A few months ago, my immediate family decided to go back to WDW. We suggested to MIL and FIL that they should go too. We pay for ourselves, they pay for themselves. I told MIL to sign up for disney emails/ the DVD and that she might get discounts. She got a pin code for the free dining plan!
They booked a room and we used their discount to book a room for us and some friends (3 rooms total, the max for one code). We are traveling in October.

Tonight she calls me and tells me they changed their reservation and that they are leaving 3 days early. I got upset because 1. she didn't tell me beforehand and I tell her EVERYTHING I do / change/ idea I have about the trip and 2. I was (am) afraid that since we are on her reservation we all have to travel on the same time. The discussion got very heated between her and DH (I don't know why) and she said she was going to cancel.

If she cancels or changes her reservation does it affect ours? One of our reservations is paid in full, the other isn't. Does that make a difference?

THANK YOU FOR READING!! AND I APPRECIATE THE ADVICE ANYONE CAN GIVE!!

You can only use her pin code if she is going to WDW at the same time. You shouldn't have a problems if you check-in a few days later, but you'll have a huge problem (as in no pin code) if she cancels her reservation. I hope everything turns out okay because it sounds like there will be a lot of disappointment if things can't be mended.

I'd be so happy if my in-laws were not going to travel with me that I would pay double for the dining plan.

If the code was good for a certain number of rooms/people, shouldn't they have to honor it if there are still rooms booked with the pin? I'd just call Disney and ask what happens in a situation like that. It can't be the first time a group has booked a trip and one of the parties had to cancel out. No sense not knowing exactly what happens, and stressing yourself about it.

Thank you to everyone who responded last night or this morning! :worship:I was very worried about what would happen and of course, she sprung this news on me after reservations were closed so I couldn't call and ask.

I just got off the phone and they told me it didn't matter when or even if she travelled, our reservation stayed in tact. They also told me that they quite often have issues with family / friends etc cancelling each other's reservations out of spite. (All night I worried that she might cancel our reservation, she was that upset last night - for no reason). The agent told me to change all address, phone number, and zip code on my reservation. If she doesn't know what the reservation is booked under, she can't mess with it!! Like I said, this has happened before according to Disney reps.

Once again, thank you for your help! Everything seems to be working out okay.

Glad the CM you talked to you gave you good advice- hope you took them up on it - changing address, phone etc

I had a friend that someone went in and changed all their dining adr's because of spite - they knew each other's phone numbers! They also messed with their resort reservation, but my friend was able to get a handle on that before they left! How awful...

Why can't she just make a separate reservation for the first 3 days??

Also, changing all your reservation information so that your MOTHER won't cancel your reservation seems excessive to me. I would worry more that this would negate the discount than that she would cancel on me. In addition, I am not sure I would want to travel with someone whom I was afraid would call up and cancel my reservation out of spite.

Her MIL (along with most people) prob wouldn't want to make a separate reservation b/c she wouldn't have free dining on both of her resort reservations w/o buying separate tickets for both. Plus, it's not guaranteed that you will stay in the same room. That would be really inconvenient & unnecessarily costly.

I don't think she was overreacting at all. People do irrational things when they're upset & we don't know exactly what as said between her DH & MIL. The CM is the one that suggested it b/c he's probably experienced it before. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

OP, I'm so happy that you talked to a helpful CM. Have a great trip! :goodvibes

After I read the responses this morning, I called back just to make sure the information I was given was correct. It turns out it wasn't exactly right. Normally, the pin code holder has to travel at the same time to use their pin code. However, because we are paid in full and booked awhile ago the guest services rep (step up from reservation agent) said she would put a note on my account that we would not lose our discount if the ticket holder cancelled. I don't think this is the normal procedure, but she made it very clear that Disney knows stuff happens and will not intentionally do stuff to ruin vacations if they can avoid it and will make special arrangements for extenuating circumtances.

Also, my MIL called sooner after I talked to WDW for the second time and they changed their reservation back. As of right now, everything is good. Planning vacations for 3 groups of people (2 who have never been) is very hard!!

Less than 90 days to go!!!

Wow! Hope things stay friendly for the next 90 days! Glad it seems to be working out. Have a great trip!:wizard:
