Re-using Resort Mugs: The end is near

Wont affect us, always stick to getting a new one each stay

I think most of the UK guests do anyway as we stay long enough that it really pays itself off - in dividends, even if buying the mug out of pocket. One of the effects of this new system, if they decide to roll it out, is that it will stop those buying a soda from refilling it (you know how you get given a paper cup and go help yourself?) I can't find which source had written some detail on how that would work so I dare not say anything before checking in case I give wrong/half info and confuse the issue.

Totally out of order, I will miss the threads, next they will be solving the tipping issues:rotfl2:

Don't worry Wayne. Why don't you grab a nice drink and start one on pool hopping :lmao:

Or you could do one on the cut off age for kids in strollers, toddlers on a leish, saving places for your family of 8 in line while they ride something else ....

It's always amazing though, the above are hot topics which usually end on page 67 within an hour, with a padlock at the end and lots of these popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:: appearing as the sum total of numerous posts over the course of the thread. Yet post the same question on the UK forum and we have a relatively civil and interesting discussion about it. :goodvibes

I think its called dramatism lee. We always buy new mugs and to be honest i hv seen like we all hv people using all sorts of mugs flasks etc. I wouldnt hv the nerve. After the monorail thread it looks like disney are trying anything to save money.

what will happen to our mugs bought in the days when they were lifetime refill mugs?

That is an interesting question - because the lifetime ones are honoured as such. I haven't looked at the main thread on this since the night before last but I am sure someone has touched on it (if you care to go through a few hundred posts :headache:)

It is funny: I can quite see why this could and should irritate people. Especially those who have paid for their own mugs and see people "cheating" But I really couldn't give a hoot who uses what to dispense their drink into. You can fill up your wellies and take a swig for all I care. I am on holiday and it would have to be something pretty spectacular to make me pay attention to what kind of cup someone is using

I'm not thrilled about that idea because when you start introducing more technology it always seems to slow things down, I can just see big queues because peoples cups won't let them fill up :headache:

We always buy new mugs but we do also take a couple of old ones and fill those up as well. If the drink dispenser is far away its just easier to fill up 4 mugs than keep going back.

Well they are doing a trial at a busy foodcourt, so hopefully all the creases will be ironed out before they roll out the new system (if they do so). I watched the video clip in the link and it didn't appear to take any longer. It just looks like it activates the dispenser in a different way but functions the same. I would imagine though that you would need currently purchased resort mugs which are chip/barcode enabled, which the current ones are obviously not so I can see where you are coming from.

Don't forget to head over to the cruise boards and start one about dress etiquette! That normally gets some heated discussion! :rotfl:

The 5 minute thing is really annoying. What if I get a warm or flat soda (it happens all the time), surely I cannot be expected to wait 5 mins just to see if I can get a drink that isn't warm or flat? What if I am really thirsty and want to get one and drink it fast and then top up? If that is the case, I won't be buying a mug on DVC trips (will only get it if free) and will buy cans/bottles from Walmart.

I wonder what will happen for split stays. We're staying in 3 different resorts over Christmas and I know the mantra is that the mug is good for the resort at which it is purchased but in reality, we never buy a new mug each time we move - to us it's one continuous resort stay. If we're expected to buy new mugs each time we change resorts, we certainly won't be bothering - $15 over the course of 2 weeks is good value but not close to $45!
Time will tell - questions, questions... ;)

Wouldn't this be something similar to what they do in the water parks? I always thought those mugs were date bar coded so could only be used that day? You have to scan those before the drinks machine will work.

If I worked for Disney, from a business point of view, I would say this is a good idea - all those extra soda's people take, that are not supposed to, do add up. We're talking 100's if not 1000's per day over the resorts - someone has to pay and I'd rather Disney didn't pass the costs onto me. :thumbsup2

Regardless of what they do somebody will work out a way to get round it but hey I'm on holiday who cares........

According to this article on MouseSteps the trail hasn't actually started yet!

I am undecided whether I care or not!

We do use the same mugs more than one trip  as they live in our owners locker now however I always have the current design - I wouldn't use an old design.

If it does roll out property wide I will just take advantage of the rules open to DVC members and get a Dp for one night at the start of the trip and get the mugs included in that :rolleyes1

when we have done split stays have been told by Disney that one mug is valid for all parts of it.
Then again nowadays we get sodas from hess or supermarket as we know that its not flat and as have fridge inroom it will be cold
Now if they did a beer mug like at backyard BBQ:thumbsup2

I hope so Paul, although I'm sure it'll take a while for the full policy to become clear. You're right, a beer mug would be a great idea ;)
