We are taking a family cruise in January - and I am looking for things to do to entertain DD, who will be 2 1/2. I want to make sure I take advantage of as many magical moments as I can.

What would be good highlights for a toddler?

Will have a 2 1/2 also on our first Cruise in March....Any suggestions would be great!!!!

I fifth that! I have a 2 1/2 year old and are doing our first cruise in 2 weeks! Any ideas would be GREAT!!

LOL I will 6th that ! My son will be 2 when we cruise but close enough :o)

before i give my opinion let me start off with saying....BUY GLOW STICKS/GLOW WANDS!
this kept our daughter entertained at nights, and she was the cutest toddler wearing her bracelets during the sail away party and the pirate party.
we went on our first cruise with our 18th month old daughter on 10/10. heres what we did and suggest you do too:
1) flounders reef (for children under 3 and not potty trained). our daughter is anti-social and hates being without us. for her to have not fussed the second and third time we took her there, says too much! the staff really caters to your childs needs, and keeps them happy the whole time! i was impressed! (i wanted to bring them home) we dropped her off for 2 hours when we arrived at castaway cay (the sun was hot for her skin) so we went snorkeling
2)Oceanears Club. eventhough you cant drop your child off, you can still go in with your child as "guests" to give them some extra running/climbing space.
3) live shows. i didnt think my daughter would sit still, she proved me wrong. she sat glued to the show with a huge smile on her face....she was so still i too was enjoying the show so much, i had forgotten she was on my lap!!
3)the wonder has a splash zone...we were there for over an hour and lost track of time. she was enjoying herself so much, how could we disturb her happy time? DONT FORGET YOUR SWIMWAYS!!!!
4)character greetings? NEED I SAY MORE?
5)tv screen. for lunch time i recommend sitting farther from the led screen, it tends to get loud. we sat our daughter facing the led screen so we can enjoy a quiet meal while we all ate. (we dont watch too much tv at home, she was glued)
6) movies. we only had time to watch a 3d movie (toy story 3d) our daughter wouldnt wear the glasses...but ended up falling asleep....i wouldnt recommend 3d movies
7) deck partys. we had so much fun! our daughter is such a dancer! i will say this: EVERYBODY will be at the pirate party, we assumed it too. we got there right after dinner (second sitting) so we could have the front row....big mistake..not only was it hot, but everybody behind us was pushing. i recommend going to the top if you have a toddler.its cooler, less packed, and you still have a good view.
8)dinner. prior to our cruise we requested sitting alone. our daughter tends to get too disruptive and distracted to eat. this worked out well. we had our own space.
9) in the Bahamas we did the Atlantis Tour. it was both entertaining yet stress free for the whole family...be prepared though...theres alot of walking!
10) castaway cay. we went on a bike ride (they have seats for babys to ride along). we also rented a floating mat. she loved laying on this while in the ocean. i almost forgot! the splash area here is much bigger than the one on the cruise... we used it to rinse off.

even down time was great. our daughter had so much fun during the day,all we had to do was lay her in her pack n play! she was out!..

i would recommend giving yourself "mommy and daddy time" your toddlers will have so much fun in the nursery they wont want to leave!

DONT FORGET:
a stroller, and swim ways. i saw parents depending on strollers at castaway there werent enough to go round, plus its best to have your own stroller for when you move around the ship. the stroller makes it all easier...also i noticed that swim ways were expensive onboard, i think 2 swimways a day should be enough (just incase)

hope this helps! let me know if you have any other questions

Thanks Nenis! Great advice. Hmmm....now where do I find glowsticks :-)

If you have a Michael's nearby, our has tubes of them in their dollar section. Wal-Mart usually has the sticks in their camping section all year round. :goodvibes

Wow - that 1 post said a MILLION! What fantastic suggestions. :thumbsup2 Our last cruise my DD was 2.5 - she was just in awe of everything. I second the glow sticks (usually can be found in any dollar store or even Target - Oriental Trading also has them on line).

I brought some little 'treats' and would leave them in the room when my DD was sleeping so when she'd wake up the next morning there would be something from someone - like Mickey left a pail and shovel for the beach at CC (very small set), Tinkerbell left an autograph book that was in the stateroom when we came back from the sail away party (DH left it there when he brought the life preservers back to the room - I went straight to the deck party with the kids to get a spot).

This is the best time for character meet and greets. They run almost all day. Check the Navigator for the times and plan accordingly. It is a much better experience than it is in the Parks. Plus they "change" outfits to correspond to the day (formal attire, beach, pirate..).

We felt guilty about putting DD3 in the Oceaneer Club. We originally planned just for Palo and a test run during the afternoon. She loved it and begged us to take her back then cried when we picked her up. She did not want to leave. I went in thinking it was a terrible thing to drop my child off and go to dinner, but I realized it was more than just a sitter. She truley had fun.

Just got back from the 10/16 Magic with our 2 1/2 year old.

She LOVED it.

She talks about swimming in Mickey (in the Mickey pool, she is about 95% potty trained so I felt OK taking her in there, I knew there wouldn't be any poop accidents). She loved the splash area/diaper zone too. And I can't say how much she loved the new splash zone on Castaway Cay. I literally had to rip her out of it when it was time to go back to the ship.

CHARACTERS. The best interactions were when the characters were just out walking around. She still expects Mickey or Donald to be there when she turns around.

SHOWS. My DD LOVED the music/dancing shows. We didn't miss one. The pirate party was great, we were on deck 10 and had great seats right next to the rail where I actually sat down with her on my lap until the fireworks started.

And finally, for us, we took an iPod touch loaded with movies and games to dinner. Our servers were AWESOME and "rushed" dinner for us, but the iPod kept her entertained for 80% of the meal. Yes, we're bad parents. But it was nice for those times when we didn't want her screaming or running around.

Nap times were very important to us as well. I highly recommend taking the time and making sure you get a nap in during the day. Enjoy it as downtime for yourselves as well, and read a good book or take a nap at the same time!

Oh, and she loved sliding at the Oceaneers Club. So I watched the Navigator and we'd go together when they had the slide open. It was a great chance for her to burn off excess energy.

I found the staff to be great, very inviting when we came in to play.

This is great to hear (read), thanks!

We'll be sailing with our boys when one turns 3 (the day after the cruise departs!) and the other will be 22 months. I'm glad to know it won't be an issue for me to take him in Oceaneers and let him play with his brother occasionally.

Flounders is a must! I felt bad leaving our daughter, then almost two there too, but then she had so much fun! She also really liked playing in the sand/water at Castaway Cay. She liked just wandering the decks too. She also enjoyed sitting in the lobby watching the elevators-go figure. The deck parties were a hit because of the dancing. Don't worry, the two year olds will have a ball. Do plan on an afternoon nap-it makes the late evenings better. Also, something I would do is put toddlers in Flounders so you can enjoy dinner or bring a portable dvd player to the dining room. It only took us 3 nights of our 4 night cruise to figure this out. You can either take kiddo to dinner with you, tell your server to bring his/her food ASAP and then one parent takes child to Flounders, or what I think works better is order room service at your convenience. What worked well for us on subsequent cruise was afternoon nap, then order room service, eat, a little TV and to Flounder's right before dinner. We didn't do this every night, but about half the time so we could enjoy dinner.

Glow sticks! What a great idea!

Quick question, what are swim ways?

My daughter turns 2 on the cruise to the Med this summer. Any good ideas for celebrating her birthday?
