I-touch cracked screen :(

Anyone know how much it costs to replace an I-touch screen?? My DD-13 took it to school on the last day (without my permission!) and someone threw her bag with the I-touch in it and cracked the screen. :headache:

Do I even need a special tool to do this?

A friend fixed hers by watching videos on YouTube. Not sure how much the parts cost. She said it wasn't pretty after- had to leave it in a case to cover the seams.

Make an appointment with the Apple store nearest you, if it is less than 1 year old, it is very likely that it will be replaced for free. My nephew only had his for 3 weeks when he accidently broke it 2 days ago. Just today, they told Apple what happened and they replaced if for free. Hoping yours is a newer one.

Good luck!

ETA Be very careful doing repairs yourself!!! I would recommend against it.

My nephew also cracked his. The quote to repair it was $149. When the family said "too much, we'll just use as is and buy a new one when this one dies" they offered to replace it for free. Nice customer service on Apple's part!!!!

Now, I usually don't like to respond to these type of questions because many people run off and expect to get the same deal. I'm not sure what their criteria is on replace vs repair, but if you are nice about it, maybe yours will be replaced as well. If not, I'm sure it depends on the location and severity of the crack - my DDs friend paid $89 to have hers fixed - was not offered a free replacement.

Price varies depending on MB... 99-149. We too were lucky, went to the apple store... told the guy what happened....(tripped and fell with it).... he said so many people try to act like it is a defect, (like.. oh it just bumped the couch kind of thing)..... and he said, "since you told me the truth and you have been a good customer(we have only bought ipods, no other apple products)... I will do a one time replacement".... and he gave dd a new one. :cool1: this was just yesterday!! So definitely worth a trip to your local apple store. I couldn't believe it!

I also asked about the best protective cover(they had tons in the store) but he told me to get an otterbox.(not sold by apple) do a search on them, so I have two ordered for both of my dd's touch's.

My son cracked his old one and he had a screen protector on it, so it worked fine for a long time. Just a cracked screen. Well, until he left it in his pocket and I washed it. Then putting it in dry rice for several days didn't save it.

Next time...SquareTrade warranty. Best money I ever spent was to insure my son's iPhones. They cover everything including accidental dropping and water damage. If they can't fix it, they send you a check for the replacement value.

I also recommend going to the Apple store. DD11 cracked hers and they gave us a new one. The guy said he gets one exception a day and handed it to DH.

Good luck!

Have you ever actually made a claim? I've heard good things...and insured my ipad2 through Squaretrade. I'm just wondering if I'll be happy if I ever actually have to make a claim.

We bought our iTouches at Best Buy, we purchased the protection plan as well. DBF's was having issues, sent it off for repair, the new one has issues, so they replaced it for free. He had the 3rd Gen, now he has the 4th Gen. Those warranties work, well worth the price IMO. DD14 has it on hers as well, they are covered even if they get wet. I always recommend a warranty on things like this.

Good luck OP, we don't have an Apple Store around but if you do I would drop in and see what they tell you. :) You may get a new one!

I totally agree with the PP who mentioned the OtterBox - I LOVE IT!!!!! I have an iPhone and I can't tell you how many times I have dropped it and it still looks new and works great. My DD11 has been asking for an iTouch and I may get her one, and if I did, it would go right into an OtterBox and stay there forever!

Be careful with Best Buy and their protection plan. I bought the plan when I bought my husband a Garmin for running a few years ago. His Garmin stopped working so I took it back to Best Buy. They said, sorry, we don't have that anymore. WHAT??? After multiple phone calls, multiple visits to the store to talk to higher and higher ups, they eventually found one somewhere in the United States and gave us that one. And when I got it they asked me if I wanted to add the protection plan to that one, too. No way.

Not sure if it holds true anywhere else, but our Radio Shack up here repairs them for $50 or so.

The same thing happened to mine last month. I was getting ready to graduate from college so I was short on cash and there was no way that I was going to replace the screen and I did not want to buy a new one. Instead, I bought some screen protectors so that the pieces wouldn't fall out (heaven forbid...) :thumbsup2

My DD had her itouch (just got for Christmas) and her cell phone in her hoodie and they bumped together and cracked her itouch. Believe it or not, it still works but if I could get it fixed I would before it stops working. I'm going to try to take it to the apple store and see what they say. Thanks for the advice.:)

Take it back to apple they will likely replace it for free. The new phones are all glass (front and back) and they are having a ton of problems so they are getting use to it. If they will not replace your touch then just get a replacement glass off the web and change it yourself. There was a student at my High School that was changing them for $10 (glass included)... So it is not hard to do.

I cracked my iPhone last year. Googled cracked iPhone and found a guy half way across the country with good reviews that fixed them for $25. Put it in mail and back in three days with new glass. I kept the sim card and figured if I didn't get phone back it was broken anyway. He took credit card so safe on payment end also.
I was quite happy as Apple wanted a lot to fix and a new phone was very expensive. It is an iPhone 2 and still going strong.
