HH Dining

We haven't been to Hilton Head in nearly two years But we're going in about a month DH was checking on Trip Advisor for places to eat and of the top 20 restaurants - we had only heard of a few. We have been going to HH for 8 years nearly every year and have eaten out many times - just curious if there are a slew of new places to eat? We have eaten many times at The Old Oyster Factory, Marley's, Red Fish, Black Marlin and the places around Shelter Cove - wondering if we need to branch out this trip and try some of these new places.

i'm a big fan of roastfish and cornbread which was opened a few years ago by the guy who used to cook at the sea shack.

haven't heard of any of the top 10, though, except for michael anthony's...and i've only been to frankie bones in the top 20 (FB was excellent.)

but i wouldn't be afraid to try some new places at HHI...sounds like fun.

I agree with the PP about Roastfish and Cornbread. In addition to the places you've tried, we enjoy Hudsons-on-the-Docks (but go for lunch), CQs in Harbour Town, Alexander's in Palmetto Dunes, Cranes Tavern, the British Pub, Woody's near the Black Marlin for lunch, and my very favorite is the Old Fort Pub. What were Trip Advisor's top 20?

Try Skull Creek Boat house. We just got back and ate there twice! The Ceviche is awesome too. Everything seafood wise is fresh. We had 3 non sea food eaters so alot of the places we wanted to eat were out because of that.

That's our favorite as well. Every year we ask Mike the pool guy. He is a wealth of information. Tell him Scott from Ohio sent you!

Some time we've got to meet this Mike the pool guy! Another one to ask is Gordon in the Mercantile-Gordon knows his food. He's a chef and used to offer a private dining experience thru the resort.

I didn't look up the entire list but when we went last summer we really enjoyed Roastfish & Cornbread, One Hot Mamas and Truffles Cafe. We also tried Alligator Grille (good but small portions & a bit pricey but we got a coupon from restaurants.com for that one), Guiseppe's (just OK) and we tried that Mexican place across the little inlet / harbor right there by the resort crazy2: ICK!)

We tried A Low Country Backyard last October because it was the number one restaurant on Trip Advisor (Jazz Corner must be new?). Well, we couldn't figure out how in the world A Low Country Backyard got to be number one. It wasn't cheap (around $75 for 2 adults & 2 children) and the food wasn't great. I had 3 very small, very salty crab cakes with a side of mashed potatoes for $20. DH liked his meatloaf sandwich. And kids had grilled cheese. We had an appetizer that I don't recall. ?? And banana puddings for dessert (we all liked my banana pudding better).

Its VERY SMALL inside, seats probably 20-30 people at the most. The "backyard" is nice (and holds more people) but rarely do I wish to eat outside when its really hot outside. Its kind of tucked away so harder to locate than most. Thank goodness we had a GPS otherwise we probably wouldn't have found it.

I think I'd definitely go with some of the suggestions on the DIS from HHI veterans over the Trip Advisor list. We didn't eat out a whole bunch on our trip to HHI and not a single place we tried we came away saying, "Wow, we are going here next trip!".

I can't think of anywhere else we dined. Can't wait to go back and try some new places.

We're planning to try Robert Irvine's eat! this weekend. It gets good reviews and sounds like an interesting menu. Located in Wexford Plaza (near the SP circle) and they take reservations.

Be sure to post here with a review of Eat, please. I'm a Food Network Junkie and watch Robert Irvine's shows all the time I'd love to try his resturaunt. It's probably the only thing in Wexford Village that could drag me away from the gelato place in there.

Oh, you should try the British Pub in Wexford, too! (Then get the gelato for dessert!) We're leaving to go down tomorrow and plan to try EAT! on this trip. After watching Robert Irvine rip apart and rebuild other people's restaurants, his own better be above reproach.

While poking around on the eat! website I noticed they have cooking classes twice a month. Not sure how hard it is to get a spot but it's definitely on my must-do list sometime. We leave for HH tomorrow and I'm dying because there is a prix-fixe special event TONIGHT with special menu and wine pairings...6 courses I think. Looks divine. Anyway, if you are interested in these things, keep an eye on the website when planning future trips there.

When we stay at HH in a few weeks, we hope to eat at EAT! also.

When we were at HH last year, they were advertising that Irvine was doing cooking classes at the resort! I never saw him there, so, I don't know if this was really true or not.


We'll probably hit Signe's, the Grills at the pool and beach houses, and at least one Pizza joint. We're contemplating Capt'n Woody's, and a few other places.

We just got home (like 2 hours ago) from HHI.

Here is where we ate -

In order of most favorite to least favorite.

1. Old Oyster Factory
2. Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House (Savannah)
3. San Miguels
4. Salty Dog
5. Parrot's Cove
6. Roastfish and Cornbread

Of these the only one we were really disappointed in was Roastfish. The thing is we went there for fried seafood, but we get great Calabash style seafood right here at home (in fact we eat it about every other week). In our opinion, the seafood at Roastfish was just too heavily breaded and for the price I thought the portion size was rather small. Having said that, the sides we had were delicious - some of the best Mac n Cheese either of us have ever had. I told DW we may go back again next trip and go for lunch and just get a veggie plate.

I've eaten at half of these. The Studio is okay - they had a piano player for entertainment while I was there. Main Street Cafe - okay. Bistro and Seagrass were both good. Michael Anthony's is one of my favorites.

I don't eat out much when I stay in a timeshare -- but I will definiely go back to Dye's ( http://www.dyesgullahfixins.com/ ) next time I get to go to Hilton Head. Really enjoyed lunch there (no "atmosphere" tho).
