Dance tights for sensitive skin?

DD(5) has very sensitive skin (gets it from me). She loves dance class, but getting her into the dance tights is a battle almost every week and she often comes out of class in the middle trying to go the bathroom and take them off (they are required for class so that is a big no no). I feel bad because when we get home and get them off of her, her poor little legs are often really red and sometimes rashy, so I know they are really irritating her and it isn't just drama. We've tried a few kinds, but they all seem the same. Does anyone have some recommendations for good dance tights to try for sensitive skin? Thanks!

My 2 girls have been dancing for years. I like Revolution & Capezio. I just bought some tights from dancewearsolutions (online) --the brand is Balera & they are very inexpensive ($5.50). My daughters wore them this week and they seem like a nice material.

I don't know if they will hold up as well as the Capezio (microfiber) ones we've had for many years.

Do you know what exactly is giving her the rash? Is it that the tights are not soft enough or is the the specific material they are made out of?

If it is the softness factor - try Capezio Ultra Soft tights. They are super soft and should be comfortable for her.

I'll second this brand! I would also make sure to wash and do an extra rinse for her tights. If it keeps happening, I am sure the instructor could work with you and your daughter.

DD18 wears Balera ALL the time, and we are talking about 16+ hours a week in the dance studio. She has sensitive skin and swears by these tights. All the Capezio tights have too much elastic/lycra for her to be comfortable in. She also liked Body Wrappers, but their convertible tights tend to ravel around the foot-hole too quickly for her. We have found the Balera tights to be comfortable, durable, and they can go in the washer with no problem.

No clue. I'm embarrassed to say that this isn't her first year in dance, and this has been going on for a few years. I have always assumed the rash was from her sensitivity to whatever product they were using to clean the floor at the studio as they sit on the floor quite a bit and the rash is usually on the backs of her legs. I knew she had always complained about the tights, but I didn't clue in that the rash may very well be related to the tights themselves until last night as we were having a lovely battle in the bathroom in the middle of her dance class about how she couldn't go back to class without her tights back on and she was complaining that they were too itchy and crying. We will definitely try the Capezio Ultra Soft and the Balera. I don't think we have tried either one of those before! Thanks everyone!

I have a skin condition (it is a mole, actually, though it doesn't look like one; it covers most of my right thigh) that prevents me from wearing any kind of tight fabric on my legs, except silk. The problem is not the fabric itself, it is the pressure of it against my skin. It ends up red and scaly, and if the fabric is at all rough, it can sometimes bleed. I can no longer wear tights/hose of any kind for more than an hour or so, or I end up in real pain. I've had this thing all my life, but dry cold weather exacerbates it greatly. One thing that does help me in wintertime is making sure to liberally moisturize my legs; I use pure cocoa butter for this, as it doesn't irritate the skin any further.

If you cannot find tights that work for her, do you think that her teacher would let her wear silk footless tights for practice? It is fairly easy to find silk long underwear tights for kids, but I don't think you would be able to get them in ballet pink; they usually come in ivory or black.

It may be the way you are washing them and not the tights themselves. I have to be VERY careful with washing tights and leos for DD, becuase the combination of them being tight and he sweating in them intensifies her skin allergies. We use free and clear everything in our house and find I cannot hand wash any of her dancethings becuase all of the soap doesn't come out. I have to send them through the washer and double rinse them or she gets itchy and irritated.

Capezio ultra soft is DD's favorite and seems to be the tight of choice at the studio. You will pay more for them ($12 a pair regular price), but they are so worth it!

I don't think so because we already use Tide "free and gentle" because of her (okay our) sensitive skin, and we do send them through the washer. She's never had any trouble with the leos, its just the tights. I'll try to remember to try double rinsing and see if that helps.

Bought a pair of the Capezio ultra soft today at a dance shop in town (they didn't carry Balera or I would have tried one of each). We'll see how that goes next week. If that doesn't help, I will try ordering the Balera. Thanks again!

Same thing happens to my dd who is 6. We go a size up on the tights and that seemed to help. We also only buy the Cappezio Ultra Soft tights and wash in All Free, no dryer sheets.

All those things makes her happy.

As a PP said, I cannot use Tide of any kind, even free and clear. We use All free and clear.

Maybe they feel too tight to her, and buying a size or two bigger will help? We did that with my DD, and it helped.

Based on my daughter's experience, I would guess that the tights are too, tight and irritating her skin. Try buying a size or two bigger than what the charts say for height/weight...that might help (it helped my child). I figured it was bettter to have the wrinkles around the ankles and have her comfortable in the tights than to deal with the irritation of the smaller size. And if you can get footless, the wrinkly ankles become a non-issue (our studio allows footless for class, but not for recital - the kids have almost all switched out to the transitions which they can wear either way)

Tide free makes us itch like crazy. We use All free and clear.

I would second this. My sister reacts terribly to the laundry soap, she kept telling my mom that her clothes made her itch and she thought she was nuts. This continued until my mom realized how much she was itching and scratching herself in her sleep. As soon as we switched to the free-and-clear laundry (we use All) it all cleared up.

I would also recommend possibly going up one size in her tights so they wouldn't be so tight and irritating to her

Thank you guys so much! Used the Capezio Ultra soft today. No tears, no complaints, no fights, no running out of dance class in the middle trying to take them off! No rash of red legs either! She kept saying before and after class how soft they were and how much better they felt!!!! I feel like an idiot for not figuring out sooner that the tights were the problem!
