I'm sure it would have been fun for us all to hang out together during the trip. I really enjoyed spending so much time in the parks with you and Katharina, but the time at the tea stand seating area when we just sat and talked was definitely one of my favorite parts.

I told Rosie I couldn't believe I didn't give her my cell number after we met so she could call me later when they got back to POP and I could come over and sit and talk for a while in a nice relaxed way. Of course if we had all done that, we might not have gotten any sleep that night. Too much fun and laughs.

It all ended way too soon as it was.......

Oh, I am looking forward to receiving mail from you!! Unfortunately it hasn't arrived yet. I had no idea that you took a picture of that Dinosaur picture. That should be hilarious!

The tea break was definitely a highlight! I think Katharina and I got a tea from there nearly every single time we were at AK!

I like how you are reporting this trip.

AK has so many nooks and crannies to surround you with nature and transport you to Africa and Asia.

Glad you were able to sit and relax with Marv. Sounds like a good time.

Good to know that people enjoy my different approach to this TR! I think with 12 days and my love for writing rather detailed, I think I would have never been able to finish a TR in the usual style...

I remember that we talked about the change in touring style when you wrote about how it was when you first bought your AP. To a certain extent owning DVC changed my touring as well, it was definitely more relaxed than ever before, but I still would want it to be even more relaxed. I still kind of feel that I need to do every attraction... I just need to practice relaxed touring even more on my next trip!!

Glad that you enjoyed it! The next updates will be rather pictureless, I am afraid. But I have already written quite a bit and once we get to Universal, there will be plenty of pictures!!

How very wonderful that AK is still number 1. I can imagine some of the trek additions are not pretty while on safari (though hanging over the hippos is really something everyone should get to do at least once!).

That dinosaur picture is a riot. AK is simply beautiful at night. I've been lucky enough to be there 3 times for EMH. They do offer it, but only at certain times of the year.

Cynthia, unfortunately they have cancelled all evening EMH at AK, I am quite sure about that. They have morning EMH twice a week now. I think that started some time last fall or so... However, recently they have extended the regular opening hours, so with early sunsets in Winter, there are some days where it will be open when it is dark outside.

I think one of the reasons why the stopped evening EMH was that there weren't that many attractions open with the animal displays closing at sunset.

Thoughts on Epcot:

I think I was surprised that this park came out on second place for both of us – especially since I recall very well Katharina's remark after her very first morning at Epcot's Future World in 2010 which was something along the lines of: "Are they serious to present something which looks like bad urban planning from the 80s as a theme park?" I still think that Future World needs a sleeker colour scheme and has to get rid of the tarps over the central plaza. But they have new signs, no longer the old, rather silly looking ones, and this is a step in the right direction.

So why did we like the park so much? I think for me it is the beauty of the World Showcase, the fact that there are a few very good attractions in Future World and this trip certainly also the ease of walking 5 minutes from our hotel. It really felt like this was “our park”.

For Epcot we had a very long list of new things we wanted to do. For easier reference, this is what I wrote in the PTR:

1. Tequila Bar in Mexico - both of us - we really need to make sure to get a drink here!!
2. Film in Canada - both of us - I have been wanting to see this film for years and never make time for it!!
3. China - both of us - not only the film and the exhibition there, but I have also read that the shop has gotten a refurbishment, so we are looking forward to seeing this as well!
4. Innovention East, especially StormStruck - new for Katharina - I thought it was a cute little show and Katharina wants to see it...
5. The American Adventure Pavilion - new for Katharina - we did not have the time on our last trip and we want to make sure to take in the exhibition there as well
6. Film in France - both of us - another one of the Epcot films I still haven't seen
7. Energy Pavilion - both of us
8. Kim Possible - new for Katharina - I think we will try to catch one or two games while we are in Epcot...
9. Turtle Talk with Crush – new for Katharina
10. Karamell Küche - both of us - I really don't like the idea of this shop because nearly everything being sold there is stuff which you would not be able to buy in Germany, but I really need to check it out in person...

Ok, out of those ten new things we managed to do seven things:

The World Showcase Films

First, we did make a point to see all the films in the World Showcase that we wanted to see: China, Canada and France – and enjoyed them to varying degrees.

First of all, I found out that while simulators don't affect my tendency towards motion sickness, I really had to concentrate during the circlevision films in China and Canada in order not to start to feel queasy!! So this is already a point in favour of France!

Canada:
A beautiful country and the film does show lots of it. I also found Martin Short quite amusing – at least once. I have the feeling that he might start getting on my nerves when I see the film more often. Which is a shame, because I feel that seeing those films definitely added to our World Showcase experience!

China:
This film felt a bit odd. There was so much emphasis on modern China. Which is something China may be proud of. But to me L'Oreal neon advertisment isn't China, but “Everycity” somewhere on this globe... There was some spectacular landscape being shown where one can only be in awe of so much natural beauty. But then the text to the film always felt like the Chinese government's propaganda and that did take away from it to a degree...

France:
This film confused me in the beginning. They just updated it to digital projection, so it is crystal clear and has perfect colours. Looks like a modern film – BUT then you see people dressed very oldfashioned – and somehow the streets in the village look like Europe in the 70s as well. At first I thought this was a period piece: a film shot today to look like it takes place in the past. But after the first confusion I realised it was just the film that they had made for EPCOT Center's opening in 1982, but in contemporary quality. It became absolutely obvious when you see the Eiffel Tower with cars parked underneath it.

The other things that surprised me when I saw this film: I realised how similar Germany and France are! Most of my visits to France have been to the Provence, an area in Southern France, which for some reason isn't really portrayed very much at all in the film. Southern France is rather different from Germany, more Mediterranean, but other areas of France have striking similarities. They showed castles, hills and mountains, fields and markets. And a lot looked very much like home, maybe slightly different.

All in all, I would say France was my favourite of the three films – and I think I will really try to see at least one of those films on future trips. So this covers 2., part of 3. and 6. from the list!!

I very much agree with Magdalene on the films. As I've been only to one of the three countries (in real, not in EPCOT), I can only say something about the french film. I think, besides their emphasis on mountains in the last bit, it portrayed France very well, right to the horrible accent in English.

Innoventions East:

This was just a very short visit there, but we did manage to see Storm Struck. We went there after we had to be evacuated off Ellen's Energy Adventure... But this is a story for when we talk about that attraction.

We got to see the last show of the day for Storm Struck. There you learn about how to make a house more weather proof. The group gets to make decisions on how to build a house which you then see in front of you on some large screens pretending to be the windows of the house you are sitting in, kind of across the street. Then a storm strucks (and it does get windy in your house as well!!) and you see how well you did in designing the house. It is a fun diversion, but for me who did it a second time it was not as cute as the first time around....

But at least we can say we did it and that was 4. from the list above!

Karamell Küche:

We did visit and I think the less I say about it, the better. Otherwise I just get grumpy. If you want to get some true German candy, don't get anything in the case, but on the walls they actually sell some products which are available in Germany. My recommendation would be the Toffifee (or Toffifay in the US), that is very nice!!!!

And let's not mention that the former candy shop is now called “Stein Haus” because they sell beer steins – which does not make any sense at all, since a beer stein isn't called “Stein” in German – that means only rock or stone...

Ok, but we did take care of 10. on the list.

The WS is just a great place to hang out in. And I am even not very much interested in a lot of the food since there seems no point in eating in any of the European restaurants if I have the real country so close to my home town...

Yes, it is really beautiful, I am a bit sad that I never made a point of really getting to see it before. Instead I did see the Norwegian film... I hope that Norway does get a new film at some point, theirs is definitely the weakest one.

I had no idea about the Stein, what is it called in Germany?

Bierkrug - Bier meaning beer and Krug meaning jug. Of course the material it is made of is called "Steinzeug" which means stoneware. So calling it "Stein" is like calling a dress "silk".

Thoughts on Epcot Part 2

So, let's continue with this...

The American Adventure Pavilion

We have to admit that it turned out that we did see the show last year – but forgot about it... But we did see it again and liked it a lot. I sometimes don't really understand the general love for audio-animatronics. For example while I like Pirates of the Caribbean, the figures there don't get me excited. But after seeing the American Adventure this time I realised, that if the audio-animatronics are true performers they are pretty incredible! So 5. should not have been on the list... Sorry!

But I guess you don't mind that we watched “your show” twice...


Ellen's Energy Adventure

We knew that this attraction takes quite some time, so we did really plan for it. We got there one evening at 6:30 pm with the plan to eat dinner afterwards. We had a short wait outside the pavilion and I peeked through the glass doors and saw some cool tiles in the mosaic in there which showed a countdown timer. I thought that looked very cool and was a bit sad that it was so hidden. And I was glad that it said something like 4 minutes... Soon enough we get to enter the building, find some seats on some benches and wait a bit more until a film starts starring Ellen who tells us about her dream... This is amusing enough.

And then we are supposed to walk into Ellen's dream – not without being warned that the next part of the attraction is 37 minutes long and that there will not be any possibility to leave the attraction. However, the warning is delivered by a bored CM mumbling along at a high speed... The doors open and we enter the next theatre, find a seat and the same CM starts telling us: “The attraction will be 37 minutes long and you can't leave, if you don't think you can stay on the attraction that long, you have to leave NOW!” Delivered once again mumbling and speaking very fast. I nearly did not understand what she was saying and I consider myself pretty fluent in English.

Her sentence was then immediately followed by the announcement: “The doors are closing now, remain seated and don't get up!” Shortly thereafter the CM shouts “Remain seated, the doors are closing, remain seated!!!” We see a family in another area of the theatre leaving the theatre very quickly... The attraction starts, but after the first sentence the lights go on – an emergency stop. Everyone needs to be “evacuated” from the theatre and they tell us that since it needs 20 minutes to reset it, there won't be anymore showings for the day...

I really think it was to a large degree the CM's fault that this happened. Her announcement was nearly not understandable and then there was really no time at all after she made it to actually act on it. I am sure what happened was that it took this family a little bit to realise what was being said, they shortly talked about it and when they wanted to do exactly what they were told to do, it was too late. I think if they feel the need to really warn people about it that much, they need to make it in a way which can be understood and then give people the opportunity to act upon it.

Ok, so you might think that this is one of the things we gave up on! But, no, I was determined to see this finally!! So on the next morning, after a first morning ride on Soarin, the second attraction we headed to was Ellen's Energy Adventure. Which btw attracts decent crowds. There never was a line, but both times I would say the theatre was at least 50% full.

And to my surprise I enjoyed the ride much more than I thought I would! I did not find it boring at all and those long 37 minutes (!!!) passed much quicker than expected. It is a fascinating concept for a theme park attraction. And while I think it would be a nice candidate for a quality update, I think it still works pretty well and is much less outdated than some other attractions (like, let's say the Great Movie Ride). I can even see this becoming a once every trip attraction for me!

So number 7. can also be crossed from the list.


The new things which remained new...

By way of elimination it is now obvious that the three things remaining are: Turtle Talk with Crush, Kim Possible and the Cava de Tequila!!

I am not sad about the first two, but about the Cava de Tequila. I think I blame the Food and Wine Festival for that since we did get some drinks in Epcot – but those were from the kiosks. And once again we found us inside the Mexican pavillion at 12:30pm and still wanted to do some more touring that afternoon and were afraid that a drink now would just make us tired, not happy...

But luckily I know that I will be back and then this will definitely a priority!!

Other random comments...

Besides those new attractions, we did also enjoy some of the older ones. Soarin is still a wonderful ride. I tried very hard to spot the Mickey ballon which Marv pointed out to us, but I guess I am just too slow for that.... Unfortunately I had the impression that the Soarin dust problem is getting worse and worse. Every showing of the film had multiple dark spots travelling around in the film. I recently read that it is much better at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim because there they invested in a true “clean room” for the projector.

I also realised how much I enjoy Spaceship Earth. I always liked it, as something which just fits that park so perfectly, but wasn't a huge fan. On our second ride this trip – just after our Energy Adventure – I just was so amazed about how much I enjoy it. While some attractions seem to become a little bit boring if you see them again and again, this is an attraction which keeps fascinating me. There is always something new to discover in the various scenes. It is a great attraction!

But I got really annoyed the second time we rode it by two people in different carts in front of us who took flash pictures all throughout the ride. It definitely took aways some of the experience, because I saw lots of construction behind the scenes. I was glad, when the cart turned over and we went down backwards...

And finally maybe the best thing about Epcot this time was that it was so close to our hotel! I loved being able to walk there within 5 minutes. It made mornings much more relaxed! Even though it also means that you will be behind the crowds at the Soarin FP machines because the walk from the International Gateway to Futureworld is longer than from the main entrance. The International Gateway was also priceless in the evenings. No hassle to get to a bus, we did even hang around in Epcot for a bit after Illuminations and then just strolled back to our resort. That's really wonderful and makes me want to stay in the Epcot resort area on every trip now... But there are so many interesting resorts to try out still...

Stormstruck...you may remember we saw some of the exhibits, but didn't go through the storm. If we're in the area, we'll do that, but I don't know how much time we'll spend in Innoventions since we spend a fair amount of time in there last year.

I was all set to say that I've never seen Ellen's Energy Adventure, and don't plan to....but you're making me wonder if I should rethink that. I don't know, we'll see how it works out. And yes, from your description it definitely sounds like the cast members contributed to the confusion with that family wanting to leave after the mumbled warning had been given.

I find this funny to! When in Germany we saw not one candy there with carmel! Lots of chocolate with hazelnuts! YUM! Mmmmmm.... Toffifee I just saw this at Aldi the other day! Next time I'll buy some!

Always interesting to see how different people rank the parks. AK grew on me last time I was there. I was discovering the level of detail in the theming more on our last trip.

That picture on Dinosaur is hysterical! Good for you for overcoming your doubts and riding it again!

It sounds like AK lighting up at dusk is a must-see...never experienced that before.

EPCOT is my personal favorite, so I'm glad to see that it rose in your rankings...I've always thought Ellen's Energy Adventure gets a bad rap. It's very long, yes, but it's fairly entertaining and a good chance to cool off and rest. I agree that it's much better than the Great Movie Ride! Seems like the CM needs to be a little more on-the-ball, though.

And it's good to know that the American Adventure is so memorable that you forgot you'd seen it!

I am sure that Marlene would love the France film, it is really very good! So I think the rest of your family would not have to suffer too much if you all go there for her.

If you haven't seen China and Canada in ages, then you certainly don't know the current forms... BUT you need to make sure to get to see the American Adventure! It is an excellent attraction. And I think I can be very objective about it since I can't be patriotic about it.

So go at least for the nerd factor. To be honest that's what got me there, being a "Disney nerd": One of the last original Epcot attractions, even if it is in an updated form...

Great to see you here, Mark! I am way behind on your report as well and really ought to comment about what I am reading at the moment. But your TR is so great that I really want to have the time to read it thoroughly. I really love it!

Indiana Jones is one I hadn't seen in a while either but wanted to make sure the weather was cool.

I am truly sad you didn't make it to La Cava, as that was one of my and LeeAnn's most memorable and wonderful times together on our last trip. Someday, it'd be great to get there and do that with you...
