How this Trip Report came to be

The hard disk on our Apple Mac G5 died last week. It just didn’t get out of bed one morning and when we visited the Genius’ at a MacStore , they only confirmed that the hard disk was dead.

All our data is unretrievable and the only things of value there would have been our pictures, which thankfully DH had backed up on an external drive.

I’ve been slowly transferring the pictures across from the external drive to my laptop (and my external drive) and loading the ‘better’ of them into photobucket for backup purposes.

In a way, it's a blessing in disguise because without a trip to look forward, I can look at some of the previous holidays and pretend that I'm there instead. Definitely one way for me to beat the no-holiday blues.

I mentioned the pictures to my Friends in a Box, particularly the 2007 trip, and a number of them thought I should put a Trip Report together (challenged me to it is more the case…). So, here goes.....

In June 2007, DH had one of those 1-week work meetings to attend. I was given 6 months advance notice for this meeting….which of course meant T-R-O-U-B-L-E!

Six.Whole.Months. for me to scheme and plan!

And when you add the fact that both DH and I had an excrement bucketful of leave, that only meant D-O-U-B-L-E T-R-O-U-B-L-E!

DS had just started prep in 2007 so …….

Yes!

I turned a 1-week work meeting into a 6-week vacation for me (5 weeks for DH). I think the hardest bit about the planning of this trip was for DH to get the time off from work…..but given how much leave he had owing; in the end it was no contest.

DH and I debated about where to go on this vacay. Being summer, Alaska featured high on the list. And we almost did go up the NorthWest Passage; but my chicken tail-feathers quivered at the thought of cruising.

So, we turned our eyes towards Canada.

Yes – that other Commonwealth country that insists that they speak differently to us and US(A).

Not ‘just’ Canada; but the EASTERN part of Canada…the part that was still toying with succession ideas….and French speaking. About as close to going back to Europe without actually getting there!

We mentioned the trip to my parents…and my mum was really keen to come along; dad didn’t like the idea of all that touring. In the end, mum told me she was in and dad was staying home.

So….here are the Disclaimers:
1. Pictures have been taken by both DH and myself, in the days before I knew how to spell dSLR; so I consider them to be real holiday snaps.
2. Pictures are taken from Point and Shoot cameras that have single digit megapixel capability only. No correspondence will be entered into regarding the quality or lack there of.
3. Believe it or not….there is NO food porn. I appreciate that I’ve already lost a number of you with this statement….what can I say? It was 2007 afterall!
4. There will be gaps in my swiss cheese memory. What can I say? Again…it was 2007.
5. My mother came along on this trip. I will not be posting any pictures that include her; but she will probably be referenced in the TR.

ps. I have no idea how this TR is going to turn out....:rolleyes1

We start in….where else….San Francisco

Those eagled eyed amoung you will note that we are NOT flying United nor Qantas. We are indeed on an Air New Zealand long-haul ticket. Service was good and I have no hesitation in flying with them again (although when I was in a plane that got struck by lightning - it was an ANZ flight).

P6160001.jpg

We always seem to start in San Francisco; but DH did have a week’s worth of work meetings to attend.

Here are some of the things that we got up to whilst DH was busy working.

One of the things I love most about San Francisco is all the different modes of transport that are available in the city. Here’s one that is a little bit off the beaten track.

P6180018.jpg

DS – in the time where he still loves his trains.

P6180019.jpg

We spent some time eating and shopping (at Stamford Mall)…

P6180030.jpg

P6190039.jpg

…and heading into the downtown area.

Union Square..

P6200048.jpg

Chinatown..

P6200051.jpg

Pier 39…

P6210071.jpg

P6210063.jpg

P6210066.jpg

(Mum - I think I need a toilet….)

P6210067.jpg

(REALLY!!)

P6210064.jpg

The fresh air is good for me…and I would hate to be on that Rock behind me today!

Did I mention that DS really loves the San Francisco transports?

P6210060.jpg

On this trip, we decided to head to Sausalito as my mum had never been there.

P6210074.jpg

I didn’t have any problems convincing DS nor my mum to jump on a ferry.

P6210077.jpg

..afterall, the views were pretty good that day.

P6210084.jpg

P6210081.jpg

P6210078.jpg

I do have pictures of Sausalito….but mum was in all of them.

There is a burger place in Sausalito; on the right hand side of where you get off the ferry. Burgers are out of this world but the service is so bad that most people visit the joint for the bad service. We were disappointed…our service was really good that day.

We also went shopping in the art galleries in Sausalito. I came home with an original watercolour of the San Francisco skyline.

It wasn’t all work for DH….they did let him out for good behaviour during this week.

usa006.jpg

My cousin lived near Alamo Square during this time, so we drove to go see the Square….(and her).

The Painted Ladies ….

usa017.jpg

(no, I'm NOT referring to my cousin!!)

More Victorian architecture in the area.

usa018.jpg

We had dinner with her and her boyfriend before heading back to their apartment. I believe DS took these pictures…

So now I find myself hungry, don't get any food to look at but have another TR to read? Just great.

Wow great photos...what a beautiful place :) Look forward to reading more!

Cool! Bummer about the lack of food porn, but I can live with that!

Was wondering how you were going to cope without a TR or PTR to write...:lmao:

You've got me drawn in! Looking forward for more!

YAY! The gang's all here! Thanks for reading. :goodvibes

All and more are WELCOMED!

Toronto – On a Clear Day, you can (almost) see Forever!

We flew out of SFO on United. I think it was a mid/late morning flight out on a Saturday but I know with the change in time zones, we got into Toronto in the evening. I think my less than favourable view of the United service started on this trip. We had purchased our tickets as International travelers and for some reason, their electronic ticketing system could not cope with the tickets printed out in Australia…..their counter staff didn’t cope any better either.

P6240115.jpg

We hired a car out of Toronto airport and with the time needed to collect our bags and pick up the car, coupled with the late evening arrival time, we opted to stay near the airport rather than in the downtown Toronto area. We found a Marriott Courtyard in Missassuaga and we all crashed for the night. My swiss cheese memory remembers having pizza for dinner that night.

The next morning, we decided to spend time in downtown Toronto. Here’s what we saw.

With a car to worry about, we needed to park somewhere. DH and I must have decided to take a picture of where we parked so that we could find our way back there if needed.

usa051.jpg

It was still rather early in the morning and the city was still waking up….

usa045.jpg

…some....were still sleeping in (I was very upset to see this).

usa049.jpg

I remember DS being rather moved by this guy. The street car proved to be a welcome diversion and DS wanted to go on a ride.

usa050.jpg

We convinced him to walk instead, with the promise of a ride - later.

Toronto prides itself on its art and we loved seeing some of the street art, all within 10 minutes of us parking!

usa047.jpg

usa058.jpg

usa059.jpg

usa060.jpg

The Toronto skyline is much like any big city in the world…with one key distinguishing feature….

usa054.jpg

The CN tower.

We walked towards the tower and eventually found some life in the streets….

The people here were selling tours or city pass type tickets…

…this is an amphibious vehicle…otherwise ubiquitously known as a “Duck tour”.

usa061.jpg

We opted to purchase a ticket that provided us with a significant discount to visit the top of the CN tower and another attraction. We could have added the Duck tour; but we weren’t sure that time allowed us to do all 3.

Up close, the CN tower is impressive.

usa089.jpg

…and the entry has more of that street art….

usa063.jpg

(Continued from Previous Post)

With out tickets in hand, we headed up to the top where the views were pretty impressive. Toronto is located on Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, and on a clear day, you can almost see forever. Somewhere out there, on the other side, is Niagara Falls….and upstate New York.

usa072.jpg

usa073.jpg

usa076.jpg

usa078.jpg

There is a glass floor at the top of the CN Tower…

P6250120.jpg

P6250122.jpg

usa080.jpg

(Look Ma! No Hands!)

P6250119.jpg

You can see straight down….

usa084.jpg

(Who needs ToT??)

Our ticket included a walk round the Observation deck…

usa086.jpg

usa087.jpg

(Look Ma! I can use my hands here!)

….and after a walk round the gift store, we headed on out…where there were a few more people out and about.

usa090.jpg

We took a close look at that water feature we saw from the top.

usa091.jpg

(Sure looks a lot bigger from down here than up there.)

We still had another activity to do…so we walked over to where we needed to go. The views were pretty good from there of that Tower.

usa097.jpg

We were headed out towards Toronto Island and got to the waterfront for our ride out.

usa094.jpg

Which boat was it going to be?

usa099.jpg

usa100.jpg

I think DH was secretly hoping this was our ride.

usa102.jpg

Wait for it….

usa103.jpg

Yup! That’s it.

usa104.jpg

(Continued in Next Post)

(Continued from Previous Post)

We headed on board the Miz Kim and got our seats, near the front. At this stage, DS must have grabbed the cameras….because….

usa122.jpg

…neither DH nor I could have taken this shot.

We also seem to have gotten a whole heap of pictures of DS' new Jibbitz that we picked up at the gift stores….

usa111.jpg

.…plus this great shot of the view looking out of the boat…

usa125.jpg

….some of the wonderful ambience on board…

usa127.jpg

usa128.jpg

…and a lovely bahookie shot that I would have been proud to call my own.

usa121.jpg

But it wasn’t all lost…I found this one in the collection. Sure shows what a pretty city Toronto is on the Lake.

P6250128.jpg

We headed out towards our destination…

usa129.jpg

…where we disembarked and walked around to take a look-see.

usa133.jpg

usa135.jpg

We were very taken with Toronto Island, particularly with a 7 year old in tow….

…because….

usa136.jpg

…after money changed hands, we went on a couple of the hair raising rides on the island…

usa142.jpg

usa140.jpg

(DisneyWorld eat your heart out!)

DS was clearly scared of losing his crocs….and new jibbitz…so he opted to play it safe.

usa146.jpg

There seemed to be lots to do on Toronto Island.

usa145.jpg

usa149.jpg

Enjoy this shot…it’s one of the super rare shots that involve food in this set of holiday snaps!

usa152.jpg

And then it was time to head back…where DS clearly got behind the camera again.

usa157.jpg

(Continued in Next Post)

(Continued from Previous Post)

By this stage, we were all starving and we decided to go check out Chinatown.

usa159.jpg

We got on the street car for that promised ride…

usa165.jpg

….and got off at the appropriate stop.

usa166.jpg

usa167.jpg

I figure this must have been DH behind the camera.

usa168.jpg

(What I wouldn’t give for my bahookie to be that size again!!)

As expected, we found our cheap eats in Chinatown.

usa169.jpg

It was then time for us to get on our bikes and head on out so that we didn’t get too behind in our schedule.

usa172.jpg

(I suspect this was taken by me.)

Time was definitely marching on!

usa173.jpg

With the earlier shot of the parking lot, we managed to make our way back...and had a minor heart attack....it was not easy to get back into the car parking lot.
We eventually had to knock on the door of the office building and convince the security guard on duty to let us in...and show us how to get down to the car parking lot!

Hey, I can see my house from there!

Just kidding...but too bad we didn't know eachother back then. Niagara Falls is about 20 minutes from our house....we could have shown you around.

Anyways...I'm joining along....

I have not been to Toronto and so I'm enjoying seeing it through your eyes. Love the photo of you and DH! And how you managed to get to the Chinatown! :thumbsup2
