Please join me in celebrating my 50th Birthday...Deluxe Style! FINALLY COMPLETE

Very nice Jiko review. The amarula crème brûlée sounds wonderful - I'd like to try it next time, along with the filet (although I would get it with the accompaniments shown on the menu and not with mac n' cheese).

Thanks Donald! Hopefully your filet (without the mac & cheese) will be better than mine. I think I'll be ordering something else though on my next visit to Jiko...like maybe the short rib. :thumbsup2

Nice report, just checked out a bunch of the dinner reviews. :thumbsup2

Thanks for reading, canoe86! :)

Thanks for the reviews!

Does it sound to anyone else like maybe the new chef at Jiko is perhaps a little less committed to mac and cheese, which might be the reason why its quality has suffered? Honestly though, a lot can change in a restaurant in ten years, and I think Jiko is one that was a roller coaster for a long time in that reviews were either very good or very bad. Seem to be more consistently good since the chef-switch, though--maybe mac and cheese just isn't his thing. Though I seem to remember there being issues with the mac and cheese for awhile, predating the chef and menu switch.

We went in March, and had an earlyish res, which I think helped with the lighting situation, since there was lots of daylight. No one attempted the filet, and everyone really enjoyed their meals.

I'm glad DD got a meal she really liked.

Yes, I think you are probably right about the new chef regarding the macaroni & cheese. The rest of our food was great, so I'd like to give Jiko another try sometime and order a different entree. I just hope I don't have to wait another 10 years.

Great Jiko review :thumbsup2

Sorry your entree didn't quite hit the mark, it's often the way when you remember something being so outstanding

My DH had the same entree as your DD last time we were there and loved it

I have to say that we both loved our dinner there and would love to go again but I think Sanaa will be next on the list :goodvibes

Linda, you must try either the Malawi Mango Margarita or the Kande Coconut Cooler, or both. Sanaa has some yummy cocktails! :thumbsup2

Those short ribs are amazing! I had them in may. I also love the Amarula creme brulee...I think its better than the old pistachio creme brulee. ;)

Jill in CO

Yes, DD definitely made the better choice. She still talks about how good her entree was at Jiko. ;)

I love your review of the tea at the Grand Floridian! I hope to do that one day, and I'm really hoping I'll be able to bring my mother because she'd love that sort of thing. I spent a semester abroad in England and one thing I really enjoyed was going to Sunday morning tea at one of the hotels - it looks like GF has a lot of similar options that the place I went to in England had :)

I hope you get to have tea at the Grand with your mother some day, very soon. :)

Breakfast at KONA CAFÉ

IMG_4950.jpg

We were seated just inside the restaurant at a table for two on the right side.

Once again DD agreed to go to breakfast with me as long as we shared an entrée. But she made the mistake of saying I could choose the entrée…anything on the menu. Well, I was really hungry so what did I choose??? ;)

IMG_4954.jpg

The Big Kahuna

Yep, I chose the largest entrée on the menu, the Big Kahuna. :rotfl:
This included French Toast, Pancakes topped with Pineapple Sauce and Macadamia Nut Butter, Eggs (Scrambled), Home-fried Potatoes, Ham, Bacon, and Sausage. Our server gave us an extra plate and we split up the food ourselves. DD doesn’t like pancakes so I got all of them. These were delicious! I’ve heard that the full order of Macadamia-Pineapple Pancakes is even better than those you get with the Big Kahuna. If that’s true than I can’t wait to try them! DD took all the French toast, which she said was good but not as good as the French toast at the Grand Floridian Café. The rest of the food we split evenly. Everything was good, but my favorite thing on the platter was definitely those pancakes. :thumbsup2

DD jumped at the chance to have some real coffee and ordered a press pot of Kona coffee for us to share.

IMG_4953.jpg

French Press Pot of 100% Kona Coffee

So what’s better than having a really good breakfast to start off your morning? Having a really good breakfast just steps away from our room, allowing us to have a little after-breakfast nap to prepare us for a day at EPCOT, which stands for Every Person Comes Out Tired. Doesn’t it??? :lmao:

And so I can calculate my total savings with Tables in Wonderland…

Wow! What a great report!

So glad we are trying YMS next trip - can't wait!

We felt the same about Sanaa, big disappointment. Especially as DF is a veggie and lots of people recommend it :(

I am a HUGE fan of the tea. It's my favorite afternoon tea anywhere in the "real" world!

And as for your question about Jiko--I had built it up in my mind too. We had the delish flatbread and thought, "we're golden!" Well, not so much. I ordered the filet medium. It came out mooing. I sent it back. Came back again and was still mooing, but I ate it anyway. It was stringy and tasteless-except for a
strong-iron taste. Tasted like old meat...Mac & cheese was flavorless and gritty. Our server was a chatty cathy--to the point that it was annoying. She would come by and talk about her kid forever. It was a very, very disappointing meal. All of those wonderful reports I heard....dashed.....I haven't been back, but that short rib might entice me to go back!

I loved reading all your reviews! I am looking forward to the last two, but I am not looking forward to it ending. Couldn't you have stayed longer and eaten at a few other places?;):)

Thanks disneybex! :) I hope you have a great dinner at Yachtsman. Oh, and best wishes on your upcoming Disney wedding. What a great place to get married! :thumbsup2

I agree that the food at Sanaa was disappointing, but on the bright side...I really liked their cocktail drinks.

Thanks for reading Jeafl! I really wish I could have stayed a lot longer as there were so many more restaurants that I wanted to try. For me, that's the hardest part about planning a Disney trip. So many great restaurants to try, but SO NOT ENOUGH TIME!. :sad2:

And I'm sorry for again being MIA with my last reviews. :guilty: In the last week, both my daughters went off to college. So I've been spending all my free time doing laundry, shopping, packing, driving, and unpacking. Wow, I could really use a vacation now...another Disney vacation! :lmao: Anyway, I'll post my La Cava review very, very soon.

LA CAVA DE TEQUILA

SHORT VERSION

Highlights – Avocado Margarita, Complimentary Drink

Disappointments – No longer serve Tostadas

Would we return? - Yes

LONG VERSION

Since we were the first ones in the bar we had our choice of seats.

IMG_4963.jpg

Beautiful Wall Mural

Our server gave us menus and I immediately noticed that the tostadas that I love (and planned to order) were not anywhere to be found. When I asked about the missing tostadas, I was told that they had just come out with new menus this week and sadly the chicken and crab tostadas were no longer available at La Cava. :scared1:

Although not as good as the tostadas, the chips and guacamole that we ordered were quite good. This, along with chips and salsa and shrimp cocktail were the only food choices still available on the new La Cava menu.

IMG_4960.jpg

Chips and Guacamole

And we of course also each ordered one of their Specialty margaritas. ;) DD had the Blood Orange Margarita, described in the menu as El Mayor Premium silver Tequila, triple sec, and a sweet-tart mix of blood orange juice and hibiscus syrup, served on the rocks with hibiscus Himalayan salt rim for $12.50. While this was good, it was not as good as the one I had here on my last trip. However, my choice, the Avocado Margarita, was outstanding! The Avocado Margarita is described in the menu as El Mayor Premium silver Tequila, melon liqueur, fresh avocado, agave nectar and fresh lime juice, served frozen with hibiscus Himalayan salt rim for $13.50.

IMG_4957.jpg

Blood Margarita and Avocado Margarita

Not only did the Blood Orange Margarita taste different than last time, but it looked very different. Previously, this margarita was topped with blood orange foam and was served in a different glass.

IMG_4001-1.jpg

Blood Orange Margarita from my Nov. 2010 Trip

As we were finishing our margaritas, our server surprised us with this…

IMG_4965.jpg

Complimentary Classic Margarita

The Classic Margarita is described in the menu as El Mayor premium white Tequila, with orange liqueur, agave nectar and fresh lime juice, served on the rocks with a cactus-lemongrass Himalayan salt rim for $12.50. However, our drink did not come with a salt rim, probably because it was free. :confused3

So although I was very disappointed that my beloved tostadas are gone :sad1:, I did discover my new favorite Disney World margarita. :thumbsup2 I’ll definitely be going back to La Cava for another Avocado Margarita, but I guess I’ll have to go to San Angel Inn for my tostada fix! ;)

Sadly, no TIW discount is offered at La Cava.

I have been seeing so much about La Cava recently - and I can't believe that not only have I never been in there - I've never even noticed it! And we go a lot!:) I leave for my girls trip on Friday - I am going to find this place and check it out!!

Can you explain La Cava? (I'm another one who can't remember seeing it). It looks more like an adults place. Can you take kids in or get takeaway margeritas. I do love a margerita and the guacamole looks scrummy.

La Cava de Tequila is located inside the Mexico pavilion in Epcot's World Showcase. As you enter the marketplace area it is to the right. Since it is a bar, it does have more of an adult environment. During my two visits to La Cava I did not see any children inside, but I'm sure there probably has been at some point in time. The only time my DD (age 21) was carded was when she actually ordered a margarita, not when she entered the bar. Although I have not gotten a margarita to go here, I've heard of people that have.

A girls trip...sounds like fun!!! Hope you enjoy La Cava. :thumbsup2

The breakfast at Kona looks outstanding! So much food, my dad would love that. La Cava looks nice, though I have heard from others about the tostadas being gone - that's a shame. I'm actually not a big fan of tequila so it's not something I plan on doing, but still fun to see your pics!

I'm drooling over that Avocado Margarita!! Can't wait to have mine this Thursday!!!! I'm sad to hear about the tostadas, too (I wonder if they removed the food items to discourage kids?)...but I really go for the Margarita!

I'm not really a tequila fan either...would never even considering doing tequila shots. But add some sweet fruit juice (strawberry, raspberry, mango etc.) or even avocado apparently , and I'm all for it! :thumbsup2

Isn't it great the things you learn here on the DIS? I probably would have walked by this place a thousand times without ever venturing inside had I not read about it here. I hope you enjoy it! :thumbsup2

Lunch at LE CELLIER

IMG_4979.jpg

SHORT VERSION

Highlights – Food (especially the Walnut-Crusted Salmon)

Disappointments – Service, Walnut-Crusted Salmon no longer on menu

Would we return? – Yes

LONG VERSION

First some background regarding our previous experience with Le Cellier. We have dined here many times (almost every trip)... a few times for dinner, but mostly for lunch. We have had some excellent meals here, and we’ve had some mediocre meals as well. On our two most recent visits, we had one of each. On our family trip in March 2010, three out of the five of us ordered steak when we dined here for lunch and all came away feeling somewhat disappointed. Our steaks were all fine, just not great…definitely not the best we have had at Disney World. In fact, they weren’t even the best we had on that trip. :sad2: This, along with the fact that our server seemed somewhat odd (the kids referred to him as a “creeper”), as he was always lurking very close to our table throughout our meal. This may have had to do with the fact that three of the five of us dining were cute girls (ages 16 – 20) and he was a young guy. :lmao: Anyway for our 25th Anniversary trip last November, I wasn’t really planning to include Le Cellier in our dining plans. But then one day (not long before our trip) when I was playing around on the Disney Dining online reservation system, to my surprise a lunch reservation at Le Cellier came up as an option at Epcot. So I couldn’t resist the urge and went ahead and grabbed it. And I am so glad that I did because it turned out to be one of our best lunches of that trip. :thumbsup2 However, I must add here that even though we were on the Dining Plan, we resisted the temptation to order a steak and instead ordered…a burger. I know, I know…who goes to a steakhouse (especially on the Dining Plan) and orders a burger? Well, we did and I’m happy to say that we did not regret our decision. The Le Cellier House Burger with roasted mushrooms, pancetta, maple barbecue, Black Diamond Cheddar, and crispy onions was delicious. The rest of our food (cheddar cheese soup and chocolate whiskey cake) was equally delicious and our server this time around was great. Therefore, when the opportunity arose to have lunch here on this trip, I said to myself, “Sure, why not?”

Ok, now getting back to where I left off with this review. There was a short line at the outside podium for Le Cellier, which we joined to check in for our late lunch. Most of the people in front of us did not have a reservation though, so were turned away. But since we did have a reservation, we were greeted with a smile by the CMs working at the podium and given a pager. We decided to wait outside the restaurant and enjoy the beautiful landscaping there.

IMG_4983.jpg

Our pager went off about 10 minutes later (much shorter than our previous wait times at Le Cellier) and we went inside to be seated. Our table was small (a 2-top) wedged tightly between another 2-top and a 4-top, so not the best location. On our way to the table, our hostess stopped at their dessert display to show and tell us about the desserts. I was very happy to see that they still had the Chocolate Whiskey Cake! :thumbsup2

Our friendly server soon came to introduce herself and take our drink orders. Since DD had just had two margaritas at La Cava (she drank all but one sip of the complimentary one we received) she declined my suggestion to have a cocktail and stuck with a glass of water. However, knowing that this was our last day and we had not yet had a drink from Canada (for our Drinking & Eating Around the World Game), I decided to take one for the team and order this…

IMG_4988.jpg

Torontopolitan

This cocktail was a tasty combination of Iceberg Vodka and Chambord (a black raspberry liqueur), plus cranberry and orange juices (for $9.50). Now, technically this was not listed on their cocktail menu, but I had heard about it on the Party Through the Parks website so asked if it might still be available.

Next we each ordered a cup of their signature Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup made with Moosehead beer and bacon. This was delicious as usual!

LeCellier.jpg

Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup

And we of course couldn’t resist dunking our pretzel breadsticks into our soup.

IMG_4987.jpg

Oddly though, after dropping off our soup and breadsticks this was the last we saw of our friendly server until it was time for us to pay our bill. :confused3 Before we even had a chance to finish our cups of soup (and trust me…we were not dawdling, as we both loved the soup ;)), another server came with our shared entrée and extra plate. Being that we were at a small table there really wasn’t any room for these, so she tried to take away our soup cups before we were done with them. We of course refused to let them go, so we somehow found a way to squeeze the plates onto our already crowded table.

So that was the bad…now for the good. DD had thoughts of sharing the filet for our entrée, but I reminded her how small the filet is that is served at lunch (too small for sharing). As for me, I probably would have just ordered the burger again, but DD doesn’t like hamburgers so that was out. But then we saw something on the menu that sounded great to both of us...Walnut-Crusted Salmon with a whiskey-maple glaze, served with sweet corn and pickled mushrooms. This turned out to be an absolute winner!!! The best salmon dish I've ever had...even better than the salmon I had at Artist Point on our last trip (and that was really, really good!!!)

IMG_4992.jpg

Walnut-Crusted Salmon

Being a lover of mashed potatoes, DD asked if we could also share a side order of cream cheese mashed potatoes. These were quite delicious as well.

IMG_4993.jpg

Side Order of Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes

IMG_3995.jpg

Chocolate Whiskey Cake (from last visit)

So I had really wanted to again have the Chocolate Whiskey Cake, something I had discovered here last time and was one of my favorite desserts from that trip. I thought that since we had shared an entrée we would have room for it. But DD absolutely refused to eat even a bite of dessert, so I knew I would end up eating the whole thing myself and being miserable. Although I planned to decline dessert when offered, I secretly hoped that they would bring me a piece anyway as a birthday surprise. Well, the only surprise that I got was the return of our long-lost server with our check in hand. Not only was there no birthday cake offered, but she didn’t even ask us if we wanted to order dessert. I got the feeling they were in a rush to get us out the door so they could clean and set up our table for dinner. What do you think? ;)

And speaking of that, as we were eating they were resetting the tables around us (as people left) with the fancier place setting for their Signature dinner.

IMG_5001.jpg

I have one last picture for you, something you don't see too often...an empty Le Cellier restaurant! We were one of the last lunch diners (I recall seeing maybe three other tables of diners seated around the corner) to leave.

IMG_5000-1.jpg

This was as we were walking out at 3:40…less than one hour from the time we walked in the door. So this was not exactly a "Relax, Take your time, and Savor every bite" kind of meal. But even though our service felt rather rushed and our server went MIA for quite awhile, these issues didn’t prevent us from thoroughly enjoying every bite of our food. :cloud9:

I have one more tidbit of information to add here. Sadly, since our visit in May, Le Cellier has come out with a new lunch menu and the Walnut-Crusted Salmon is gone. :scared1: Salmon is still offered on the new menu but it is now prepared differently… Pan-roasted Salmon with Summer Beans, Roasted Tomatoes, Pickled Onions, and Applewood-smoked Bacon Vinaigrette. This doesn’t sound nearly as appealing to me, so I’m hoping this is just a temporary change (perhaps for the summer?) and our much loved Walnut-Crusted Salmon will someday return.

And so I can calculate my total savings with Tables in Wonderland…

As we exited Le Cellier, we could hear our favorite Disney World band playing, Off Kilter. We stopped to listen to the remainder of their set. Unfortunately, one of my favorite band members, Jamie Holton (bag piper and singer), was off for the day. Although they still sounded great, they weren’t quite as good as they are with Jamie. ;)

Since we had missed most of their show, we decided to come back in an hour or so to get seats for their next show. In the meantime though, we needed to visit two remaining countries to fulfill our challenge to Drink (& Eat) Around the World. The first of these last two countries was the United States, where we got this from the Fife and Drum…

IMG_5002.jpg

Sutter Home Chardonnay

We both agreed that this wine was not worth the $7.41 ($6.95 plus tax) that we paid for it. If I ever do this game again, I will try one of the other Sutter Home wines here (I think they also sell Pinot Grigio and Merlot) or perhaps a beer (Bud Light or Sam Adams). But on the bright side...at least we got our game points. :thumbsup2

Points earned – 10

And that just leaves one more country. Does anyone know which of the World Showcase countries we had not yet visited???

If you said “CHINA”, then you would be absolutely correct. :thumbsup2 So we made a stop at the China Joy of Tea Cart (conveniently located along the lagoon) to have our final drink of the game. We chose the very tasty Peach Snap for $7.99 ($7.50 plus tax).

IMG_4973.jpg

Peach Snap

This was a combination of peach schnapps and oolong tea in a refreshing slushy. We were tempted by the egg rolls which they also sell here, but decided we were still too full. Hopefully next time.

Points earned - 10

Now a few of you may have noticed that we skipped the African Outpost. Although there are some who count this as a World Showcase country, we do not. So with it being excluded, we Conquered the World by Drinking (and in most cases, Eating) in every country of World Showcase. This earned us these Bonus Points. :thumbsup2

Conquered the World! Drink or Food or Ride in EVERY country.......30 pts

I’ve heard though that the amount of liqueur you receive in your coffee varies greatly here, since the servers free pour these (no measurements). Apparently our server was feeling quite generous, as our Casablanca coffee was strong enough to grow hair on your chest. :lmao:

Featuring Off Kilter (Our Favorite Live Entertainment at Disney World)

POINTS RECAP:

Shared Lunch at Le Cellier – 25 points
Torontopolitan Cocktail from Le Cellier – 10 points
Off Kilter Performance – 10 points

TOTALS: 45 Points Earned, OOP Cost $48.98

Note: Not only is Canada home to our favorite Disney World band, but also the restaurant which served our favorite non-Signature meal of this trip. Although for us, Le Cellier is a very “hit or miss” kind of restaurant, this visit was a definite hit…well, at least food-wise. Unfortunately, the service this time was not. :sad2:

GAME TOTALS

Points Earned – 365 + 30 Bonus Points for Conquering the World (197.5 points each)

OOP Costs - $254.29 ($127.15 per person)

4 Deluxe Dining Plan Credits Used – Value $177.70

9 Snack Credits Used – Approx. Value $32.25

So as you can see, this is not an inexpensive game to play. It helps if you are on the Dining Plan and can use credits for meals and snacks, but of course that doesn’t help with any of the alcoholic beverages. However, though it was not the cheapest way to pass the time at Epcot, we have no regrets because IT SURE WAS FUN! :cool1:

Just one last thing…How did we rank???

Explorer World Ranking

Gypsy 39 or less pts
Viking 40 - 119
Plunderer 120 - 199
Conquistador 200 or more

With 197.5 points each we are…PLUNDERERS! Wow, just a few points away from being top-ranking CONQUISTADORS. I guess we should have gotten that egg roll in China after all.

NEXT UP: Dinner at Citricos

I have throughly enjoyed my Sunday of Labor Day weekend sitting inside and reading your review. It reminds me of my trip with my dd this summer for her 21st. We (along with some friends) drank around the world in about 4 hours with an additional hour at the Beirgarten for dinner. We then hightailed it over to PO Riverside to spend the evening with YeeHaw Bob, so fun!

I really appreciate your analysis of the DDP vs OOP and TIW. My question is this. Even though you ended saving a significant amount of money, would you have ordered that much if you were OOP and just for comparison sake didn't have a budget? In other words did you eat much more than you would have just because you could and if the answer is yes, would you still have saved money if you only ordered what you really wanted. I ask because we did the DDP and I know I ate much more than I would have otherwise. I just wonder if I will do it again.

Maybe I should have asked this on the Dining Plan forum, sorry

Thx popcorn::
