In your opinion...what does "No Overnight Parking" mean?

Nope, my mistake...it was a parking lot. :rolleyes:This is what I get for trying to process information at 1 AM. He talked to his law teacher today...he's SOL. Case closed, lesson learned. On to the next one! And please God, make it as trivial at this!

If it is dark, it is night. My kid would be paying and getting a lecture and possibly keys taken away for being lazy not to find a spot without a warning sign.:headache:

Seriously? That seems harsh. I think the financial difficulty imposed is punishment enough--this kid learned a lesson. And there is nothing in the facts to indicate the kid was lazy--he made a reasonable, but incorrect, assessment of what the sign said.

The sign should include the actual overnight hours parking. Like "no parking midnight to 5am, or something like that.

I don't think one should have to guess what the hours are.

I probably wouldn't fight the ticket though. $137 really isn't a ton of money. I'd just chalk it up to lesson learned.

I agree with this.

That seems a tad over the top. If he interpreted the sign differently, how was he being lazy?

To me "overnight parking" would mean all night.

"Night time" parking would mean any parking at all at night (after dark). And even that should ideally have specific hours.

I've seen places that have no curbside parking for specific hours of the day (e.g. rush hour), but they don't just say "No morning or afternoon parking". They're specific.

They should have a sign with the hours. To me it sounds like the parking lot owner and the tow truck company have a deal worked out.

If it was a public parking spot, I'd fight it. But if it's private (which it sounds like it was), then I'd just be mad and never park there again even in the daytime.

Why couldn't the sign simply say "No Parking at Night"? That seems so much more direct than what the sign says now.

:confused3 Or after business hours, or without a cashier there, or whatever. After I posted that it was on the street parking, I called DS at his senior breakfast LOL (got him out of the buffet line, apparently  ) and said "street or lot" so I'm not sure of any other details.

As I say to my kids "well, now ya know!"

The sign was unclear. Fight the ticket if anything, just to get them to clear up the sign. I bet they make a lot of money off of this. The sign should have hours posted, like no parking 12am-6am.

Too regional and seasonal a description. So winter parking hours are shorter than summer? You can park longer the closer you are to the equator?

What happens in regions where the sun barely sets??

I would think the sign was mostly meant to keep people from sleeping in their vehicle overnight (including RVs and such). If there are other places free to park.

If the street parking was paid parking, then I'd assume the parking lot was only for business of that lot. So once all the stores/offices are closed, there's no further parking.

Whoa! How charming!

If it is DARK, it IS night. Good job with that. That does not necessarily mean OVERNIGHT.

And honestly? How dare you call him "lazy" for interpreting the sign the way he did, when it is hardly clear cut. Save the hostility for your own lucky kids.

Well, living in New England and knowing our - my city's, anyway, winter parking ban, I would say having your car parked where you know nighttime parking is restricted, between midnight and 6 AM, means you violated the sign/law.

eta: I see the son was parked in a (presumably private) parking lot. All bets are off. 'Overnight' is whatever the owner of the lot says it is.

Can you follow simple instruction??? for many the answer is no!

Since we now know it's a parking lot, probably little if any of that $137 is for a ticket. The complex where I live has a huge problem with nonresidents using resident parking, so the contract with a local tow company. If you catch the towtruck after they hooked your car but before they started pulling it, there's a $90 charge. If you have to go pick it up, the total charge is about $150 - and there's no ticket, since it's private property.

Ok, whatever the $137 is for, whether it's a ticket or towing fee.
