Anyone use Fox Rent A Car?

Hi, we just started planning a trip to Disneyland for March 17-24 and after reading some great info on this board I have re-thought our plans and am thinking about flying into SAN and out of LAX so that we can visit San Diego for a few days the head over to DL. After searching for a rental car company that will not charge an arm and a leg for dropping the car off at LAX after picking it up at SAN I have found Fox Rent A Car. Per their website I can get a Midsize SUV for $256 with taxes for the week which seems like an awesome deal. I am not sure why but the do not charge a drop off fee for this car class (all other classes have a drop off fee from $40-70).

Has anyone used this company? I googled it and found some unflattering accounts of them not honoring the price on the contract.

TIA!

I am interested in the responses as well! I have been looking at rental options that allow you to rent with a debit card and without a credit check. Fox seems to be the most straight forward answer but I have not found any reviews regarding this option. If anyone could chime in with their experiences I would really appreciate it!

My family used Fox before, although it was a few years ago. Admittedly, I was a little skeptical since I had never even heard of them previously (I'm from Texas, as far as I know we don't have Fox here) and I also read a couple of negative reviews online. However, we had absolutely no problems with Fox whatsoever. They had the best price, to be sure, and while we did have to wait about 20 minutes to get our car, I have also waited that long at other well known companies (Hertz, Alamo). Plus, Fox e-mailed me a week or so in advance to verify my reservation. I asked a couple of questions in my reply, and got answers to each question in the same day.

This was in December of 2007, so who knows what changes could have taken place since then, but we're returning in August 2012 and I will be using Fox again. Hopefully, if you do decide to use Fox, you will return to this thread and let us know how it went. I look forward to your reply.

Thank you for the info. I will be sure to come back here and update if I choose to rent from Fox. :)

Not sure if the dates make a difference, but we have a 1 week Minivan reservation from Alamo for about ~200 (with taxes).

That's a great price. For the week I need it is over $400.

Are you dropping the car off at a different place than where you are picking it up?

Alamo never has a drop-off fee for going to a different place. Try this website to see if they have any discount codes available during the time you're there:

They might not have a distinct 'fee', but my $118 rental goes to $722 if I move it to returning at the airport in Phoenix instead of the Tucson airport. So, I wouldn't say that I wouldn't be charged extra for returning to a different location with Alamo...Of course, I'm sure the amount varies from location to location, and the price could actually be lower if they needed to move vehicles between the locations.

I agree, Alamo may not say they have a drop off fee, but the weekly and daily rates are higher if you switch the returning airport to a different one.

Be sure to check back often as well. I just checked the SAN to LAX rental via Alamo (with the Entertainment $30 off/week discount) for Thurs, Jan 12 - Thurs, Jan 19 and the total was only $146 for a minivan. Alamo often gives deep discounts on close dates.

We've used Fox before and had good luck with them. I'm pretty sure I've read on their site that they don't charge an extra fee for returning the car to a different airport. They just don't have very many car rental sites, so your options are sometimes limited.

We used fox rental car when we flew to san diego in 2008. It was TERRIBLE!!!!!!! They were supposed to give us a 4 door upgraded car because we had stroller carseat and lots of bags. They gave us a compact car! We paid extra for the other one!! We had to wait over an hour for a bigger car, and they made us pay extra AGAIN for it, which we later got refunded, but after tons of complaining. It took the shuttle to fox rent a car over an hour to get to us too :(

I also checked Fox and they charge ~$250 drop-off fee for renting in SFO and returning to LAX. This is for our June 2012 trip so perhaps the rental companies have changed their policies. It seems that everyone is charging a one-way drop-off fee, at least for the locations and dates we need.

So it seems that using Fox may be a crap shoot.

I have also found Midway Car Rental which has decent rates picking up at SAN and dropping off at LAX. They include a $50 drop off fee but is still
under $300 for a week. Any thoughts on this company?

We may have to just stick to the original plan and fly into LAX then drive to San Diego. I bet we can get a car for under $200 but I don't like the idea of spending the time driving to San Diego.
