Mummy - what makes it scary?

Hi. I have read in a few spots that the Mummy can be a scary ride for kids. Can someone please explain to me how the ride works and which parts would be scary? I am trying to judge the 'scare factor' to discuss w/ DS (9 yo).

Several things could scare a child.

There is an audioanimatronic mummy that yells at you plus (if it works) a celing that catches on fire, scarab beetles that stream out (not close to you really) and a few roller coaster type dives.

You might want to search for a youtube video of the ride. It's a blast!

For my particular DD, definitely the fire.

Lots of spoilers in this so don't read if you want the full effect of the ride:

The ride gives you the feeling that the mummy has 'taken it over'. So a "guide" at the beginning gets overpowered by the mummy. Then throughout the ride he's there threatening you. There are some pyrotechnics. The 3D video screens make it very realistic... I think at one point it makes it look like you're going through his elongated mouth. The scarab beetles breaking through the walls is pretty creepy, but it doesn't really come close to the ride like someone else said. At the "end" a silhouette of a park worker starts to thank you for riding, then the glass breaks and the mummy is there instead and the ride continues. At the end though you get a funny little video of Brendan Frasier chatting about the movie (and yes, the mummy makes a slight appearance in there too!)

The first year we did it my DD closed her eyes but rode it because she's a coaster fanatic. Now it doesn't scare her, but she's 13

I have found with these rides the best thing to tell the kiddies is if it seems like something is going "wrong" with the ride, that's the ride!

My son also did not care for the fire in the holding room. It's the heat that was a problem for the first time he went. Also he was 5 years old on his first time.

Now he's 9 and I can't keep him off of it.

I am not scared of it at all. I am concerned about the fire on the ceiling (at the fake end) and I always make sure my lapbar is not completely snug in case I have to slip out because of a fire malfunction. Sounds silly, but that's what I think about every time I am in that room (in addiiton to getting ready for the funny face I am going to make for the camera shot).

Well, I just went with my dad who is 61 and he was absolutely terrified. Not so much with the fake mummy's but with the actual ride as it is like a roller coaster in the dark. It did him in for the rest of the day!

Our first trip on Mummy was last month. Did anyone notice in the first room that several mummies are wearing cheap sunglasses?

It lightened the mood for DD, especially the bright purple rims on the one.

The ride once all the talking is over ( guide & Mummy), it is fast (think g force), dark, twisting, jerking, flares, fireballs, smoke, and loud. One of the best rides I have ever riden. I am counting down the days until I am strapped back in the seat again.

Those would be the things that would keep my 8 year old boy from enjoying it.

Also, he hasn't seen the movie(s), so he would have no context for understanding the story. I think even the line would get to him (it creeped me out!).

The ride's story is told in queue videos (which you won't see if it's a short wait). And yes, the queue is pretty dark.
