Check ID to see if DVC card is mine for dining discount?

On Aug 18 I had lunch at Les Chefs, and used my DVC discount.
I presented my DVC card, and he asked for my driver's license too.
I gave it to him, and asked why. He said so servers could not run things through on a DVC discount and pocket the discount difference if I was paying cash. I had not problem presenting my ID, but that explaination makes no sense. How do servers have DVC cards to run through unless the customer gives them one? He looked at my drivers license quite closely, as if to check that is was fake or real. No problem, but being from France, is he really that familiar with the different states drivers licenses to spot a fake? I don't think I could. Then he returned it to me. If it was a possible server pocketing the difference problem, wouldn't someone else need to look at it as well. It just makes no sense. Again, no problem showing it. It is the only restaurant I used DVC discount. Has anyone else been asked for ID? Can someone give a more logical explaination?
I think I have read on here that managers need to do Tables in Wonderland adjustment. It would have made more sense if manager had done this, or even been shown the ID.

I would guess that it's POSSIBLE for a server to have a legitimate DVC card and write down the numbers to use later on with non-DVC guests??

Or have someone going down renting someone else's points and have a really NICE dvc owner who let them also use their card for these very types of discounts.. I'm not sure either, just trying to make SOME type of sense out of it.

I will check to see if they ID us when we go in a few weeks.

I don't find it unusual at all. I have been asked on numerous occasions, not just restaurants but also at retail locations offering the DVC discount. I always carry my drivers licence with my DVC card for that very reason - I can totally understand why they do this, because I'm sure plenty of people lend their card to friends or family who are going, so they can receive the discount. I'm sure the server was just "guessing" at a reason, but had been told to verify that the person handing over the card was the person who owned the DVC membership.

Yes, that would make sense. I would like to let my daughter use my DVC card for any applicable discounts while staying on my points if the time arises. So far, happily, she has been with me when she has gone. That would be nice, however, but I guess the discounts are meant for owner only?
We can get immediate family living in household AP discount. I wonder if only the owner can present the card for dining discount?

Yes, I usually don't carry my drivers license around WDW. Had it this time. Earlier in the trip, I kept my wallet in the wall safe, so didn't have it with me. Took it out when I changed resorts, and just kept carrying it without meaning to necessarily. Don't know what would have happened if I didn't.

It's never happened to me but I have to say that if it did, I would request that a supervisor/manager do the verification. If they're that concerned, fine, but I 'm going to CMA too, at least as much as I can. Too much information on a DL for my tastes. I draw the line at showing a waiter my DL and won't let them take my CCs anymore unless I follow them (not true at WDW because I use my KTTW card for charging).

And if managers need to process Table in Wonderland discounts, do they ask for ID first also?

Yes, I have been asked for ID when using the TiW card.

We recently returned from Disneyland and many times when I asked about a DVC discount I not only had to show my DVC card [of course] but my driver's license also. One time it was brought to my attention I was using my DH's DVC card, not my own - I hadn't even noticed before and many CMs had not noticed it either. I had to go find him so he could show his ID matched it, even though our last names are the same. I thought it a little over-kill for a $1.00 discount at the time . . . but fair enough, I guess.

I hope this ID thing is not catching on. I routinely carry only my DVC card and my KTTW card because they are easily replaced if lost.

I'm pretty sure that's the way it's supposed to be. I'm the Associate on our account, I don't have a card in my name, and I would never think I could use DH's card if he wasn't with me.



To me, the action of checking ID makes sense (I have a TIW card and they checked my ID *every* time I used it to make sure it was me), but the reason he gave (made up on the spot?) makes absolutely not one little bit of sense.

Checking the card to see if you are eligible to get the discount makes sense but the stated reason makes no sense to me. If the server were inclined to give a "discount" and pocket the difference, this process as described, would not affect that in any way. Now if he took it to a manager to verify, that could serve the stated purpose. A serve could just as easily make that up on their own and memorize your DL info and number. IF they were involved in identify theft, they would have a lot more info than before.

Not a DVC card, but there was a "seller" on EBAY renting his AP just to give the 'renters' free parking and meal discounts.

So I can understand why they need to compare the ID with the name on the card. Sure they might not find a fake ID but it would slow down things like the EBAY stunt!

And you should always carry some ID. You would be amazed how many "john does" wind up in hospitals around the US stressing both the system and thier family until everyone finds each other. Do not assume "my wife will be with me to identify me"

Verifying the ID of the person presentin a discount card is not necessarily an unusual thing and may be something that that restaurant/server has come across in the past and generally ask. It keeps the system somewhat honest so people are not taking advantages of the perks (which would mean more cutbacks). It would be intersesting to see what would happen if you didn't have ID and I would venture to guess a manager would come talk with you, compare your resort room ID plus membership card and accept it as face value. But, really I guess they could deny the discount....
