Anniversary, Pregnancy, and 3.5 Generations at WDW! DxDP Update: Whispering Canyon!

The bangers and mash look delicious. I might get a similar dish at Raglan Road in a few days, since we don't have time to fit in R&C.

Ooh, I can't wait to see your review of Raglan Road. We didn't have time to fit that in on this trip, but I've seen a lot of good reviews and was hoping to try it next time.

I'm a little flip-flopped with you....LOL. I'm from Indiana, now living in MN, but hoping to be in FL someday. I went to IU--lots of friends went to Ball St!! Congrats on the kidlet!

Loving your report. I keep laughing at your DH's taste. We love, love Rose & Crown. Eat there just about every single time. I usually just get a huge bowl of the soup and bread and am a happy camper.....

Waiting eagerly to hear more of your trip. You guys all look so happy!

Lovely reviews and lovely photos and I am getting a serious complex over my own sorely inadequate food photography skills after being on this website. :lmao:

Can't wait to read the rest of your reviews!!

Loving your reviews! Thanks for sharing!!!! I would have loved to take a family trip with my parents but its not possible anymore. As a parent of a BSU grad I had to laugh about your comments on Muncie winters. :rotfl2: Our son graduated a few years back and he couldn't believe the difference between snow removal (lack of) in Muncie and up here in the NW corner. Looking forward to the rest of your reviews and yes, we do miss our parent visits to BSU!!!! It was a lot of fun.

First, thanks for all of the lovely comments/compliments! I've enjoyed everyone else's dining reviews so much, and they helped me to select our ADRs for this trip, so it's nice to hear that mine are helpful too. :goodvibes

Our final ADR on 8/10 was for Tokyo Dining. I knew that everyone would want to go to one of the Japanese TS restaurants, but deciding which one was more difficult. We had never been to Tokyo Dining and we had dined at Teppan Edo on previous trips, but none of us remembered raving about it or absolutely loving it. I know that a lot of people here recommend Teppan Edo, but I didn't think DH would be into the whole sitting with other families thing, and after looking at pictures of the food from the lovely reviews on this board , I went with Tokyo Dining. Now, no one but me likes sushi, but I knew that DH, Mom, and Grandma love tempura and would all enjoy it. I wasn't pregnant when I made our ADRs, so I had planned on having sushi. By the time we arrived at WDW, however, my plans had obviously changed! When we arrived, I was a bit worried about the ADR and not sure I'd made the right decision--so many people recommend Teppan Edo, and having your food cooked in front of you is kind of fun.

We walked around the Japan pavilion a bit before checking in at the restaurant. We got to see the Taiko drummers, which was neat.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of the inside of the restaurant, but it was very nice. I hadn't remembered that Tokyo Dining and Teppan Edo share a waiting area, and you actually have to walk through Tokyo to get to Teppan. Both restaurants were extremely busy, and we had to wait about 20 minutes for our ADR (the first time we'd really had to wait at all for anything!). When we were seated, though, everything was great. Our server was very attentive even though she obviously had a lot of tables assigned to her. She brought us warm, wet towels to clean our hands prior to the meal, which was a nice touch. I also didn't get pictures of the menu, but the non-sushi menu was the same as the allears menu.

For their appetizers, Grandma and Mom ordered the garden salad with sesame dressing. It didn't look like anything special, but they both rated it a 4 and said that the dressing was amazing.

w61-1.jpg

DH ordered the karaage, which was basically fried chicken with a sweet dipping sauce. I tried a piece and thought the breading was very nice, if a bit mild. But DH likes mild, so he rated this a 4. He ate all of it, so he must have liked it...

w60.jpg

Finally, since I knew I wouldn't be ordering a tempura entree, I got the tempura appetizer. I don't eat shrimp, so I donated mine to DH, and he seemed to enjoy them. I also forgot to take a picture until after I had started eating (I was so hungry!), so apologies for the half-eaten food pictures. The shrimp is not pictured, but you'll get to see it in all of the entrees anyway. The rest of the appetizer consisted of a chicken strip, zucchini, and something that I think was a yam (it was orange and a bit crunchy). I rated this a 4. The tempura was very good and the veggies were crisp-tender--just how I like them!

w59.jpg

For their entrees, Grandma, Mom, and DH all ordered tempura. Grandma and DH got the roppongi, which is tempura shrimp and scallops. It also came with a cucumber salad (sunomono), a noodle dish (somen salad), and miso soup.

w65.jpg

I was a bit slow with all of my pictures that night--DH had already donated his miso soup to me by the time I snapped this picture. He didn't like the soup; I thought it was pretty good, but definitely not the best miso I've had. I think I'd rate it a 3. DH gave his meal a 4 overall, but he didn't like any of the accompaniments, so basically all he ate was tempura and rice. I guess he really liked the tempura. I tried a bit of his cucumber salad and the noodles and thought they were both delicious, especially the cucumber salad. It had a very nice flavor and the cucumbers were still crunchy. Grandma, who had the same meal, rated it a 5. She loved the noodles, which had some kind of vinegar sauce or flavoring on them, and she devoured her cucumber salad. Both DH and Grandma thought that the scallops were the best part of the meal and Grandma noted that they were perfectly cooked. DH ate every last bite of his scallops, so again, I'm going to assume that they were really good. :woohoo:

For her entree, Mom chose the Ebi (tempura shrimp). I can't find it on the menu anywhere, but it came with different sides and tempura veggies. She thought the veggies, especially the green beens, were very good. Mom rated this a 5. She loved the tempura, and she surprised herself by falling in love with the seaweed salad. She had tried sushi before and hated the seaweed wrapper, but she loved this salad.

w62.jpg

For my entree, I decided to be healthy and went with the Japanese-style grilled breast of chicken with teriyaki sauce. I donated my rice to DH (the man can eat a LOT of rice in one sitting!) and enjoyed the chicken and vegetables. Again, the vegetables were perfectly cooked to a nice crisp-tender, and the chicken was moist and flavorful. I was very satisfied with this entree even though it wasn't tempura or sushi, and gave it a 4.

w63.jpg

The highlight of the night for me was, of course, sushi! Fortunately, Tokyo Dining has a little vegetarian icon next to their vegetarian sushi items, and they also tell you which meat/fish is cooked and which ones are raw. I decided that I couldn't possibly eat a meal at Tokyo Dining without sushi, so I ordered the cucumber roll, after double checking with the server to make sure that it had no raw fish in it and asking her to make sure it was sliced with a clean knife. Individual sushi orders are not included on DxDP, so I had to pay out of pocket for this one, but it was definitely worth the $4! This sushi was so simple, and yet so amazing. As you can see, it was just the wrapper, rice, cucumber, and sesame seeds. I drizzled a bit of teriyaki sauce over it and ended up eating every bite. Did I mention that it was amazing? I'm getting hungry again for sushi just by looking at the picture! Maybe it's just because I love sushi and have been so deprived for the past few months, but I thought it was the best part of the meal. I rated this a 5. It is also very pretty...

w64.jpg

For dessert, DH and Mom decided to be sticks in the mud and ordered vanilla soft-serve ice cream. In all fairness, this was very good. DH gave it a 4 and Mom gave it a 5. It was light and fluffy and had a nice vanilla flavor. But...it was just soft-serve ice cream!

w66.jpg

Grandma got the green tea pudding. She gave this a 4. I tried a bite and thought it was very tasty. The green tea flavor was very mild, and the pudding was not too sweet. It was more like flan/custard than what Americans think of as pudding, but it was very good.

w68.jpg

Finally, I ordered the chocolate ginger cake. This was phenomenal--I gave it a 5. The ginger flavor was very light and was only present in the bottom cake layers. There was also a layer of chocolate mousse and chocolate fudge frosting on top. The flavors combined perfectly. I need to find a recipe for this, stat.

Overall, we all really enjoyed Tokyo Dining. It was my favorite non-signature TS, and Mom and Grandma both preferred it over Teppan Edo, which they remembered from our last visit to Disney in the early 2000s. This is a must-visit on all future trips to WDW--especially since next time, I will actually get to order a full sushi meal!

Thanks so much for the Tokyo Dining review! That's actually one of the restaurants that I've been considering trying on my trip right now, and I think your review is pushing me in favor of trying it (but that could change by tomorrow :rotfl:). Both of the non-soft serve dessert options look great - I think I would try the green tea pudding, since I like both green tea and flan.

Im enjoying your reviews! When I went to Teppan Edo I had the green tea pudding but tried a bite of my dad's ginger cake it was amazing! I am glad you loved it because I don't see that great of reviews on it. I liked the ginger cake more than the green tea pudding.

Thank you so much for your Tokyo Dining review...Dh took one look at the pictures and said book that! I just cancelled R&C for it and we cant wait!

Wow.That view from your room is really, really pretty!! WDW gets it right every time. The theme of that hotel is right on! Everything is SOO GREEN. Beautiful Reosrt, LUCKY YOU!!!

We've been to Teppan Edo twice and didn't really want to go back this time, so we are trying Tokyo Dining. I was pretty nervous because you don't see reviews on it very often. Thanks for posting this! I think we'll be JUST FINE! :woohoo:

DH and I did not do a very good job using up our snack credits on this trip. We were so full from all of the meals that we just didn't have any appetite for sweets. However, I did try on the first day. We ended up using most of our credits for cold, slushy drinks (frozen Coke, kakigori, etc.), and then, at the end, we brought a bunch of Rice Krispie Mickey treats home for my friends and their children.

Anyhow, while we were at Epcot, I decided that I had to at least try school bread, even if I could only eat a few bites. I've heard so much about it on these forums! Now, school bread is one of the few Norwegian desserts that my family has never made and has never heard of at all. We went to the Kringla Bakery and Cafe. I did not take a picture of the inside, but they had a lot of delicious treats in addition to the school bread. DH did not order anything because he was still full from lunch.

Sorry, I took a bite before I remembered to take the picture. I ended up only eating a bit of this, but I'd rate it a 3.5. The custard filling was delicious, and I loved the toasted coconut on top, but the bread was very blah. It tasted like regular white bread, and it seemed kind of stale and dry as well, which is not to my liking. If the bread had been fresh, this might have gotten a 4. Next time we go to Epcot, I will be trying the cloudberry horn or the rice cream instead. Veiled maiden is one of my favorite desserts, but I make that all of the time at home, so I don't need to order it at Kringla. :)

Later in the afternoon, DH and I were both very hot and tired, and as we passed the Japan pavilion, we decided to search for kakigori. Japan has several food and beverage stands, so it took us a while to find the right stand, which is on the left side of the pavilion if you're walking past it, and to your right if you're exiting from Japan, if that makes any sense. DH went with the strawberry kakigori, although he tried the melon later during the trip, and I went with the melon.

w47-1.jpg

w48-1.jpg

I gave mine a 5 and DH gave his a 4. DH thought the strawberry syrup was a bit too sweet and did not like how most of the syrup pooled at the bottom of the ice, but to me, that's just how shaved ice is. I thought the melon flavor was absolutely divine, and it was the perfect way to cool off and relax in the middle of a hot summer afternoon at Epcot. Now that I'm home, I'm scouring the Internet in an attempt to find the same melon syrup so that I can make my own kakigori at home!

Next up: breakfast at the Whispering Canyon Cafe...

I hope you'll be as satisfied as we were! I had some sushi and tempura at a local Japanese restaurant after we got home and it just wasn't the same... :sad1:

We were so lucky to be upgraded, particularly at WL. It is definitely our favorite resort. It may not be on the monorail, and the rooms might be a bit smaller than some of the other deluxes, but you can't beat the theming! :lovestruc

Thank you so much for your Tokyo Dining review...Dh took one look at the pictures and said book that! I just cancelled R&C for it and we cant wait!

Wow, I hope your food looks and tastes as good as ours does, then! :goodvibes I think R&C is a great restaurant as well, but it just didn't compare to Tokyo for us.

One of the advantages of having family on the trip is that everyone can order different desserts and then you can sample a bit of all of them! I liked the green tea pudding, but I was glad that I'd ordered the ginger cake, so that I could eat most of it... :cool1:

Thanks! I felt the same way about the cake and pudding. I guess you'll know what to order the next time you go... ;)

SAD NOTE: After walking around Epcot with a backpack of supplies (sunblock, umbrellas, etc.) on 8/10, DH discovered that his back was acting up. I don't have chronic back pain (yet--maybe I will after this pregnancy ), so I volunteered to carry the backpack of supplies for the rest of the trip. This meant that I couldn't carry my camera bag, which contained my dSLR camera and all of the various lenses that I was using to take pictures. I had brought my point and shoot camera with, so I used that for the rest of the trip. Unfortunately, this means that all of the subsequent pictures are of much lower quality, and many of them are blurry. I couldn't get the flash on the P&S to function correctly, so I had a lot of trouble taking indoor pictures. Apologies in advance for the blurry food pictures--I tried my best! :sad2:

On the second full day of our trip (8/11), we had a breakfast ADR at the Whispering Canyon Cafe. DH and I wanted to get to Hollywood Studios when it opened, so we wanted a fairly quick breakfast at the hotel instead of having to travel to one of the other resorts for a character breakfast. We had also planned to pay OOP for this, so we wanted these meals to be fairly cheap. In addition, we had been so full yesterday after breakfast that we wanted to have a light breakfast this time so that we'd have room for our lunches! Now, some of you might be thinking that we should have just skipped breakfast, but Mom and I both have low blood sugar, and there's no way I would have been able to walk through HS for 3-4 hours with no food while waiting for lunch. We were also curious to see if we would still get the WCC "experience"--i.e., asking for ketchup, rowdy antics, etc. Grandma, Mom, and I had eaten there several times on previous trips when we stayed at WL and we'd enjoyed it, and we don't mind the antics.

We were the first table to be seated, but the restaurant filled up pretty quickly even though it wasn't yet 8 a.m.:

f10.jpg

Here is an accurate menu listing, but the prices were at least $1 more for every dish when we were there. DH's bagel and cream cheese were $5, as was the oatmeal, which I thought was just ridiculous.

As mentioned, DH ordered a bagel and cream cheese for his breakfast.

r1.jpg

DH rated this a 3. He said that the bagel was nicely toasted, but it was nothing special. He could have had the same thing at home for 1/4 the price.

Grandma, Mom, and I all got the oatmeal. To be fair, this was a HUGE bowl of oatmeal. It was probably 2 cups worth, which was much more than any of us could eat. I wish they'd halve the portion size and charge less...

r2.jpg

This was actually very, very good oatmeal. We all rated it a 4. It was mixed with milk and was obviously not instant oatmeal. They brought brown sugar to the table to mix in and also gave us a cinnamon shaker. Perhaps it was just the magic of Disney, but my oatmeal at home never tastes this good!

Grandma also got a side of bacon with her oatmeal. She rated this a 4 as well. She said that it was tasty, but not the best she'd ever had.

r3.jpg

Mom had a berry yogurt smoothie with her oatmeal. She rated this a 4.5. I tried a bit and it was indeed very good. The raspberry flavor was the strongest, but did not overpower the blueberry or strawberry. It was tart and not too sweet, which Mom also liked. She liked it so much that she ordered it again during our second breakfast at WCC the next day.

r4.jpg

Although it was early in the morning, our server was full of WCC spirit. She teased us while we were ordering. Mom said she wanted an, "Uh," and then trailed off because she had forgotten what the smoothie flavors were. The server yelled over to the kitchen staff on the other side of the room and asked if they had any "uh" in the back room. The kitchen staff dutifully went into the kitchen to research this and returned to let us know that they were fresh out of "uh." So Mom got the smoothie instead. ;)

We enjoyed this meal. It was nothing special, but everything was tasty and well prepared. We also enjoyed the atmosphere and our server's antics. But we had two ADRs at WCC, so I still have another WCC breakfast to review...maybe our opinion will change!

I'm joining in, you have really good reviews on things I may have to try to change some ADR's!
