1 single-serving, non-alcoholic beverage

I was reading about the 2012 DDP on the Disney website and noticed that it is "1 single-serving, non-alcoholic beverage" per person. Does this mean they are no longer refilling soft drinks?

No. It means that you can no longer get a two liter for a drink. All snacks/beverages are single serve now.

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about the snack portion of the DDP, I'm talking about the beverage you receive with a meal. Ex: Diet Coke with my dinner at LTT.

You can get a refill at any restaurant that normally offers refills. That won't change because you are on DDP.

Of course the 2012 dining plan isn't in effect yet...so there's no way to tell right now if the intent was to change that. But it's doubtful. I think the above poster is correct and the wording is to make it understood that it's a personal serving of a beverage.

if that wording is in there for 2011, I'd say be prepared for the non-Disney owned places to strictly interpret "one serving" as one serving, no refills. We've already seen that several times this year. Via Napoli (twice) and Yak & Yeti (once) this year has told us there are no refills on the soda, coffee or tea. Both places, the waiters explained the dining plan "only covered one beverage per person" so that's what we would get...one beverage, not unlimited refills. They did agree that our ice water (tap water) could be refilled, but actually never managed to get back and refill it.

So I guess in 2012 you might want to ask for your beverage without ice (the English way). And then get a cup of ice. That would be like 2 servings. Hopefully this isn't something that will be commonplace around WDW.

Good heavens. We ate at Yak & Yeti TS on a hot afternoon a few months ago and I don't want to even THINK about how many times the server came by, smiled, and refilled my iced tea. Did I mention that it was really, really hot? We were on the DDP and there was no extra cash charge for it.

I didn't even think that French press coffee was offered as a DDP beverage. I know I paid OOP for that at Ohana and I wouldn't even think they would offer me another pot as a refill.

The wording has been that way since at least 2010 (as far as I could go back "hacking" the links for the DDP brochure (2010 DDP)). I'd say if they offer refills to cash guests, they should offer them to DDP guests.

All 19 of the restaurants (well, 17, I ate at 2 twice) I went to last week had free soda refills.

Of course, consistency with anything is not Disney's strong point, so your mileage may vary.

A lot depends on your region. (And your definition of "more modern" )

Back up in NH, I remember most of the restaurants charging for refills up to about 15-20 years ago. Then in a fairly short amount of time, most had gone to free. I'm guessing that it started with a few restaurants, and that drove in business so it spread out from those (in that region).

I'm also relatively sure that I've heard that down here in the South, this switch happened a bit more recently, maybe 10 or so years ago.

Disney (and most of Florida) mirrors the North much more than it does the South, so I'd guess that they ventured into the realm of free buckets of soda a bit earlier than the rest of the South as well, but that's only guessing.

I also don't know of a single restaurant around me, nor around where I used to live in either NH or NJ that currently, or at the time (well, except for the pre-switchover described above) that actually charges for soft drink refills anymore.

It would be interesting to see the progression of the spread of it for sure, but that's just the nerd in me talking

I guess it depends on the server. I was at WDW Sept 10th-18th and was told by my waitress at Yak & Yeti that refills were no longer included with the beverages. Once I finished my soda, I had free water.

I was not on the DDP though. I was paying OOP and was told I would be charged for a second soda.

When we ate at Liberty Tree Tavern this Feb, we had a weird refill experience. DBF ordered a pop which he finished about half way through our meal. We always assume refills aren't free since not every place here offers free refills (though most do). When the server came back, he asked if they were free and she said no so he asked for water instead. She came back with a refill of his pop though saying she'd never drink Florida tap water herself, so she wasn't about to subject him to it either.

At Hollywood and Vine on the same trip, I finished off my milk (yes, an adult who orders milk , DBF doesn't let me live it down) and went to get more food after ordering a water. The server instead brought me a Sprite/7-UP/whatever it is... I think that was more an error than a 'free refill' though.
