We will be on the Disney Dream on March 4-9, 2012 and was looking t going to Atlantis.
1) how much does The Dig(aquarium) cost?
2) is it worth paying for excursion from the boat
3) should we get a room from one of the hotels

Any information would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

If you are talking about the Marine Habitat, I recall that it was close to $40 for adults, slightly less for children. There are parts that are exposed to the common areas in the lobbies and restaurant areas that you don't have to pay for. After going through these, we didn't feel like it was worth another 40 bucks to see more although I suspect that these "free" parts were there to wet your appetite. That said, the resort is beautiful. They have lovely shops and there is an awesome casino if you enjoy gambling.
A friend and I rented a room at an adjoining property which allowed us to use the pools several years ago while on a different (aka not Disney) cruise line and we had a great time. Definitely do not rent a room at Atlantis as there are much cheaper ways to enjoy the resort and the island.

I just booked Atlantis for our upcoming cruise as well. There are several threads on here discussing the benefits to booking a stay at a different hotel (although never staying there) and using Atlantis. At the end of the day, I didn't see the huge savings. To me, time is critical on a vacation, particularly a short cruise like we are taking. The dollar difference wasn't significant enough for us to book through another hotel as opposed to Disney. So I think it depends what you are willing to do. I just didn't want the hassle of having to stop at another hotel and check in, even if it is a short distance. Some will say I'm crazy. But in the end, none of it is cheap, and I want simplicity on my vacation. It is all a personal preference.

Is it possible/easy to not book Atlantis but to simply get a taxi from the port and go for a walk/look around Atlantis?....I take it we would not be allowed in the pool or aqarium areas but what about everywhere else..shops..restaurants?

Iam not sure if we want to pay for discover atlantis or simply just go for a nosey around before getting back on the ship.

We took the Discover Atlantis tour during our Dream cruise in Oct. and found it well worth the money. The cost was $59pp adult, less for 10 and under.

Gathered at the Walt Disney Theater to receive our wristbands and proceeded off the ship as a group to our waiting bus. The driver was very pleasant and took us on a little narrated tour of Nassau on the way to Atlantis.

Once there we took a narrated tour of The Dig which we all found most interesting and informative. The 3 of us really enjoyed it. Afterwards, we were free to roam the grounds as well as the casino, shops and lobby area of Atlantis as part of the tour. Everyone just visiting Atlantis used to be able to roam the grounds at will but that's now restricted.

The bus back to the ship was available every 1/2 hour same place we were left off upon arriving. Very convenient and hassle-free.

Whichever you choose, enjoy your cruise and Nassau visit.
