Okay, I'm THINKING of maybe getting into scotch. I was given some Balveine 12 yr Double Wood. It was AMAZING. So I'm trying to learn where to go from here.

On a related comment, I had some Octoberfest from Sam Adams, and an Oktoberfest from Schlafly (St. Louis microbrewery). I liked them both, but the Octoberfest was just a little bit better.

If anyone has a "Scotch Palate", I'd love to pick your brain.

I do enjoy a nip of scotch occasionally.

Here are my favorites:

Oban 14 - Its a nice smooth sipper

Macallan - They have a full flight. 10, 12, 15, 18, 25, etc. The price jumps pretty steep, but I like the 15 for a "special occasion".

Ardbeg - Again a good sipper, fairly easy going.

Talisker - A little more peaty and smoky.

Glenlivet - Again a full flight and the taste varies depending on the age and casking.

I'm a big fan of the Balvenie DoubleWood. It's a very good, middle of the road scotch. I'd recommend picking up a couple of scotches at opposite ends of the spectrum to taste. On the Speyside/Highland side, I'd go with either The Macallan 12-year (should be about $50) or Glenlivet 18-year (about $65). And for the peatier Islay side, either a Lagavulin 16-year (about $65) or Laphroaig 10-year (about $35).

Okay, so we have some scotch drinkers. How about bourbon? I ran across Woodford Reserve and have really enjoyed it.

I'm not much for drinking it "neat" or "on the rocks", but I have really liked putting a splash (or more) in with some Tonic Water. How else do you guys like your bourbon? I'm looking for new ways to mix it.

Also, anyone have some other good bourbon recommendations?

Sounds awesome - I want to party with you guys.

I enjoy a nice scotch, but the budget doesn't allow me to experiment to much.

I enjoy Glenfiddich and Glenlivet both 12 year single malt.

I also like Johnnie Walker Black (12 year blended).

I have tried Johnnie Walker Blue - was very earthy and smoky, but I can't see spending $260 on a bottle.

I can't do the Scotch, but do enjoy the bourbons. My personal fav both for drink-ability and price is Makers Mark, but if I'm dreaming it's Pappy Van Winkle. I also enjoy Bookers, WR, Eagles Rare/Buffalo Trace(Same distillery) to name a few. I'm really more of a beer guy though, as I homebrew.

Citrus-y in flavor. Finally, the burn was delayed. It was weird. Good, but odd. And that is only for sale in Colorado at present. Hoping to get McAllen 12 yr for Christmas this year.

I think it all depends on what you like. For me I enjoy both burbon and scotch, but if I had to choose one I'd go scotch. My go to for "cheap" is Lagavullin as posted before. It's got a great finish woth peat and great color as well. I have enjoyed several $200+ bottles that were GREAT, but it's hard to justify drinking them. You basically just have to find your niche of scotches. I don't mind buying anything from the $50-150 range......again you just have to pick a region you like and test those you enjoy. I like the peaty stuff the most *shrug*.

If I had to pick burbon.....my go to is Knob Creek. It's got a nice bold flavor and is still reletavily smooth. My 2nd choice would probably be JD single barrel.

AND....beer. Mmmmm all depends on the mood. I like most, but prefer porters or stouts.

I recently enjoyed a glass of 21-year-old Glenlivet Archive scotch. Soooooo good. With the really good stuff, I like to stretch out it's shelf life. I'll have a few glasses, then stash the bottle away for a while. Break it out for a special occassion, and then stash it away again. It's like an extra cause for celebration when I find that special bottle with ONE MORE glass left in it, hiding in the back of the cabinet.

I'm not much of a scotch drinker, but do enjoy bourbon. Makers Mark is my favorite. I am related to Basil Hayden, so drinking is in my blood. Currently, I have some Hennessey cognac in the cabinet. I enjoy that as well.

My inlaws usually have a pot of Glug on the stove during Christmas (basically mulled wine with some overproofed rum added) which I have a hard time with, so I'm thinking I'll be nipping a wee drop of scotch, or two.... or three...

It is a simple egg nog spiked with Makers Mark. I also have a few bottles of wine. I will go get some beer today to go along with the cognac. I am well stocked for the holidays.
