Braces

My daughters were basic corrective braces and hers were $3500, yet my sons (18 months later) were more specialty as they included jaw movement and his were almost $9000 for 3-4 years of treatment. Both include the retainers.

There was another thread on here a while back discussing the costs, maybe you could find it thru a search.

We just figured all this out for my DS 14. He has too much space between his upper teeth and a slight overbite. The cost is $240 for the records appointment (molds of mouth, xrays, spacers) + $4500 for the braces (our insurance pays $2000, so only $2500 OOP) + $300 if he wants the clear braces on his upper teeth and of course he does. Total = $5040 ($3040 OOP).
Hope that helps.

What is the going rate for braces?

You don't want to know. :sad2:

$6300 for my DD, who just got them off last December (and I'm still paying for them until November).

That didn't include the spacer stuff that happened for two years before she got the braces (and that was somewhere around $1300, I think).

My DD15 started in braces last Dec. We shopped around! 1 place wanted to charge us $500.00 " sitting" fee and the price did not come off the bottom line. I say start with shopping around unless the the Dr you find will give you a discount for multiple kids?

Here is our cost: $6000.00 minus $250.00 sitting fee - $5750.00 minus $1000.00 from the insurance -$4750.00 minus the $1000.00 cash we put down up front ( we wanted too) -$3750.00 minus $2610.00 the last 18 month of payment - $1140.00 this is the best part!.... We got new insurance so they paid another $1000.00 so we only have $140.00 left to pay! :woohoo::woohoo:

My depend on your area of the country, but in general, regular top an bottom braces will run you between $5000 and $6000. More if there is something specific needed.

We paid $4000 for each of our two brace faces. Our insurance covered $2000.

Oh and my kids had clear top braces. My son's were for a crossbite in back, other than that his teeth looked good. Elizabeth has an overbite. They gave us an 18 month estimate for both of them, DS' braces are off, DD has about 9 months left.

'Roughly' $5,000....my daughters braces were about $5300, our out of pocket total was right under $1,000 (which included a $100 Sonicare toothbrush).

wow, I'm so glad i read this thread. My DD's dentist said she may not need any, but she has a gap in her front teeth. (she's ok with getting them). We are going to get an ortho dr's opinion of course I have been trying to figure out how much, and if i should stay in plan, or go out of plan for the orthodontist.

insurance covers $3,000 for life (ortho work..this does not cut into regular dental) if we stay with a DR in plan, it will be cheaper, out of plan covers 90%.

I think we will look at in plan DR's Thank you all for the input

I did braces as an adult, and paid over $6000 for braces, and over $2200 for extraction surgery and necessary checkups. This was a 7 years ago, so I bet it would be $2000 higher now, well over $10,000. I learned the hard way - sad to say in this day and age, you need that great smile to get a professional job. If you want to play the "game of life" here in the USA (a good job with retirement and medical benefits), you need that winning smile when you walk into that interview. My career went nowhere when I had crooked ugly teeth. Even after I got braces and was still in treatment, I aced the first interview I went on and finally started a career (in my mid 30's!).

Every kid needs their teeth straightened to achieve that winning smile and to get ahead later in life. Braces was the best thing I ever did. :)

Cost depends on the area of the country you live. 5000-6500 is average. But check around. You get what you pay for. I work in a dental office and have patients who get their braces off and their teeth are not straight or the bite is off. Get good recommendations don't just pick the cheapest place, because you might not be getting what you want.

I was shocked today when I heard the numbers for my oldest. $4900 for top and bottom braces for DS14. Last summer we started DD12 ($1800) with a palate expander and braces on the top front and DS9 ($2200) for the same and a lip bumper and bottom front. I was not prepared for the jump in price from a phase 1 (the middle kids) to a phase 2 (my oldest) full set of braces.

DS will be getting them soon. $5,300 for 18-24 month treatment (includes permanent retainer).

I agree with this 100%. It is sad but true. I think this falls under "first impressions".

We have a $1000 lifetime ortho benefit. They pay in increments. We were told that during this process, don't change jobs because we would be responsible for the remainder. I would suggest reading up on your insurance and making sure you know how it works. (I started researching it and called the HR director at hubby's work and asked if there was another level, to try and get a higher allowance and she swore up and down that we did not have an ortho benefit. )

My middle DS just had his braces put on in November. He will be in them from 18 months to two years--provided he does as the dentist asks, makes all appointments and wears his rubberbands. Cost $4100, before our dental allowance ($1000), this includes all dental visits, retainer and mouth protectors for sports. They did say that the clear uppers were the same cost as the metal ones, the gal did tell us that the metal ones were smoother and felt more comfortable than the clear ones.

Oldest needs them but refused to get them. He would only need to wear them for 12-18 months. I think it was about $1000 cheaper than the middle son's. He would need to have a wisdom tooth removed and the molar luxated though. We don't know if they would take both, I wonder if it would move the teeth leaving the one in. I just need to talk him into it. Hubby and I are talking about bribing him. (He has a turned molar caused by the wisdom and his upper front teeth sit on his lower teeth, it has already started grinding those lower teeth. They are smooth right now. If left untreated, he would be looking at a minimum of four root canals and crowns. )
