult for the days that the child is quarantined. DS had pink eye last January and had to stay in the room for one day.

What type of documentation did you get from the medical center to submit to Access America?

I'm asking b/c DD came down w/RSV during our 1st cruise and had to stay in the room for 2 days. The "receipt" or carbon copy of her diagnosis was not clear enough and was insufficient for us to submit to our regular health insurance for reimbursement. We ate the cost, it was only $150 for the visit, but still.

I'd like to hear opinions on what to ask for to submit to travel insurance. We plan on buying through Access America for our next cruise as well.

Thanks.

That's all I submitted to our insurance and they took care of the rest. There was contact information on the receipt so I am guessing they contacted the company if there was a question. We have BCBS and the travel insurance was with Access America.

We had this situation a few years ago when our DS came down with noro that we think he picked up in Ocean Quest. We had a policy from Travelex and submitted a copy of the paperwork they gave us at the medical center when they gave him an injection to stop the vomiting. It clearly stated that he was confined to the stateroom for 48 hours, and since he was a minor, one of us had to be in the room with him at all times. The insurance company reimbursed us for two days of his cruise fare and two days of one adult fare (since one of us had to be in the room). It was a fairly large amount because we were in a one bedroom suite. Definitely worth the cost of the policy.
