14-night Eastbound Transatlantic Cruise (May 14-28, 2011) Lots of pics! COMPLETED 9/8

Lovin' it! Keep your report coming! Aren't you glad you were sailing away from those bugs?
Was that cheese plate from room service, or the one you pay extra for? It looks yummy!
Also, wondering about all those fun gifts you got - DVC and Castaway etc. How do you "sign up" to get lots of gifts:rolleyes:??

THANKS for doing this TR! We are sailing on the Magic in 2012 and reports like yours keep me going!

Yes! We were so glad to get away from all those lovebugs! Gross!

The cheese plate was the one purchased as a gift for my parents. I should have a picture of the cheese plate from room service soon...we got that a few times.

For the DVC gifts, they know if you're a member or not, so you automatically get them. For Castaway gifts, it depends on your number of cruises. If this is your 2nd-5th cruise, you receive the bag w/ all the goodies. For your 6th-10th cruises, you receive the additional gift (this time it was the luggage strap, passport holder thing, and the notecards).

DAY 2 - May 15th, 2011 - Castaway Cay (Part 1)

At about 6:30, the “natural” alarm clock went off. We heard the thrusters, which meant we must be ready to dock at Castaway Cay! We continued to sleep a little bit more before waking up again at about 7:45 thanks to a loud, screeching child in the room behind us. So, we decided to actually get up this time and start getting ready for our fun-filled day at Castaway Cay!

At 8:30, we were on our way to Topsider for breakfast with Mom and Dad.

file-37.jpg

At about 9:00, after we had enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast, we were getting off the ship! We took pictures with Daisy at the Post Office, and then continued along the path.

file-40.jpg

file-41.jpg

We walked all the way to the second tram stop (stopping for pictures with Minnie and then Pluto around Mount Rustmore), and then boarded a tram heading to Serenity Bay. By 9:30 we had arrived at our spot for the day on the beach at Serenity Bay!

file-42.jpg

file-43.jpg

We set up camp, put on lots of sunscreen, and began to relax! James and I brought our Kindles along, so we did some reading. By 10:45, we were drinking our first Konk Kooler! (For the price of $5.75...it used to be $5.50...)

file-44.jpg

After enjoying the glorious drink, we went into the water! It was cold at first, but it didn’t take long to get used to it. James and I made it ALL the way out to the sandbar before turning around and heading back.

At roughly 12:30, we decided it was time for lunch! So, we proceeded to the BBQ area to find a rather lengthy line. We grabbed some food and I decided to take a picture of the ship in the distance:

file-45.jpg

When it was time for dessert, James and I were REALLY hoping we would see the return of the cookie dough soft serve! Unfortunately, we were saddened to see that was not an option. However, we experienced a new choice: strawberry and banana!

file-46.jpg

By the time we were done eating, it was 1:00, and we returned to the beach for another hour or so.

file-47.jpg

file-48.jpg

file-49.jpg

At about 2:20, we decided it was time for us to head back to the ship.

file-51.jpg

We took the tram from Serenity Bay to the next stop, got off, and took some pictures before getting on the next tram all the way back to the ship.

DAY 2 - May 15th, 2011 - Castaway Cay (Part 2)

The whole journey from Serenity Bay to the ship only took us about 15 minutes! We got back on the ship, dropped off our things, and James and I did some exploring. Our first stop? The “secret” deck 7 aft verandah.

After that, we went down to Guest Services to get a new map and Navigator for Mom (as she was going to scrapbook this cruise). And, of course, I took more pictures of the area (including the dinner menu for tonight)!

At 3:30, we decided to head up to the top deck to watch the Sail Away Party (24 hours late, haha)! The party started at about 4:05, and we noticed we were sailing away from port at about 4:12. The characters hadn’t arrived to the party yet, either (they joined the party at about 4:25).

When the party ended, James and I went back to the room and played Phase 10 with Mom (while eating some of the cake from their room). At 5:30, we decided to order some room service! Within 10 minutes, our food had arrived (chicken wings, cheese plate, and fruit). About an hour later, we started to get ready for dinner (we skipped the show this evening: “Comedy and Hypnosis of Ricky Kalmon”). Also, as soon as we started getting ready, our shirts arrived all nicely pressed!

Once we were all ready, we decided to head downstairs. We browsed through the shops again, and I snapped some more pictures. (Notice A LOT of Med merchandise.)

DAY 2 - May 15th, 2011 - Castaway Cay (Part 4)

We sat outside the Walt Disney Theatre for a few minutes before heading over to Parrot Cay for our “Taste of the Caribbean” dinner. The doors promptly opened at 8:30, and off to our table we went!

file-105.jpg

file-106.jpg

file-107.jpg

We made our food selections, and shortly thereafter, food started to arrive! Our dining team definitely understood us and they seemed to just “know” that we didn’t like long, drawn out meals. Often times, we were on our entree while people were still on their first course! I know some people like a long, leisurely meal, but not us. Never once did it feel rushed, though. On average, we were out between 9:45 and 10:00 which was perfect. Anyway, time for some food pictures!

The meal wasn’t too bad! I didn’t post pictures of the soups, but we also had the chilled pineapple soup and the spiced seafood soup.

Next, it was DESSERT time!

At roughly 9:45, we were walking out of the restaurant.

file-118.jpg

But, as we were preparing to leave, there was some confusion with the time change issue. We informed her that we had to move clocks forward tonight one hour but she said that we didn’t have to. We walked out, and she came running after us (she found us in the aft elevator lobby), and told us she spoke to two different head servers that said there was to be NO time change tonight. So, I ran up to our stateroom to show her our evidence.

file-119.jpg

(See the card?) I ran back downstairs to show her and she was shocked! More miscommunication on this cruise! And she also felt bad, because she told the first seating there was no time change when, clearly, there was!

After getting all that sorted out, we went up to our rooms. We discussed our plans for the morning and initially decided on 9:00 to have breakfast. Mom and Dad were planning on going to the DVC Member Celebration, but then Mom noticed the scrapbooking event around the same time, so they decided to skip the DVC event. James and I also realized that meeting for breakfast at 9:00 would be a bit too early, considering the time change and the fact that we were about to leave to see a movie in the Buena Vista Theatre! So, we decided on 10:45 instead.

At 10:10, James and I went to the Buena Vista Theatre to see “I Am Number Four.” There were quite a few projection issues before the movie finally started. We heard the announcement for the emergency exit three times. There was no audio for the “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” preview. The screen said that 3D glasses would be needed (but it wasn’t true, unfortunately some people believed that and got up and got glasses). By the time the movie started, all the issues were sorted out. I regret to say that I feel asleep near the end of the movie (right at the climax with all the action...I don’t know how I slept through it!). But, I did enjoy what I saw prior! As we were leaving, I literally walked out of my flip flop and didn’t realize it. My foot had fallen asleep and I couldn’t feel a thing. James just stopped and said, “Uh, Kevin...want to get your shoe?” It was quite humorous (and it was a weird sensation, haha).

By 12:20, we were back in our room (well, I guess it was actually 1:20 at this point), so naturally we wanted to go right to bed. I was unsure if the wake up call would be at the correct, one-hour forward time, so we set the alarm on the portable clock we brought instead to be safe. And so we drifted off into a wonderful sleep, dreaming of our upcoming six days in a row at sea!

Ok, it would have been so difficult for me to leave behind the menu with Carmen Miranda Minnie on it! Love it! Your day at Castaway Cay sounds heavenly. How was the pineapple soup? When I saw that, I was definitely intrigued.

Very interested in hearing how the next few days go for you...all those at sea days!

For this cruise, I used a Nikon D3100.

I hope you don't mind if I ask you some camera questions . . . Are you using a flash for the indoor shots? Also, is there one lens that you used primarily, or did you switch lenses a lot? (I have not really mastered my DSLR but would like to get better by our cruise.)

And thanks for day two. Since it will be a long time before Disney offers another transatlantic, I am resigned to enjoying the trip through your report.

The pineapple soup wasn't too bad...definitely tasted pineapple-y! :)

Regarding using flash, I spent most of the cruise being lazy and leaving it on the "auto" setting, so if it went off, it went off, haha. However, when I was taking pictures of the dinner menus, I turned off the flash since the menu was behind glass.

Regarding lenses, I spent the majority of the cruise using the one that came with the camera when I bought it (the 18-55mm one). For when I wanted extra zoom, I switched to the additional one I bought (55-200mm). I used the 55-200mm lens for the Sail Away Party and the pictures of Castaway Cay from the "secret" deck 7 aft balcony. I also used it for some of the shows in the theatre and also some of the ports (I used it a lot in Gibraltar...both from the ship and also from the top of the Rock looking down on the ship). Hope this helps!

Keep the questions/comments coming! :) I feel like I might be missing things, so ask away if you have any questions or anything to comment on!

I am so glad you are writing a report for this cruise....I am going on the 15 night Hawaiian next year and am axious to read what people do on all those sea days! I don't think we will have a problem filling them, but it is going to be hard not knowing what days are what and having it all mapped out months beforehand like on the shorter cruises. Thanks again! p.s. I cant believe that the beach on cc looks almost empty in your pics from on top of the ship! I would have stayed every second that I could.....looks like the ship wasnt sold out, that must have been nice as well .....

whoo im loving your trippie, this is going to get me throught the summer till
our wbta in september.

:cheer2::yay::cheer2::yay::cheer2:

your pics of castaway cay are stunning, i can feel the heat:lovestruc

I absolutely love your photos of CC. I never tire of seeing photos of there.

Your reports are getting me even more excited as I am doing the WBTA - taking the Magic home.

I am looking forward to your next instalments.

Thank you for sharing.

Love your TR.

Do you remember the last name of your Danish server?

We're from Denmark and think it could be funny to request her if she is working the WBTA.

Christina

Thanks for posting so far, looking forward to reading the rest. Only 2 months until we are on the Magic!

Well, it actually wasn't that deserted. This was right around the "all aboard" time, so everyone was practically back on the ship. :)

I want to do the WBTA since I enjoyed this one so much! Hahaha...if only I had the time and money. And thanks for the photo compliments!

I'm sorry...I'm afraid I don't remember. I can't give her enough praise though! Phenomenal server.

Thanks for posting so far, looking forward to reading the rest. Only 2 months until we are on the Magic!

Thanks! I'm truly hoping to have the next installment up tomorrow!

My daughter and I were on this cruise. It was the best ever. Love getting to reminisce. Really enjoying your trip report!

DAY 3 - May 16th, 2011 - Day At Sea #1 (Part 1)

For whatever reason, we start waking up around 8:30 (kinda crazy considering we were up late for the movie...maybe we’re just too excited!). At about 9:30, we start getting ready, even though the alarm was set for 10:00. I call the wake-up call line since they also give the “current time” when you call. Surprisingly, it was the correct, one-hour forward time! So, I guess we’ll start utilizing this option since they appear to be on top of things. I also check the wave phones, and those have been adjusted appropriately.

At about 10:20, we start heading downstairs. As we turn to walk through Shutters, we see Mom coming out of Animator’s Palate! She was done with the scrapbooking event...what perfect timing! We head over to Lumiere’s for some brunch (mainly since our server, Marianne, would be serving). We requested to be seated in her section, and it was honored. She was so happy to see us!

file-121.jpg

I’m sorry to say I don’t recall what I had...I’m thinking I got french toast. I don’t really remember what anyone else had...silly me, I forgot to write it down. I know for dessert, the white chocolate and macadamia brownie pie was ordered by James:

file-120.jpg

Once we completed our brunch, we went over to Guest Services to sign up for some beverage tastings. James was interested in the martini tasting, and I wanted to do a beer tasting with Dad as a belated birthday present. So, we found times that worked for us, and got those two tastings set up! Around this time, a Princess Gathering was occurring in the lobby:

And then shortly after, we found ourselves walking by/in the shops.

file-125.jpg

Our progress, as shown on a TV outside the Walt Disney Theatre:

file-126.jpg

(I really wish I took more pictures of our progress and the sea conditions throughout the cruise...would’ve been neat to do it at the same time every day. Oh well.)

What shall we do next? Play games of course! So, we went to Diversions and ended up playing Scattergories until about 1:30. Then, Mom and Dad stood in line for wristbands outside Mickey Mates. (The wristbands were to guarantee a special transatlantic pin that would be released either the next day or the day after.) James and I proceeded into the Walt Disney Theatre for the Don “Ducky” Williams presentation! As we entered, he was already doing sketches. It started just after 2:00 and Mom and Dad arrived just in time with two wristbands in hand!

He talked about how he got started and was doing sketches to raffle off the whole time. (As you entered the theatre, you were given a raffle ticket.) He ended up doing about 23 or 24 sketches, and naturally, none of us won. It was such a wonderful presentation and I’m definitely glad we went! Here are some pictures from it:

The presentation ended at about 3:00. We decided we were hungry, so we went upstairs to deck 9 to get some food! Chicken tenders and pizza sounded appetizing, so that’s what we got. We took the food back to the room, ate it, and then turned on the TV and just relaxed. I ended up falling asleep (and I think James did, too!). At 5:00, we started getting ready for the first formal night! It was going to be a purple night for the boys. We each had a purple shirt to wear with our suits!

At roughly 5:45, we were on our way downstairs to head to the theatre. On the way, I took a picture of a leak in the aft elevator lobby and the dinner menu:

file-139.jpg

file-140.jpg

Around 6:00, the doors opened to the Walt Disney Theatre (and yes, we were waiting right outside). We got “our” seats and waited for the show to start! Tonight was “Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story”. I saw it on my very first Disney cruise, and hadn’t seen it since. Everyone else hadn’t seen it before, so we were all very excited for the show! It started right at 6:30...Drizella slipped, there was a fall or two, and the pyro for Franco’s exit didn’t work. Other than that, it was a wonderful show. At times, though, I feel there is too much use of the projection screen. I took LOTS of pictures (shocking):

DAY 3 - May 16th, 2011 - Day At Sea #1 (Part 4)

By 7:30, we were exiting the theatre. In the lobby, we got in line for a formal portrait. Afterwards, we went to the Promenade Lounge to chill before dinner and listen to Midtown. We saw lots of people with the same type of alcoholic drink, so at 8:15 we went on a mission to find it and get one! It appeared they were handing out drinks for free, so we followed a server coming out of Studio Sea with a tray full of drinks and got one! We think it was a Mai Tai, but we knew for certain that it was DELICIOUS...and you can’t beat FREE! After getting the drink, we entered Lumiere’s and found our table.
