Dis Dad's Geek Thread

Yeah, I resemble that remark...

I'm still laughing over the JLAntarctica reference in the other thread...

Got me thinking...back in the late 80's or early 90's they started a comic called "Justice League" no JLA...just JL.

Anyway I loved this one...especially the combo of the Blue Beetle and Booster Gold...those 2 cracked me up. Batman and the Martian Manhunter were always left speechless by there antic...

oh Beverly... :rotfl2: I'll have to dig thru my old comics and see if I can find those.

Count me in on the comic fandom - probably tied 1 and 1a with my WDW fandom.

I am the co-host of the Doughnuts and Top Cow Podcast, which is on iTunes or available as part of the Comic Book Noise family of podcasts. We spend the first 5 minutes talking about tasty donuts and then the next 20 minutes talking about tasty Top Cow books.

Isn't Top Cow Eric Larson line?

Isn't Top Cow Eric Larson line?

Kind of . . . Top Cow is part of the Image Comics group (where Larson was Publisher until recently), and this is actually Marc Silvestri's line. Started with Cyberforce and most well known with Witchblade and the Darkness.

It fell into a bad rap as a T&A line of books in the late 90s, but it has been terrific and story-driven over the last few years, thanks mainly to Ron Marz's run on Witchblade. The artwork has been gorgeous, and the books have moved away from being "eye candy." I'd put them up next to anything Marvel or DC is putting out now.

(I do read other stuff, too . . . pull list includes Shield, Journey into Mystery, Batman Inc., Batgirl, Superboy, Sweet Tooth, Echo, Rasl, Warlord of Mars, Birds of Prey, and Wonder Woman - along with all Top Cow books)

After posting, I logged off to drive home, and while in the car I remembered it was Marc's line. Thanks for the update.
I haven't bought comics since I left Diamond over 10 years ago, I get my comic geek from TV and Movies and Wikipedia. Are all the titles you listed on your pull list being published now?

Well, I have a huge Transformer collection. Generation 1 only.

Then there is my Star Wars obsession. We actually went to SWW 5 years in a row. And we are now missing our third straight this year. I'm not happy about that.

Yep, these are all monthlies coming out now. As Previews continues to decline, Diamond has a fairly good website that lists the week's releases. Sure is easier to keep track now than when I was a kid!

So . . . . how'd you like Thor, by the way?

Thor is tomorrow. I thought Superboy was dead (again). Which Superboy is he?

Yeah, the Superboy mess. Kind of "same as it ever was" with continuity over at DC. This is the Conner Kent Superboy - brought back to life again by Brainiac 5 in the 31st century and then ported back to "our" time where he lives with Ma and Pa Kent.

I am not crazy about that aspect of things, but I am getting Superboy because the title is being written by Jeff Lemire, who is one of my favorite creators right now. He did the Essex County trilogy with Top Shelf, and it landed him some DC work. Sweet Tooth is a Vertigo title that he writes and draws, Superboy is being written by him. Mainly, I'm supporting Lemire.

Nobody can stay dead in comics. Except Uncle Ben, I guess. Everybody else keeps coming back!

Previews is always a fun part of the month. It has been getting thinner (as Diamond has shifted its minimums), but it's still fun to flip through. Why, do you think, haven't they gone to web-only and have stuck to the print model at about $6 an issue?

I stopped buying completely after the first child was born, as money was needed for other things, I tried to follow as best I could through the internet and Wizard Magazine. I dropped it a couple of years ago after the quality of it went downhill, and rely on the internet only. I'd like to pick up some trades now and then, once things get better around here (not that it slows down Disney Trips mind you)...
