Almost bought K-r until B&H rep shot me down...

I called today wanting to order the K-r after debating it with the D5100. The rep said dont buy the K-r because Nikon and Canon are in the business of selling cameras and Pentax is not. He said the D5100 beats it hands down. I wanted to buy the K-r and a Tamron 17-50 f2.8. Anyway now I dont know what to do. I am nervous about the K-r because I cant get one locally and I have never seen one in person. The D5100 is $200 more that I was wanting to put towards a better lens for the K-r. I just sold a T2i and need to pick up another camera fast....

Sure sounds like a salesman was trying to upsell you. I have purchased a lot of stuff from B & H and never had that experience. That is why I try to purchase as much online as possible. I do my research and try to make my purchase without talking to anyone. That's too bad you ran into that type of response when you are trying to spend money in their store. With that type of response, I'd be calling Adorama!

I dont know what to do I was just looking at the D90 which I could get the body for $799 which is the same price as the D5100 with more controls and it records enough video for me.

Keep in mind that camera companies give incentives to salesmen to push certain lines. Nikon is supposed to have some of the best incentives out there. And no salesman can tell you what camera is right for you. be it Pentax, Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus... only YOU know what's right for you. And if you're not sure on which one that is then you're most likely going to be second guessing the decision for a long time... or until your next camera.

Pentax not in the business of selling cameras... heheh. Pentax may not have the market saturation in the US that Canon and Nikon do, but they most definitely are in the business and they do make some great equipment.

thanx for the reassurance of the K-r

I've never had that experience with B&H either. Others yes but there, no.

I'm a little curious why you sold the T2i and are replacing it, if you don't mind commenting. Most, myself included, agree that the T2i is at worst, a fine entry-level DSLR and at best, a great intermediate DSLR. What gives, if you don't mind sharing? I'm not going to criticize your decision. I just want to know.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am the proud owner of a 60D and a T2i and many, many other Canons before these.

Thanks.

I was going to ask the same thing for the hopes that it might help us decide if the Nikon or Pentax is best for you.

I am shocked they did that! Adorama will be getting more of my business if they are going to act like that. Pentax has been in the photography business for a LONG time. He was either an idiot or pushing an upsale. BTW, there is a huge supply of used Pentax lenses that still work like normal on a Pentax DSLR.

FWIW, I do not like the feel of any Rebel I have every held, am somewhat alright with entry level Nikons, and love the feel of the entry level Pentax cameras.

The minute a salesman starts to upsell me on something, I walk away.

It sounds like you did your research over a long period of time, and made a decision that was right for you.

I too am surprised that they did that, I have always been very pleased with B&H.

ukcatfan,
To me, the articulating screen is a huge advantage much more than the others. However, my reasoning for that is being able to capture photos that others might be able to just take a knee and get. For me taking pictures of kids/dogs/whatever at their level is difficult for me as I have a muscular condition so bending/kneeling is not worth the picture opportunity for me, as the pain trade off is huge. With my D5000 (and previously Sony H9), I just switch to live view, swivel the LCD and lower the camera to the height I need.

HPS3,
Not sure if you have held the D90 vs. the D5100 but if you are thinking about the D90 I would go find one to hold before deciding. I was debating spending the extra for the D90 when I bought my D5000 but when I got to the store it was a no brainer for me as the D90 felt to heavy/bulky for me. Not to say that is the same thought you will come away with, you may have the opposite opinion.

I agree that there are certain people where it would be very beneficial, but the avg person will hardly ever use it. Since the OP never even mentioned it, i am guessing that he (she?) will not use it much.

If I recall from another thread, the OP was just not comfortable with the T2 - holding it. And that is a good enough reason to switch - because you do need to be comfortable with the camera you are shooting with. I don't think it was a knock on the camera's abilities at all - just purely comfort. By the sound of it, the OP would do better with a camera that has a larger, deeper grip design for easier one-hand holding - Nikon, Sony, and Pentax all tend to have deeper, larger grips than the entry Canons do.

I am also disappointed to hear that B&H let a salesman work for them who would so blatantly push one model of camera over another, and do so in an insulting way. I guess in one way it's good, because it's so clearly obvious that he was shilling for one company and trying to upsell/get a sales bonus or perk...it would be worse if he had done it more subtly.

If Pentax isn't in the business of selling cameras, I wonder what business they are in? They don't seem very strong in the automobile business, I haven't seen any good MP3 players by Pentax...certainly home kitchen appliances aren't their strong suit. I would have guessed cameras to be a very key market for them, but maybe the B&H rep is better informed.

Advice to the OP - do not listen to B&H reps' recommendations for one particular brand. Do not listen to the recommendations of Disboard members for one particular brand. Do not listen to your neighbor's recommendations for one particular brand. Do not listen to ANYONE'S recommendations for one particular brand. Listen to YOU - look at features, look at designs, look at functionality, handle cameras, feel the build, feel the grip, check out lens options, check out performance specifications...read through reviews and user comments but only weigh those as a small percentage of your decision...then pick the camera that is best for you, not the brand. Just the fact that you got the T2 and are not happy or comfortable with it tells me that you've already made the mistake once of either listening to the advice of others or not sufficiently shopping all brands in the marketplace...so don't make that mistake again. If you like the Pentax, get the Pentax. If you are unsure about the Pentax, then I'd strongly recommend trying to get hands on one before buying it to make sure it is best for you. Definitely make sure you have seen everything that's available from ALL brands - Sony, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic - and really made sure you knew each camera's features and advantages. Then when you're ready to buy, if you get another salesperson like that first one, ask to be transferred to his manager or superior immediately, let them know that the salesman's approach was wrongheaded, misguided, and may end up costing their company future business, then buy the camera you want.

I agree with the idea that you need to do your own research before purchasing a camera. I know researching is a pain in the butt and it can be very confusing and take a lot of time to sort out.

It sounds like you are in a hurry so I'm going to offer up an idea that might help your decision. Why don't you rent the camera you are considering purchasing to give it a try out?

There are places online which will rent camera equipment. I think the trick here is to find a rental company that offers your model. I'm sure some of the aficionados of the Pentax brand might have an idea about who rents them.

This would solve your time crunch problem and might help to firm up your purchasing decision.

As a big fan of B and H I'm sorry to hear that you had this experience. I've bought a ton of stuff from them and I've never experienced any thing close to brand pandering. I think you were dealing with the exception rather than the rule at B and H.

Good luck!

I can certainly understand the comfort argument. It's one of the reasons I went with the 50D over the D90 for my first DSLR. Now I'm using a 7d.

I'm a Canon man myself, but I can tell you my BIL has a Pentax and he is happy as a lark with it. I had it in my hands a few times and couldn't find anything wrong with it.

I really want the Kr I am just worried about indoor focusing issue. I take a lot of pics of my 2 girls

Where did you hear about that? There are no issues that I have ever heard about. Pentax "used to" be known to have slightly slower and less accurate focusing on their DSLRs, but that was about four years ago. They were still good though and only slightly worse than Canon and Nikon. They have been much improved and there should be zero problems with it. By that I mean it will do just as good as any other brand DSLR.

I can't believe this. That salesman was out of bounds completely. He tried to steer you away from buying what you want and instead he lost the sale completely. What an idiot. I would complain to the supervisor. That should NEVER happen. Not only that but he actually said that Pentax isn't in the business of selling Camera's???? That makes him even more of an idiot. He should not be working at that company. IIRC, Pentax has been been making lenses since 1919. Nikon started only 2 years earlier in 1917 and Canon is the baby of the 3, having started in 1937.

As much as I love using Nikon (have been since the late 1980's) I would have no problem recommending Pentax camera's to anyone. They make excellent equipment and have some great lenses.

I've found that indoor lighting issues are going to be with any camera. The one's that have the least issues are one's that use better lenses.

The Pentax body you picked out with that f/2.8 lens is a GREAT starter combo. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I have the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for my Nikon and love it. Though I don't use it as much since I got the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8. The Tamron got me some great shots in all kinds of lighting including a wedding I did for a friend that was in a very dark room with high ceilings that were painted black. It was a nightmare for focusing, but I got through it with no problems and was very happy I had that Tamron.

I would say, screw B&H and buy that combo some place else. Obviously they don't want your business. either that or just order it online. You know what you want so there is no need to talk to one of their "salesman".

It's funny, I've seen consumer reviews for so many cameras and lenses saying that they have focusing issues it makes me wonder how many are really focusing issues and how many are user error or a lack of understanding the equipment.
