Expect the Unexpected: A May/June 2011 Trip Report

Sounds like you had a case of heat exhaustion. Glad you eventually started to feel better. I can relate to not being climatized to the Florida heat. Happens almost every time I go, usually at the beginning of the trip. Which is why I'm going back in July when the heat is at it's highest.

The vine lady at AK is called DeVine :goodvibes Love the pictures of the gorilla. Was he actually that close or did you need to use the zoom on your camera?

Great start so far :thumbsup2

Stinks that you were not feeling well. I bet coming from Canada to the surface of the sun can do a number on your body!

I love those trails at AK. They are so much fun and I think that a lot of people don't go through them.

Sorry you weren't feeling well (sounds like heat stroke or something).

Your gorilla pictures are awesome (as are your other pictures). DH had the duck when we went to Yak & Yeti in 2008 and loved it.

Day 3 started bright and early with the sounds of a tropical rainforest. I was woken up by what sounded like several small birds singing outside our room. Although I was still pretty tired, it was kind of nice. A few minutes later I noticed a pounding in my head. Great. Starting the day with a headache wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, but once I was up and ready to leave I took some painkillers and hoped for the best. (I suffer from migraines, so I was really hoping it wasn’t going to turn out to be one, but I’m pretty used to headaches so I can usually work through them)

We decided to go to the Peppermarket for breakfast since it was open and we were all pretty hungry. Just a few minutes later we were inside El Centro eyeballing a table just outside of the actual food court. My fiancé and I went to get our food while my mom babysat the table, and my dad went around taking pictures. This was the first time we’d been to the Peppermarket so we weren’t quite sure what to do, but the staff that greeted us was very helpful. They gave us a stamp card and explained what each station was, and we were on our way. Originally I wanted waffles, but then I spotted French toast and quickly changed my mind. My fiancé went for waffles. The guy who took my order and prepared my food was alright, but the lady who took my fiancés order and prepared her food was downright awful. She did not look like she wanted to be there at all, and was downright sour. The lady at the drink station was very nice, however. The waffles were advertised with a banana nut topping, but these waffles were plain. My fiancé was not impressed. :sad2: My parents both ended up getting the breakfast skillet (I think). They were happy with it, but also noticed the staff to be generally uninterested.

After breakfast, it was time to head to the bus. The order of the day was to head to Epcot to do the rides in Futureworld, and if we had time to explore a bit of World Showcase, before heading to ‘Ohana for our dinner reservation, and then going to the Magic Kingdom for extra magic hours. Once we got to the bus stop we had bus foo once again, because the first bus that came was for Epcot, and it was literally no more than 3 minutes we waited for it.

Epcot is tied with the Magic Kingdom for my favourite park, so I was really excited to be going to both parks. When Spaceship Earth came into view I started to get teary-eyed. I love that park. It had been a long 3 years, but I was finally back. :cloud9:
IMG_3000.jpg

Once we got in the park we decided to head over to The Land to get fastpasses for Sorin’. We had arrived about 15 minutes after the park opened, and the herds of people were still making their way over to do the same thing we were doing. It was still the same after 3 years, which I thought was kind of crazy, but Sorin’ is an awesome ride. After waiting for my dad to catch up with us (he was taking photos of pretty much everything imaginable) we had our fastpasses in hand, and decided to head over to the Figment ride. My fiancé was the only one out of the 4 of us who had ridden that before, so it was nice to do something completely new to the majority of us. We were able to walk right on and had the ride pretty much to ourselves. It was really cute, and that song got stuck in my head for the rest of the trip. After Figment, we went to see Captain EO because it was another new thing for all of us. It had been Honey I Shrunk the Audience the last time any of us were there. I was kind of excited to see this one because the previous show was really lame (in my opinion) and I knew Captain EO had Michael Jackson, which I thought was neat. I think the verdict was that this was much better than the other show, even though it was pretty much oozing with the 1980’s.
IMG_3006.jpg

IMG_3029-1.jpg

We decided to head over to the other side of the park after Captain EO to get on Test Track and Mission Space. The line was really long for Test Track, which sucked, because it was already hot out and we weren’t willing to wait outside in the heat for the ride (which is one of my favourites). Slightly disappointed, we made our way over to Mission Space. At this point my headache was still there, and not getting any better, just saying.
IMG_3011.jpg

I’m not a thrill seeker, and neither is anyone else I was traveling with (except my dad), so we all opted to do the green side of Mission Space. My fiancé had never been on this one before because she was too afraid that it would be too intense. With a little reassurance she was getting excited (and a little nervous) to take her first mission to Mars. I’m pretty sure I was the navigator and she was the pilot, but I don’t remember where my parents ended up. Aside from my screen being slightly discoloured, it was awesome. My fiancé loved it, and couldn’t believe she’d never done it before. I had a feeling we would be visiting Mars again in the near future.
IMG_3014.jpg

After Mission Space it was time to head back over to Sorin’ for our fastpass time. At this point I was beginning to feel sick again. :sad1: I didn’t want to go back to the hotel just yet, especially not before Sorin’, so I decided to stay for the ride and then head back to the hotel for a nap (and a migraine pill). While in the line up we met a lovely family from Perth, Australia. The one thing that makes waiting in long lines bearable is meeting new people like them. I hope the rest of their vacation went well. We got in row 1 for our flight to the “golden state”, which I was very excited about. I’d read on here that that was the best row to be in because you wouldn’t be able to see people’s feet dangling, and I would definitely agree. It was the best ride I’d ever had. If you don’t mind waiting a little extra for a more awesome flight, definitely ask to be in row 1.

Once we were done at Sorin’ it was lunch time for everyone else, while I split up and went back to the hotel. I really wasn’t feeling well, and I knew it was because I had a migraine. They all went to Sunshine Seasons (which I’m very sad I missed out on) and saw a bit of World Showcase while I went back for a nap.

I felt much better after a quick rest (the pill probably helped too), and was very ready for ‘Ohana. I remembered eating there in 2008 and it being one of the highlights of my trip then, so I couldn’t wait to go back. This time I went to the bus stop nearest our room to wait for one to the Magic Kingdom so I could take the monorail over to the Polynesian. Yet again, I didn’t have to wait any longer than 5 minutes and the first bus to show up was for the Magic Kingdom. I really did have bus foo. At this point I knew I was going to be pretty early and have some time to kill, so I decided to take a quick peek in some of the shops on Main Street before going to dinner.

I could feel myself getting teary-eyed again as we approached the bus station for the Magic Kingdom, so I knew that when I saw the castle I would probably cry. Of course, right on cue, when I went through the breezeway area under the train station and rounded the corner, Cinderella’s Castle came into view and I broke down. There’s just something about being in the Magic Kingdom and seeing the castle that…well, it’s just hard to describe. Once I got over myself, I took look in all of the stores on Main Street, before heading to the monorail. There really are some awesome shops there. I love the crystal shop, and the smell of the candy store made me very aware that I hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast.

As I was going through the turnstiles to leave, a cast member commented on my Alice in Wonderland tattoo, and we had a great conversation. I don’t remember her name though By the time I got to the monorail station, there was one waiting. Maybe I had monorail foo too

When I got to the Polynesian it didn’t take me long to find my dad, who was taking photos of everything. Then I found my fiancé and mom, and we headed over to the very long check-in line. The line went pretty fast, and after more picture taking by my dad (and some by my fiancé) we were being seated at our table. It overlooked the area by the small pond. Our server’s name was Pedro, and he was great. The coconut bred was to die for. I probably could have just eaten that and been happy. But then they brought over a salad, which was also good. Shortly after the salad they brought over chicken wings and dumplings, I think, and sauces. Next came the noodles, steak, and pork. Then it was shrimp. Everything was fantastic. I’m actually getting hungry just thinking about it. After some cute games for the kids, it was time for desert. That’s when we had some pixie dust sprinkled our way :wizard:. Pedro brought us out two cupcakes with Mickey sprinkles for my fiancé and I to celebrate our engagement. It was very unexpected, and very nice! Then it was time fore the real desert. I think it was a bread pudding with banana’s foster and ice cream or something like that…but it was my second favourite desert of the whole trip. It was my fiancés first time there, and she loved it.

And a Hidden Mickey at the Polynesian
100_0037.jpg

We weren’t quite sure if we could move after having so much food, so instead of going right to the park we decided to explore the resort a little to give our food some time to settle. It is a very nice resort, and it’s on my list of ones to stay at some day (along with the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge, and Old Key West).

Now that we felt a little more comfortable it was time to hit the park. When we got to the turnstiles I went through, then my fiance, then my mom, and when my dad tried to get through he couldn't find his key to the world :scared1: So, the only logical explination we could come up with was that he forgot it back at 'Ohana. My mom said she'd go back with him and told my fiance and I to go on and that if we met up later, then we met up, but if not we shouldn't worry about it too much. So, with that, my fiance and I headed in the park.

I've never had a picture taken with Mickey Mouse, and when my fiance found this out, she said that was the first thing we were doing. So, naturally, we went to get in line at Mickey and Minnie's new place. While we were waiting in line a very young girl comes up to us and asks "where's my mommy". :scared1: Obviously both of us were a little alarmed about this, so we looked around and didn't see anyone around her, but when we looked back at her she was already wondering off. At this point my fiance gets out of line and informs a cast member that there was a lost child, and I think they found her right away. I hope she found her mommy! After this slightly alarming event, the line was rather uneventful.

Meeting Mickey was pretty awesome. Here's the picture that they took with my fiance's camera.
IMG_3088.jpg

Once we'd met "the mouse", we made our way down Main Street, and who should we run into by my parents! Apparently my dad had his key to the world in his pocket, but just didn't see it at first. He found it when they were on the monorail back to the Poly so they just rode it back to the park.

Normally when I’m at the Magic Kingdom I go to the right, into Tomorrowland, but this time I wanted to go left, into Adventureland. Everyone else was up for this, so off we went, in search of some adventures. We certainly found them, as our first stop was at the Jungle Cruise. In the past we’ve always been able to walk right on to this one, so I was very surprised to see that it had a wait, but we decided to wait for it because we were still so full. We met some more awesome people while waiting in line for this ride, that for the purposes of this trip report I will call Dallas and Michigan (that’s actually what we called them until we found out their names…. Thanks to them, the wait in the line seemed to fly by, and soon we were cruising down the Amazon. By the time we found a lost temple it had gotten fairly dark out, so it was a pretty neat time of day to be on a jungle cruise. When we returned back to Adventureland, we decided it was time to find some pirates, so off to Pirates of the Caribbean we went. We had a small wait for this one, but it was well worth it. Pirates is another one of my favourite rides. I thought I had read here on the boards that they replaced Davy Jones with Blackbeard, but I wasn’t sure if I read that right or not, but come to find out, they did replace him. I like Blackbeard much better, but Davy Jones made it a bit creepier.
IMG_3089.jpg

After we said farewell to Captain Jack, we were off to the Haunted Mansion, my favourite ride (I discovered that this trip). By now it was pretty late, and we were all tired. So tired that my memory gets fuzzy after this ride, so hopefully I can remember what happened . As we made our way into Frontierland it was easy to see that the Main Street Electrical Parade was just about to start. Lovely. Now don’t get me wrong, I wanted to see the parade, but not right now. Instead of stopping to watch the parade we kept on going over to the Mansion, but that might have been a bit of a mistake. By the time we got near the Liberty Riverboat it was heavily congested with people. It was so bad at one point that I almost started to panic because there were so many people around me and we weren’t moving. Eventually we started moving, very slowly, and in single file, and found our way over to the Haunted Mansion. My fiancé and I got separated from my parents in the crowd, so once we got caught up we went right over. We didn’t have to wait very long before we got to the portrait room, and then went into the stretching room. I love this ride so much. I know it’s not a roller coaster, or any big thrill ride, but there’s something about it that I love. I actually got choked up a few times on the ride, and that’s when I knew it was my favourite. The upgrades they made to the graveyard scene, and to the hitchhiking ghosts are really good. I was very impressed.

I’m pretty sure that after this ride we called it quits. I really don’t remember doing any other rides, but we walked around to Fantasyland to get to the front of the park. By the time we got back by Dumbo, Wishes had started. We decided to stay where we were and watch what we could of Wishes because there was no point in trying to get out then. It was a very different perspective to see the fireworks from, but it was kind of nice for a change.

When we got over to Tomorrowland, they made the announcement that the Magic, Memories, and You was about to start. We couldn’t just leave then, so over we went to the bridge to watch it. I had seen video of it before I left, and I thought it was cool…but that video did not do the show justice. It was really cool. We were watching it from the side, and it was awesome. I’m really glad I got to see it in person, because I hadn’t planned on seeing it. Once it was over I knew I wanted to come back and see it from the front at some point.
IMG_3097.jpg

Once The Magic, Memories, and You was done, my fiancé and I headed to the bus. I’m pretty sure my parents stayed behind, but I don’t quite remember, like I said, it’s a little fuzzy.

Anyway, it had been a fantastic day, despite my migraine. We had good food, lots of laughs, and were thoroughly exhausted. Yet again, we got back to the hotel and fell into bed.

End of Day 3.

Sorry you weren't feeling well. I think the First Aid stations are amazing! I had to use one in 2009 (at DHS). The staff is so very helpful there!

I'm glad to hear you had some pixie dust sprinkled your way for ST!

The vine lady .. her name is DeVine (or DiVine). Not sure of the correct spelling. I've looked for her the past two years and finally saw her this year. :cloud9:

The food looked so yummy though! Glad your parents arrived. Totally love your pictures! Very nice!! :goodvibes

Okay, will wait for more! popcorn::

I wasn't sure if that was her name or not so I didn't say it just in case...but now I know :thumbsup2

Thanks! :goodvibes

Nice photos! I especially love the one with the sun streaming onto the path at the Animal Kingdom. Your gorilla encounter sounds amazing. They really do look so similar to humans. I never realized that the parks had first aid stations like that. It's great that your fiancee thought of them and you were able to stay there until you felt a bit better!

Thanks! :goodvibes

All of those photos were zoomed in except for the one where he's drinking...it's only zoomed in a very small amount. And thanks! :goodvibes

Stinks that you were not feeling well. I bet coming from Canada to the surface of the sun can do a number on your body!

I love those trails at AK. They are so much fun and I think that a lot of people don't go through them.

It sure can! I thought I was prepared, but I guess I wasn't. And it really is a shame that not many people go on the trails, they're really nice.

Joining in!!! Entertaining trip report so far!!!

Thanks! And :welcome:

Sorry you weren't feeling well (sounds like heat stroke or something).

Your gorilla pictures are awesome (as are your other pictures). DH had the duck when we went to Yak & Yeti in 2008 and loved it.

It was definitely heat stroke. I've had it before at Disney, so you'd think I would have recognized the signs, but I was just too caught up in what I was doing to realize until it was too late.

Boy, sick two days in a row! That sucks. I hope you were better for the rest of the trip.

I agree with you, Captain EO is so much better than Honey I Shrunk the Audience. I need to try Ohana, people say it is good. But we like the Kona Cafe which is right across from Ohana. Even though you were sick it sounds like you still had a pretty good day!

I'm so glad that your migraine and illness didn't keep you from enjoying the end of your day. We ate at Ohana for the first time this trip and it was fantastic.

Dinner at Ohana looked and sounded yummy! Do you remember for the Magic, Memories, and You show, was there still Wishes fireworks afterwards? Or do they just skip Wishes when they show the Memories show?

It depends on when you watch it I think. Both nights I got to see it (you'll read about the second time a bit later in my report) were extra magic hour nights but the park was open until at least 11pm to regular guests, so they had 2 parades. I'm assuming they have one showing before the first parade, then the fireworks, then another showing before the second parade. That's how it seemed to work anyway.

Yet again, I woke up bright and early. Only this time it was to the sound of snoring. Then I heard the tropical birds singing. It was probably around 6:30, and I was starving. I remember being so hungry that I had to eat my fiancés half eaten rice crispy treat from Pizza Planet. I felt bad, but I had no choice. Since I couldn’t fall back to sleep after that, I thought of places we could go for breakfast.

My original plan when we arrived in Disney World was to check in to the hotel and then head to Downtown Disney and have lunch at the Earl of Sandwich. Since that didn’t happen thanks to the American Airlines fiasco, I was afraid that we wouldn’t get to “The Earl” at all, so I had the thought that maybe we could have breakfast there. Once everyone was up, I pitched my idea. It was received with open arms. My parents love the Earl of Sandwich, and my fiancé had never been. It was going to be a good day.

As we were on our way to the bus stop, the one nearest our room, I said “Now, we’ll probably have to wait a while for a bus this morning” because we weren’t going to a park, but guess what happened when we got to the bus stop? That’s right, bus foo. The first bus to come by was for Downtown Disney. What luck we were having with the buses! This had never happened at a resort before, and I loved it.

The bus ride to Downtown Disney seemed to take a while, especially because we stopped at Typhoon Lagoon first. When we got there the only thing open was our beloved Earl of Sandwich. It took us a little while to get from the bus stop to the Earl because we stopped for photos and had to wait for my dad to get caught up with us, but once we got there the memories came rushing back. The last time I had been there was in December 2007, and I had the festive turkey sandwich. It was the most amazing sandwich I’d ever eaten. It tasted just like a turkey dinner and I couldn’t believe it. I knew this breakfast wouldn’t be quite that good, but I had high hopes. I was especially excited for the Earl’s Gray Lemonade. :lovestruc I’m pretty sure everyone had the breakfast sandwich with bacon, but I had the one with ham. It was really good. I was a little sad this would probably be the only time we ate at the Earl, and unfortunately I was right. I’m really glad we got to go there though.

Once we had finished breakfast, my parents and my fiancé and I split up. I knew my dad would drive us nuts with his pictures if we stayed with them, and I really wanted to get to a park. At the same time I did want to have a look around at Downtown Disney, so we decided to take a fairly quick look around. Our “fairly quick” look around ended up taking the entire morning, but I was fine with that. It was a relaxing morning, which was just what I needed after having been sick two days in a row. Before we left Downtown Disney, we went to the Art of Disney store. I wanted to look for a sketch of Wall-E or Eve for my fiancé, since Wall-E is her favourite movie. I was lucky enough to find an Eve sketch already done up, so I got it sent back to the resort so it would be more of a surprise to her.

Epcot was on our agenda for the afternoon, so I thought the quickest way there would be to take a bus to the Beach and Yacht Club and then take a boat over or walk over from there. I may have been wrong in that. It took us about an hour to get to the Yacht Club from Downtown Disney once we left. We went to Typhoon Lagoon first, and someone wanted off but didn’t realize we were there until the bus pulled away from the stop, so he had to loop back around to let them off. Then we went to the Swan, and then the Dolphin, before reaching the Yacht Club. When we got to the Dolphin my fiancé made several comments about how the dolphin on the hotel looks more like a fish. I totally agree, but I seem to recall that there is a reason for it looking like that. If anyone has some insight it would be awesome!

By the time we got to the Yacht Club we were both hungry, so we went in search of a food court. My fiancé didn’t think they would have one because it was such a fancy hotel. I thought they had to have one. We looked for about 15 minutes and couldn’t find one, so we gave up and just went to Epcot. In our search we found out where Beaches and Cream was, so at least it wasn’t a completely wasted trip because we wanted to go back for The Kitchen Sink later on.

It was another hot day, but this time we were armed with lots of water and were drinking it like crazy. By the time we got to the turnstiles by World Showcase though, we were out of water. We happened to go in the gift shop by that entrance to get some air conditioning, when we found a huge bottle of water. Score! With more water in hand, off we went.

We decided to go to Electric Umbrella for lunch, because I’d heard good things here on the boards. On our way over we looked around in the shops in the UK, to get some much-needed a/c, and stopped in the gift shop at the font of World Showcase. It was nice to stroll along at such a leisurely pace, but at the same time I was itching to get to a ride. I couldn’t remember what side Electric Umbrella was on, and we were close to Club Cool, so we decided to make a quick stop in there first. I don’t remember there being an orange cola there the last time I was there, but it quickly became my new favourite (the old one being Vega Beta from Japan). I thought that the restaurant was just around the corner from Club Cool, so we went out the door and into the next one we saw, which as we quickly found out, was the ice cream place and not the Electric Umbrella. A very nice lady lent us her map so we could figure out how close we were, and felt very silly when we looked up from the map to see the sign for the restaurant right across the way. After a quick thank you, we were at the restaurant and ready to order. By this time it was close to 2, and our dinner reservation was at 4:30, so we decided to just split a meal to hold us over until dinner. We ended up getting the chicken strips, which were very good. The place was packed though, so we ended up having to sit outside in the heat, which sucked.

Once we were done lunch it was time for us to head over to the Hollywood Studios, just so we could be there early and poke around before dinner. I was a little sad that we didn’t get a chance to do a ride at Epcot, so on our way out of the park we hopped on Spaceship Earth. Despite how slow that ride is I still enjoy it, especially now that Judy Dench (sp?) is the narrator. I love British accents (well, most accents really).
DSCF2123.jpg

After Spaceship Earth we headed out of the park and made our way to the buses. This time we didn’t have bus foo. We waited for at least 15-20 minutes for a bus, which really isn’t all that bad. It does suck a little in the heat, but I guess our luck had to run out eventually.

At the Studios we took our time wondering around in shops and taking pictures. My fiancés favourite movie is Wall-E, like I mentioned earlier, so I had been on the look out for any Wall-E merchandise the whole trip. So far I had found her a Christmas ornament and some pins, along with the print, but she was sure that there was a Pixar store somewhere at this park, so we went in search of it. Eventually we stumbled upon what she remembered as being the right store, but there was nothing Wall-E in it, unfortunately. We still had 45 minutes to kill at this point, so we headed in to One Man’s Dream. My fiancé had never been in there, and I knew that they had spruced it up since I was there last, plus it was air conditioned, so it was the perfect spot to look around. There is a lot of really neat things in there, and although we spent at least half an hour looking around, we definitely could have spent longer. We both wanted to get back there, but didn’t.
IMG_3115.jpg

DSCF2129.jpg

It was over to the Brown Derby after that, and just as we got there I could see my dad looking around in a panic. We were at least 10 minutes early, and apparently he’d already been there for half an hour waiting for us. He already checked in, so that’s why he was a little worried. I didn’t see my mom anywhere, but was quickly informed my mom went to dinner with my brother, who had just gotten there that morning. I thought it was a shame she was missing out on what was sure to be such a good meal, but it was up to her.

We were seated quickly, and after a few minutes we were ready to order. We had a few questions for our server though, and he was able to help us. I was torn between the pork and the steak, but went with the steak. My fiancé had the grouper, and my dad also had the steak. My dad also ordered the cobb salad for us to share, since he’d herd such good things about it. When our server brought out our bread, we had a bit more pixie dust sprinkled our way :wizard:. He said Mickey wanted to congratulate us on our engagement, and gave us some champagne courtesy of the mouse. Again, it was very unexpected, but very nice.

I really enjoyed the overall atmosphere of the restaurant, and the food was amazing. My dad was very impressed with his steak. He said it was the best steak he’d ever had, which is saying a lot. I also thoroughly enjoyed my steak, and my fiancé absolutely loved the grouper. We all agreed the meal was well worth the 2 credits it took per person. I had the grapefruit cake for dessert, my dad had the apple cheesecake (I think that’s what it was called anyway), and my fiancé had the seasonal cobbler. We took pictures of everything, but the good ones are on my dad’s camera, and he’s refusing to give me any photos until he’s edited them all (which will take a long time), so it might be a little while before I can post them, but for now I'll post what I've got, and replace them with the better ones later.

After dinner we were going to stay together, but my dad wanted to take more photos around the Studios, and although my fiancé and I wanted to stick around, we both were itching to get back to Epcot for Illuminations. My dad said he wanted to get over to Epcot too, but he just wasn’t sure when he was going over, so we hoped that we’d run into him over there and said our “see ya laters”. On the way out of the park my fiancé wanted to find a pay phone to call her aunt. She’d always gone to Disney World with her aunt, so for her to be there without her was a little weird for her, so before we left home she had bought a calling card to keep in touch with her mom and her aunt back home. The phone call was fairly quick all things considered, and after a quick pit stop, we were headed out of the park and towards the buses.

When we got within sight of the bus stop we could see that one was there for Epcot, so we jogged a little to catch the bus, but we made it and were off to Epcot. More bus foo.

By the time we got to Epcot it was probably around 7:30 or 8, so we didn’t have long to wait for Illuminations, but we both wanted to check out Japan since it’s our favourite pavilion. I was on a mission this trip to find apple gummies. When I was there in 2008 I randomly picked up a small package of apple flavoured gummies, and they were the best gummy candies I’d ever had, so I was hoping to get some more this trip.

Before going into the main shop, we looked around in the small kiosk outside first, and I found some apple gummies there, but they weren’t the same packaging. I figured I’d get them anyway and then I could come back for more if they were the right ones. As it turned out, they weren’t the same ones, but they were just as good, so I wanted to go back for more. We took our time looking around in the store, though, and when we were done we still had 10 minutes to spare before Illuminations. My fiancé decided she was going to get a Pokemon plush toy the next time we were back in Epcot, but she just had to decide which one.

Since it was so close to Illuminations, we just decided to watch it from Japan. Neither of us had seen it from there before, so it was kind of nice to see it from a different perspective. My fiancé likes Illuminations better than Wishes, so she was really happy to be seeing it, and so was I for that matter. I really enjoy Illuminations as well.

Once the show was over, I figured there’d be no point in rushing out of the park right away because there would be lots of crowds, so we stuck back in Japan for a bit to let the crowds disperse. After a little while we made our way around World Showcase, going the long way around, so that my fiancé could get some photos if she wanted. We had to wait for the barge to go under the bridge in that weird outpost area…does anyone know what that is supposed to be? Africa maybe? My fiancé didn’t know that the bridge could rise, so that surprised her.

By the time we left the park, there weren’t many people around. It was kind of neat to see. We had a bit of a wait for a bus, but it wasn’t too bad. When we got back to the hotel, we were exhausted, as per usual. It had been a fun, semi-relaxing day. I was ready for Harry Potter!

Nice hat pic from DHS. I've never seen a photo taken from that perspective before. It looks pretty neat :thumbsup2 What did you think of the grapefruit cake? I've seen some sour faces from people who have tried it before. I didn't mind it but I couldn't eat the whole thing. The flavour got to me after a while. I love walking through an empty WS after Illuminations ends and the crowds clear out. It's so calming to walk through each country and hear how the music changes.

I actually really enjoyed it, but I like citrus fruits a lot. I found it to be the perfect combination of sweet and tart, but I can see how some people wouldn't be overly enthusiastic about it.

That photo was actually taken by my fiance, but I'll pass that along :thumbsup2 She's into taking artistic shots a lot, and quite a few of the photos on here were taken by her

Thanks for the Poly supper pics. It has been a while since we ate there and I am looking forward to it as we usually have breakfast.

Sorry to read about the migraine. Yuck. Never fun but especially not on vacation!

Great DHS and Epcot photos.:thumbsup2

I'm glad that your medicine finally kicked in and you were able to enjoy tour day!
And it's awesome that you still feel the magic so intensly as an adult!

I was really hoping I would be totally healthy on this vacation, but at least I got my illnesses over-with early on in the trip. And thanks! :goodvibes

Yeah, migraine's suck, but thank goodness for medication :worship:

I just hope I never loose that ability :thumbsup2

I LOVE Brown Derby! We ate there the first time last October. When we were in DHS in May we did Lunch with an Imagineer there. The food is always so good and we love the cobb salad.

When we saw Illuminations we took our time leaving the park as well. It was such a nice experience because you don't have to deal with the crowds.

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't updated in a long time, but I promise I haven't forgotten about my TR! Hopefully I'll be back sometime this week with another update. :thumbsup2

*Sorry there aren't any pictures in this update yet, but I'll add some really soon...also, sorry it's taken me so long to continue this TR. I get sad coming on the DIS when I don't have a trip planned...but there may be one in the works*

I woke up on Day 5 feeling very excited…today we were going to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! I had followed the construction pretty much since day one, so finally getting to see it all finished in person was a huge deal to me.

Having another early start to the day, my brother came to pick us up at the CSR and we drove over to UOR from there. We got there a touch later than I was hoping, but still early enough that I was satisfied. We splurged for preferred parking, and got in the Cat in The Hat lot.

This was the first time my fiancé had been to UOR since she was 9, and I hadn’t been since 2006, so needless to say, as we were walking along towards the entrance to City Walk, we were both really excited. Something that I thought was different was that the bag check wasn’t anywhere near the park entrance, but was back in the pedestrian walkways that take you to City Walk. I guess it must cut down on the lines getting in to the parks, but it seemed a little odd that you had to get your bag searched even if all you wanted to do is go to City Walk.

Once we got to the entrance to Islands of Adventure, we had to go to the kiosk to redeem our vouchers for actual tickets. There was hardly a line there, which was great because the park had literally just opened. Everyone was more or less making a b-line back towards where the Wizarding World of Harry Potter was, but we broke away from the crowd just before SuessLanding for a brief pit stop. As I closed the door to my stall I noticed a purse hanging on the hook on the back of the door, so once we had finished there my first order of business was to find a “cast member” and pass the purse along in hopes they would put it in the lost and found. Luckily it didn’t take long to come across someone who was very helpful and assured me it would get put in the lost and found at the front of the park. Satisfied, we continued to make our way back to WWoHP.

As we made our way through SuessLanding and then The Lost Continent, I was reminded of how much I missed that park. I kept pointing out points of interest to my fiancé as we went along, because she had never been there before. I wanted her to see Posidion’s Fury, but there just wasn’t enough time in the day for it, so that will have to wait until next time (if it’s still there then).

When we rounded the bend and Hogsmede came into view I got a little teary-eyed. Here it was, at long last.

Thanks to my reading up before hand, I knew that the best plan of action for us was to put our stuff in the lockers at Dragon Challenge and then head over to the Forbidden Journey line up. By now the park had been open for about half an hour, and it was already packed in WWoHP. Olivander’s had a really long line, but we bypassed that and headed straight for the Forbidden Journey. The line was really long, but I knew to just make my way to a “cast member” to let them know we didn’t have any bags, and that we would be directed as to where to go.

We only had to wait about 20-25 minutes in the line to get on the ride, which was awesome. The line moved fairly quick, which is good in that you get on the ride quicker, but is bad in that you don’t get to take in the themeing as much as you would like. The site I had looked mentioned this, so I wasn’t disappointed. They suggested to do the castle tour first, and then get in line, but I was itching to get on the ride, so we went on the ride first, then did the castle tour.

*FORBIDDEN JOURNEY SPOILER ALLERT*
The ride itself is amazing. I was really nervous, but I had no need to be. It was unlike any other ride I’d ever been on because of the movement of the ride vehicle. It really did feel like you were flying. The scene with the Whomping Willow was done really well. It looked just like the tree from the movies, and the motion was seemless. The Dementors were also really well done, very spooky. The large spiders were done well too…almost too well. I had to shut my eyes for a minute during that part…I don’t like spiders. The on-ride photo that we had turned out awesome. My fiancé had the funniest expression on her face, and I had my eyes shut. We would have bought it, except it was about $30 for one picture…no way! All in all though, it was and still is my favourite ride of all time.
*END FORBIDDEN JOURNEY SPOILER ALLERT*

After the ride, my brother and parents split up from my fiancé and I. Our plan was to go to the Hogs Head for some butterbeer, while everyone else wanted to do the castle tour. We agreed to meet up later. So, it was off to the Hogs Head. I think we got there just as they were about to set up a proper queue, because the line we were in went in the opposite direction to what they wanted, but since no one was there to tell us where to stand, we were okay where we were. At this point there were two lines of people wanting butterbeer, one large line, and one smaller line. My fiancé and I were in the smaller one. The bartender was pouring butterbeer for our line first to make things a little easier, and I think that because he was just trying to get people through quickly he gave us our butterbeer for free! I tried to pay him, but he said it was “on the house”! Who would have guessed we would get some pixie dust sprinkled our way in IoA.

Hidden Mickey? I think so...
IMG_3153.jpg

The butterbeer was really good, just what the both of us needed at the time. It was really hot out, and it was crowded, so it was nice to take a break from the heat and crowds for a bit, and just soak up the atmosphere. We decided that because it was so crowded already, and getting worse that it would probably be best to see other things and come back later on, so we decided to go on Spider Man next. I could have sat there for hours, but we had lots of stuff to see and time was ticking on, so off we went, taking pictures along the way.

After taking a quick pit stop in ToonTown, we got in line for The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman. Now, every time prior to this trip I’d been staying on-site, which gives you an express pass for every ride so you don’t have to wait as long. I had been used to waiting a max of 15 minutes for most rides at USO and IoA, and once we got to the Spider Man ride and I saw a posted wait time of 35 minutes (could have been 40, I can’t remember), with the line up out the door, I realized just how silly it would be to think we could get everything done in one day with both parks. It was this moment when I decided to let go of certain rides, and choose to do my favourites only.

About 5 minutes of waiting in the line up for the ride, my fiancé informs me that she has to pee again. This is about 10 minutes after having just gone in ToonTown. I asked her if she wanted to get out of line now while we hadn’t gotten too far into it, or if she thought she’d be able to make it until after the ride, and she opted to stay. She really should have gone. Once we got into the room with the video playing she was about to burst, so it was decision time. Let her go find a restroom on her own and stay in line to do the ride, or leave with her and come back. I couldn’t just let her go by herself, never having been in the park before, so we decided to leave, but at this point we had literally just passed that room with the video and were picking up our 3-D glasses, so essentially, about to get on the ride. We walked up to a ride attendant to explain the situation to see if we might be able to come back and walk on, rather than waiting in the line again. She was very understanding and said it wouldn’t be a problem, so off we went.

When we got back to the ride, we entered through the exit and the attendant let us right on, which was great. It was a favourite ride of mine, so I enjoyed it, and my fiancé thought it was worth the wait, as she enjoyed it too. So, the moral of this story…if you need to pee when you get in a line up, leave right away and go back.

Once we were done at Spider Man, my fiancé was getting hungry, and it was only about 11:30 or so, so we decided to break for an early lunch in hopes of beating the crowds. The first time I went to USO and we stayed on-site, one of the places we ate was Thunder Falls Terrace. I’m not sure if it was because we were all so hungry, or because the chef was having a good day, but the food that time was to die for. I enjoyed it so much that I knew I had to take my fiancé there when we made our visit, so the next order of business was to backtrack to Jurassic Park for lunch.

The food was just as good as I remember, but it was a shame I wasn’t as hungry as I had been before because I ended up not eating about half of my chicken. My fiancé made a pretty good dent in hers though, and she really enjoyed it too. It was also nice being able to watch the River Adventure come down right outside the window, and since my fiancé is a big dinosaur nerd, she enjoyed the themeing.

By the time we were done eating, it was getting really hot out, so we decided to head over to Pop Eye to cool down a bit. I figured the lineup would be really long because it was so warm, but to our surprise, we only had to wait 5 minutes or so. The ride was as awesome as always. It had been one of my favourites in the past, so to be able to share that with my fiancé was really cool. She liked it too, but she said she still liked Kali more because of the themeing. After having been on Kali now, I can say that I still like Pop Eye better…it’s longer.

So now that we were completely soaked, we thought it would be a good time to head over to USO to check out a few rides there. On my list of things to do was E.T, The Simpsons, Men in Black, The Mummy, and Jimmy Newtron if it was operational that day. We were hoping to go back over to IoA around 5 simply to soak up the rest of the Wizarding World. It was a lot to do in a few short hours, but I felt up to the challenge.

Things at Universal hadn’t changed a whole lot for me, despite the addition of the Rip, Ride, Rocket and the Simpsons. Walking through the archway was like seeing an old friend again. It was nice to be back, but somehow I wasn’t as impressed as I had once been. My fiancé didn’t remember much of anything from her pervious visit, except for the Kong ride, which was no longer there.

The first thing I wanted to do in USO was E.T. It had been a family favourite on past trips, and I couldn’t wait to do it again. It was as great as always, and walking through the forest brought back memories. My fiancé enjoyed it too, she thought it was cute.

We decided to head over to the Simpsons after E.T, but as we were on our way over we were discussing how much we didn’t really like the show growing up, so in the end, we bypassed it altogether. Looking back on it, I’m a little disappointed I didn’t get to ride it, but I loved Back to the Future so much that it would seem sacrilegious to go on the Simpsons ride. I’m sure the overall movement of the ride has gotten way better, and the screens are better, but I’m still sad that they took it out and put the Simpsons in its place. Next time I’m there I’ll go on it....

So after deciding against The Simpsons we went to Men In Black: Alien Attack. I love that ride so much…I wish we could have done it more than once, but my fiancé has a bit of trouble on spinning rides, and at the end of the ride you spin for a good 15 seconds or so, which is about the limit she can take. She really liked it though, despite the spinning. It was neat to see the whole line, where you enter in the “elevator”…I’d only been in the express line so I always bypassed that part. I got the highest score in the car, but it wasn’t as good as some of the other times I’d been on it.

You have to put your stuff in a locker to go on that ride, and it was a busy day, so it took us a minute to get a locker but we got one eventually. When we went back to get our stuff out of the locker, there was some kind of an error, so we had to find an attendant to help us, only there wasn’t anyone around, which was frustrating. Apparently we took too long to put our stuff in the locker or something…I still don’t quite know what happened. Anyway, we had to wait a good 15 minutes until someone came along and we could get our stuff back.

Once the locker incident was rectified, we made our way over to Jaws, but it was down so we couldn’t go on. At this point I was getting a little hungry, and the funnel cake stand just happened to be close by, so we stopped for a funnel cake. My fiancé had never had one, so instead of getting one each, we just split one. She really enjoyed it, but we were glad we only got one because more than half of one would have been too much.

As we were eating our funnel cake, we got to talking about the WWoHP, and decided that despite the fact we didn’t get to do a whole lot at USO, we wanted to go back and soak up the atmosphere there until we had to leave. Of course we took our time leaving the park and making our way back over, but that was our general course of action.

We almost went on Twister, and Shrek, but just browsed around in the gift shops instead. The Rip, Ride, Rocket was down that day so we didn’t get to see it in action, but I still can’t get over how big that drop is…there is no way I could tackle that one. As we walked past The Mummy I tried to talk my fiancé into riding it, but she wasn’t having it, so we skipped that one too.

So, with a few more pictures and one last wave goodbye, it was time to head back over to IoA for the last 3 hours of the day or so.

DSCF2217.jpg

When we got back to IoA we did the Cat in the Hat, and the Seuss Trolley Train Ride before slowly meandering back to WWoHP. Once back there, we went into the gift shop that you come out of on the HP ride, I think it’s called Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods. I noticed you could see the locker area for the ride through the gift shop, so because we were right there, we decided to do the ride one more time. It was just as awesome the second time. After this ride we explored the gift shops some more, and split a bottle of pumpkin juice in the owlry. Once done the pumpkin juice, we just sat there and soaked up the HP atmosphere some more, before going back into the gift shops to make our purchases. I was given money by a friend of mine to get her stuff from WWoHP, so I ended up getting her some pumpkin juice and a few chocolate frogs. I bought a pink pigmy puff…it’s soo cute!

By this time it was time to head back to the front of the park to meet back up with everyone else and head back. Once we met up with everyone, that’s when we decided we wanted to try and see if could get the on-ride photo of my fiancé and I from the first time we rode the ride in the morning, so back through the park we went. At this point, it was about 30 minutes to park closing, so as tired as everyone was we hurriedly walked back. When we got there, that’s when we found out how much it would be, and decided we just couldn’t do it, so back to the front of the park we went. It was after park closing now, and we were just taking our good old time leaving. Before we headed back to the resort, we took a quick stop in the Hard Rock Café shop.

Overall, the pace we had was a bit hurried for the whole day and there were other rides I would have liked to have done, but I think I would have been rushing us too much to have done anything more than what we did. All in all, it was a long and busy day, but it was awesome, and one of the highlights of my trip. I hope to get back to USR and have 3 days to spend between both parks so it wouldn’t be as rushed, but I was happy just to see WWoHP, let alone my other favourite rides.

Up next: Day 6…Chai Cremes.
