Greetings From England – The Brits Are Back!! **COMPLETED 07/05**

Hey Linda, I have to say that the cinnamon roll looks a little dry. Was it? I am not a fan of pecans so I hope Roaring Fork has normal cinnamon rolls too (I can't remember) :confused3

I am probably alone in that the tuna pita looks awful to me - but I absolutely abhor tuna

I've never had a corn dog - I've had cornbread though, is it anything like that?

Hi Joh :goodvibes
The cinnamon roll was certainly not dry, it was really moist and fresh
I am fairly sure that RF sold regular cinnamon rolls as well :thumbsup2
As for the corn dog, I didn't try any but DH described it as 'sickly' once he got about half way through so I guess that's because it was a little too sweet
:confused3
He used to think corn bread was too sweet but loves it now
Stay tuned for Jiko :)

That tuna pitta sure looks good!

Yay on DH getting a free corn dog - it's a shame he didn't enjoy it but at least he did not pay anything for it!

Ooh sorry I missed your reply
Isn't it funny how if something is free it suddenly doesn't taste quite so bad

I'm really enjoying your review. I've been trying to decide between the pork sandwich and the cheese sandwich at Captain Cook's.

You haven't made my decision any easier! :)

I think I will order both for DH and me. That way we can try each other's meal.

Absolutly loving your reviews! Your photo made me decide that I must have one of those avocado margaritas on my upcoming trip! Maybe more than one actually  Can't wait to read the rest of your reviews!

Wednesday 25th May 2011 Continued

After a wonderful day at Animal Kingdom we headed back to the Wilderness Lodge to relax and freshen up ahead of our dinner reservation at Jiko

As always, we headed over to the Resort well ahead of our ADR time so that we could explore and have a pre-dinner drink

I picked this up from the Lodge’s pool bar

IMG_4643.jpg

Caribbean Limeade - Skyy infusions pineapple vodka, midori melon liqueur, and simply limeade

After enjoying our drinks and checking out the animals on the Savannah we headed to Jiko to check in and were seated pretty much right away

We were taken to a lovely table in the restaurant’s 'Wine Room'

I thought that this was a really great area to sit, it felt very intimate and perfect for a romantic dinner

The ‘walls’ of the room are actually iron Wine racks with the bottles of wine providing a circular divide between this area and the main dining room

Our server for tonight was Kim and she was just wonderful, another great server who was more than happy to discuss the menu and wine pairings with us

I didn’t make a note of the wine that I ordered tonight (I think it was a Sauvignon Blanc) but I do remember commenting on how good it was.

The wine list here is really impressive and Kim was certainly very knowledgeable about it

As we read through the menu we were served some wonderful fresh bread

Bread Service

There were several items on the menu that we wanted to try and it’s also worth noting that there is also a vegetarian menu with some unusual and creative dishes available :thumbsup2

I had heard some great things about the Flatbreads here so decided to start my evening off with this:

IMG_4646.jpg

Wood-fired Flatbread – Roasted Mushrooms with Pleasant Ridge Reserve, Masala Curry, Crispy Fennel and Ice Wine Gastrique

This was simply delicious!

Every ingredient worked perfectly together and it was just packed with flavour

Here is DH’s choice

IMG_4647.jpg

Jiko Artisanal Cheese Selection
Mount Tam – US (Cow)
Pleasant Ridge Reserve-US (Cow)
Bijou-US (Goat)
Fromage d’Affinois de Brebis-France (Sheep)
Cashel Blue – Ireland (Cow)

Another huge hit; you are given a printed card with this dish that details everything you could possibly want to know about each individual cheese and DH really, really enjoyed every one.

So we were on a roll with our appetisers and were excited to see if our entrees would be as good

I was torn between a couple of options but took Kim’s recommendation and ordered this:

IMG_4648.jpg

Seared Lake Victoria African Perch “Kushari” with toasted Pearl Couscous, Lentils, Fresh Chickpeas, Almonds, Tomato Sauce, Sweet Corn Cream, Crispy Onions and Harissa Vinaigrette

This was sensational :cloud9:

You can see from the description that there is an awful lot going on in this dish but every single element complimented the next

Without any doubt whatsoever this was my favourite entrée of our vacation so far.

The fish was perfectly cooked and I would highly recommend this dish to anyone who enjoys seafood; I thanked Kim profusely for recommending it to me :thumbsup2

Here is DH’s entrée

IMG_4649.jpg

Braised Short Rib with Truffled Potato Puree, Pearl Onions, Baby Carrots, Cabernet-Tamarind Sauce

DH cleared his plate in no time at all; he really enjoyed this entrée but he did say that the meat was a little fattier than he expected and that he enjoyed his steak at Yachtsman more but even so he was very pleased with this dish

Onto desserts and we decided to order two that we would both enjoy so that we could share

IMG_4650.jpg

Cheesecake, Caramel and Toffee – Creamy Madagascar Vanilla Cheesecake with Salted Caramel, Macadamia-Almond Toffee, Whipped Cream and Chocolate-covered Coffee Beans

Oh sweet heaven above this was just amazing; it was the best cheesecake I have ever eaten, no kidding :woohoo:

I was not happy that I had to give DH half :sad2:……….. but ……….. I got half of this ….....

IMG_4652.jpg

Coconut Bread Pudding, Warm Bread Pudding with Caramel-Rum Sauce, Toasted Coconut and Caramel Ice Cream

OK, everything about this dessert was fabulous but the Caramel Ice Cream was off the scale good :lovestruc

Just before we settled out bill, Kim bought out ‘A Kiss Goodnight’; a lovely touch

IMG_4653.jpg

So the verdict on Jiko? ……………….. Simply Stunning

From start to finish this was a wonderful meal in a beautiful setting with excellent service and superb food

Can you tell we enjoyed it?

Coming Up Next ………….. Ciao Bella; We Are Heading To Via Napoli

I'm really enjoying your review. I've been trying to decide between the pork sandwich and the cheese sandwich at Captain Cook's.

You haven't made my decision any easier! :)

I think I will order both for DH and me. That way we can try each other's meal.

Tough choice, great idea to share though, you'll get the best of both worlds :thumbsup2

Looking forward to it - did you have the flatbread to start?

Sure did and boy was it good :cloud9:

Absolutly loving your reviews! Your photo made me decide that I must have one of those avocado margaritas on my upcoming trip! Maybe more than one actually  Can't wait to read the rest of your reviews!

When we are back in Epcot in October I am heading straight for another avocada margarita

Ooh! Looking forward to hearing about Jiko :surfweb:

Hi Shari, just posted it :thumbsup2

Nice reviews! Looking forward to the rest! :goodvibes

Thanks for reading, plenty more to come :goodvibes

Our last two visits to Jiko were very disappointing.

After reading your review, I think we'll give it another try. Thanks.

Kathy

Well, I read the review at work (as promised) and it sounded great. Got home, looked at the pictures and it looked even better :thumbsup2

What's next?

So happy you enjoyed Jiko! I really wanted to get that perch dish but couldn't fit it in since we did Yachtsman instead. Hopefully they still have it next time!

Mmm your review of Jiko sounds great! :thumbsup2

Am glad you enjoyed your meal - all the pics look good and your review of the cheesecake has me drooling! :rotfl:

Hi Linda!:)

Sooooo glad you loved Jiko!

It was our favourite meal of the whole holiday last year! Our definite top of the list to return to!

Can't wait to hear more!

We stayed at AKL a few weeks ago and every time I walked by Jiko on my way to the pool I would stop and smell, it just smelled wonderful. Never had a chance to try it though, maybe next time because it sounds awesome.

Oh it's a shame you have had some disappointing meals at Jiko; this was our first time eating there but it really was excellent from start to finish :thumbsup2

What's next?

Hey Joh :goodvibes
Via Napoli next :thumbsup2

I can't believe I agreed to my family crossing Jiko off our list for october - it looks amazing

All the more reason to start planning another trip :cool1:

So happy you enjoyed Jiko! I really wanted to get that perch dish but couldn't fit it in since we did Yachtsman instead. Hopefully they still have it next time!

The Perch was outstanding :cloud9:
I would find it very difficult to order anything else if it's still on the menu next time we visit

Mmm your review of Jiko sounds great! :thumbsup2

The cheesecake was soooooooooooo creamy and delicious :lovestruc

Hi Shari :goodvibes

When I first made the ADR I wasn't sure if DH would find the menu as interesting as me but we both ended up loving this meal :cloud9:

Oh you must try it next time, if only for the Flatbreads :thumbsup2

Thursday 26th May 2011

Today was a great day :thumbsup2

We were booked onto the ‘Around The World On A Segway Tour’ at 7.45am and although the early morning wakeup call was painful it was sooooo worth it

It turned out that we were the only two people booked on the tour (there were 13 people on the later tour :scared1:) so we were escorted into a totally empty Epcot, ahead of all the breakfast guests and were treated like VIPs!!

This is such a fun tour by the way, zooming around an empty world showcase was a wonderful experience and our guide was excellent

IMG_4669.jpg

IMG_4670.jpg

Don't we look cool

After our tour ended we grabbed FPs for Soarin’ and then spent the morning enjoying Future World

On our way to our lunch ADR we found time to stop off in Mexico for a little pick me up

DH grabbed a Coke and I picked up one of these from La Cantina San Angel

IMG_4675.jpg

Mixed Berry Margarita

Whilst standing in ‘Mexico’ with my delicious drink in hand the Margarita Gods smiled down on me and right on cue the entertainment began

IMG_4679.jpg

Can you spot the new band member :cool1:

After our musical interlude it was time to skip through passport control and head over to Italy for our lunch ADR at Via Napoli

We checked in and were seated within a couple of minutes; there were a lot of people arriving without ADRs and the restaurant seemed to be able to accommodate them all and there seemed to be plenty of empty tables inside

Our table for lunch was a lovely two top in the window; we were really lucky with our table allocations on this trip and always ended up with great views :goodvibes

Our server introduced himself and took our drink orders; Coke for DH and a Pomegranate Cosmopolitan for me

IMG_4683.jpg

Once our drinks were delivered our server took our appetiser and entrée orders before going AWOL for pretty much the rest of our lunch :confused3

An assistant server bought us bread and olive oil

IMG_4688.jpg

Bread Service

DH loves Calamari so decided to order some as an appetiser

I am really not a fan of Calamari but when it arrived I decided to try some

IMG_4687.jpg

Calamari Fritti - corn-crusted rings served with spicy tomato sauce

This was wonderful calamari, as I said I am really not keen on this usually (tough, chewy, you know the score) but this was great and not at all chewy, the tomato sauce was delicious and my only complaint would be that we would have liked to have more fresh lemon to squeeze over the dish but we couldn’t track down our server to help us

Whilst we were enjoying our Calamari there seemed to be confusion all around us as to which orders belonged to which table

Basically every table that our original server had attended to had a problem, with incorrect orders being delivered and everyone’s food being delivered at different times

The table next to us were really unhappy; half of them had finished their entrees before the others in their party had even received theirs :sad2:

I guess we got lucky as both of our entrees arrived at the same time

DH chose this;

IMG_4690.jpg

Quattro Formaggi - mozzarella, parmesan, fontina, provolone

And for me;

IMG_4689.jpg

Ortolano - tomato, mozzarella, vegetables

I loved my pizza, the base was perfect and the tomato sauce was delicious with the veggies

Top marks from me :thumbsup2

DH didn’t enjoy his as much as me; he regretted ordering this and wishes he had just got the Margarita Pizza which is his usual choice

He knew it was a 'White' pizza before he ordered it but he really missed the tomato sauce and felt that it was just too rich without the tomato flavour to cut through the cheese

It wasn’t a bad pizza by any means; it was more that he ordered badly

Shortly after we had finished our entrees our server re-appeared and ran round all of his tables apologising, I think he may have been spoken to by his manager

Next up was dessert and we both ordered the same thing

IMG_4692.jpg

‘Ugly But Good’ - Amarena cherry and vanilla gelato sundae with cookies

Oooh this was fab, wonderful vanilla ice cream and the cherry sauce was divine :cloud9:

Overall I really enjoyed Via Napoli but the service was nothing to write home about.

We weren’t in a rush but if we had expected a quick lunch we would have been disappointed

We would definitely return to Via Napoli and loved the setting and atmosphere of the restaurant; they were also offering Pizza by the slice from a window next to the main restaurant and I think that would be a great choice for a grab and go option

Coming Up Next ………………….A Night In Downtown Disney

I'm really enjoying your reviews! How cool to be the only ones in a tour. No wonder you felt like VIPs!

Yay on being the only two on the Segway tour - what a great way to start the day! :thumbsup2

The pizzas look yummy - it's a shame DH didn't enjoy his as much as he thought he would.

Mmm all these desserts look sooo good - can you tell I have a sweet tooth?! :rotfl:

Don't know how I'm going to cope with all the choices at Disney World!
