What hotel do you recommend close to Disneyland and why??

My family and I are planning a trip to Disneyland this July. Plan to stay about 10 nights. We were there about 5 years ago - stayed at the Portofino because we found a great rate ... but the hotel room smelled a little (actually a LOT) moldy . It is my hubby and I and two teenage girls - I am too cheap to spring for 2 rooms ... so roomy would be nice, as well as a fairly close walk. We would love to hear where anyone stays and why or why not! Thanks!

My top suggestions is the Park Vue Inn.

It doesn't have big rooms.
It is right across the stree.
It has a quick breakfast, some snacks and a light dinner social, this could mean big food savings over ten days for 4 people. Though I believe the menu repeats each week for dinner.
It comes with a welcome basket.

If you really need more room you might look for a suite.

You also might want a nicer pool area, I'd suggest the Hojo, though the quiet pool is a bit shady, the play pool area which I doubt interests you is noisy and sunny.

Ramada Maingate has a little nicer pool, but in the middle of the parking lot, and some nicer not big, just nicer Delux rooms.


If you want to stay far away Residence Inn Miangate has studio apartments. Annabella Hotel has nice big rooms.

If you don't mind too far to walk, Homewood Suites, or try priceline for a 4 star in Anehim South which will likely give a convetion hotel, maybe Clarion, Marriot, Embassy Suites.

I like the Candy Cane Inn. Not luxurious but close and has a free breakfast.

If you'd really like a suite though, and you're willing to take a shuttle, the Embassy Suites is great. Your girls can sleep in their own room with their own TV, there is free breakfast, and free happy hour.

I also hear good things about the Ayres hotel. Walkable, free bfast & happy hours, and it looks really cute and boutique-y.

If you heard that about the Ayres, I wouldn't bother looking at that site. It's not true, the Ayres is not walkable, it's a few miles away. It's a great hotel that has great rates, but its value rates are because of it's distance.

Candy Cane Inn is great, however a top complaint about it is the small room size.

We've loved the Raddison Suites near Knotts. Several ways to get rates from $65-$80. Rack rate is $150 and up. Rooms are large with two beds in one room and sleeper sofa in another. Free hot breakfast buffet saves us a bunch. They have a free shuttle to Disneyland or its a fast 10 min drive.

The Residence Inn Maingate. The rooms are large, you can get one bedroom suites and breakfast is included so factor that in with the rate. It is also next to the Garden Walk Mall.

A second vote for Residence Inn Maingate. We just got back from 12 nights there. The staff is fantastic. The rooms are large. I would recommend a 1 bedroom, and ask for an upstairs one. They have 2 queen beds in the bedroom and a sofa sleeper in the family room. They have a full kitchen, and you get a hot breakfast (eggs, breakfast meats, waffles, fruit, potatoes, french toast, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and more!) It really makes sense for us.

Huff - I always appreciate your tip on the Radisson. I didn't know though that it had a shuttle! Excellent!

I do like the Residence Inn, but I don't know that I'd count on the sofa sleeper for a teen - the RI on Harbor sofa beds really only fit younger kids. Malcon - how are those sofabeds at Clementine? I'd think an air mattress would work too.

I would recommend the Anaheim Fairfield~the rooms are not huge, but they have 2 queen beds and a small fold out chair, if one of the girls was short. We've stayed there before with our teens, and since we stayed there they've refurbished it, they have suites now with a separate living room with pull out sofas and tv. It's very close walking distance to the main gate, has a McD's right in front of it, a pizza hut/deli inside with Seattle's Best coffee, etc. Also, Mimi's restaurant is right behind it, and it's delish!

We've also stayed at the Howard Johnson, and they have suites as well. Their suites have either 1 King bed w/a separate room with dbl bed pull out sofa, or 2 queen beds with dbl bed pull out sofa..both suites are 700 sq. feet! Very highly rated on tripadvisor and otherwise. Two pools, waterpark, nice grounds and well stocked gift shop with everything you need, including milk and other food items.

The Embassy Suites south are really nice, but you'd have to take a shuttle or drive yourself. Of course it includes a full service breakfast each morning, and snacks/drinks in the evening. There are other hotels surrounding it, such as Hyatt, Homewood Suites and more.

The Candy Cane Inn is nice, they have a dedicated shuttle and a free complimentary continental breakfast. They are known for their hospitality and beautiful grounds. The rooms are not necessarily roomy, but comfortable.

I really like the Howard Johnson's Anaheim

You can generally get a good rate, if you book in advance, and they often have excellent Entertainment and Annual Passholder rates

The rooms are very spacious, and that is important to me with a mobility scooter in tow

The rooms have refrigerators, and some also have a microwave

They are very close to the parks, and next door to Mimi's restaurant, which I like a lot

The people are friendly and the landscaping is very pretty

The rooms are always very clean

If you have an annual passholder, the gift shop will give you a 10% discount (we always forget something)

The sofa sleepers are a double bed. Generally, my 21yo daughter gets the sofa sleeper, last trip my 23yo son and his 21yo GF shared the sofa sleeper. But generally, when my daughters were teens, they shared a queen bed. If the OP gets the penthouse suite, it has 1 king bed in one room, and 2 queens in another room.

I do not think the RI Mingate is that big of a walk but we have stayed there and love it. Hot breakfast, managers specials, grocery shopping,and some large rooms. Did a reg room with two teenage girls, never again..only one bath killed me. Doing this from a phone so may have hit wrong post.

All for around $80 per night...

We have stayed closer at the Carousel and tropicanna and would only pay the higher rates for being closer if your family is young...

Another vote for RI Maingate. They also have a bi-loft suite, 1 king bed + bathroom 'upstairs' with two queen beds downstairs + bathroom, kitchen and open lounge area below. Well worth the extra money to upgrade to this room as it provides LOTS of space.

Do you know if any of the rooms have a fireworks view at the RI Maingate? We are scheduled to stay there in July and I wasn't sure if they did so I didn't ask for that type of view. We booked a penthouse suite. Thanks. Oh and the reason I'm asking here and not the hotel is I like to get a customer's perspective. )

There aren't any that are labelled 'fireworks view' but we had a room quite close to the road of S.Clementine. At first we thought we'd hear lots of road traffic but it wasn't too bad.

The rooms are in blocks like small houses and there are maybe 4 or 6 'rooms' per block. There were lots of trees around our area so we couldn't see the fireworks from our room BUT if you walk to the corner of S.Clementine and Disney Way we could see them quite well. In saying that, I don't know whether other rooms had a better view of the fireworks (if they were closer to Disney Way corner or further away from the trees).

Thanks for that info. We are fine with no view of them, but wanted to ask just in case. In 2008 we stayed at HOJO and had a view and it was nice to just to watch them from the hotel. The kids are older now so we can probably stay later to watch them in the park.
