Maybe if you call ahead and add a note to your reservation? You could always sub in a completely different side. I was disappointed with the horseradish potatoes because there wasn't ENOUGH horseradish in them. I barely tasted it.

Agreed. I could taste it slightly, but they really just tasted like ordinary mashed potatoes. I wanted more kick.

I don't think calling ahead is either a reasonable suggestion or something that you can do. It is a restaurant and this is what they offer. If you don't like it, order something different.
You can always ask, but don't be upset if they can not accomodate you.

While what you say about ordering something different is generally true, restaurants are quite used to people asking questions and making special requests. If they can help you, they will. But it is not always possible.

In the case of horseradish mash, it might come down to nothing more complicated than the kitchen stirring in horseradish at the last moment before service, at which point an order can be made deleting that step. Or maybe the horseradish is steeped in the milk/cream before the liquid is added to the cooked potatoes such that eliminating the horseradish is impossible unless a batch of mashed potatoes is made from scratch. Or maybe Coral Reef uses instant potato flakes such that making a batch to order would take all of two minutes.

In the end, I don't think that calling ahead is warranted. Besides, the inability to contact restaurants directly makes this tough. If the request can be accommodated, then the kitchen should be able to do it between the time you are handed your menu and the time you are served. Just ask the question at the earliest opportunity to give the kitchen time to adjust. If the adjustment cannot be made in that interval, then it is probably a request that should be dropped. Outside of allergy issues and celebratory cakes, restaurants should not have to work days in advance to tweak its recipes for diners. Last minute changes are fine, though.

Funny. I had no idea they had horseradish in them. I ate half of my sons and they tasted like reg mashed to me.
