Hey Y'all! I hope this doesn't make me sound stupid...

I am a photographer and have been for over 7 years. But I don't hardly know the first thing about exif data (well, besides how to view my photos exif data). I know that exif data follows a photo where ever it goes (except after being printed :lmao:)

How can you view exif data of photos by right clicking on them? Do you HAVE TO HAVE a program? I had a free program on my other laptop but it didn't show every photos exif data. What am I missing? :confused3 Thanks!

There are many different EXIF viewing programs out there. I think there are a few that plug into your Web browser and you can view the EXIF data by clicking a button.

I use a Web page created by Jeffrey Friedl (who also creates plug-in programs for Lightroom) to view EXIF data for online photos: http://regex.info/exif.cgi

I right-click a photo, copy the URL of the photo, then paste the URL into that Web page. There's a whole bunch of EXIF data that shows up.

Sometimes, you might not see EXIF data on every single photo. That's usually because the photographer may have chosen NOT to display the EXIF data for a photo. SmugMug and Flickr, for example, allow users to not show off the EXIF data for their photos.

Sometimes....after you edit an image.....EXIF data can be lost.

What computer are you doing this on?

On Windows Vista, you can see the exif data along the bottom of the folder when you are viewing the images.

The easiest way to view the EXIF data is to right click on the photo. Then hit "Properties" It is usually in the "details" tab (using Vista or 7). If you pan down you can pick out the info from there. If it is not there then you might have wiped the data by accident when editing. Some programs will clear it out if you save over the top. But to view is you should just be able to under windows explorer. I am sure it would be similar on the Mac.

Thanks!! I will check that program out. The one I had before had something to do with a Panda??
I'm mainly referring to facebook images...

I guess I should have clarified... I'm not looking for MY exif data.. I'm looking for other photo's exif data.

When I right click on photos from facebook then choose properties it only has one tab. It just has things like size, type, protocol, deminsions, created etc. If I right clikc and save it and do properties from where I saved it, it doesn't have ANY exif datat listed.

I didn't realize earlier that you were referring to EXIF data from pictures on Facebook.

I did a quick Google search "facebook pictures exif", and looks like Facebook automatically strips all images of their EXIF data. It's apparently a known problem that some photographers don't like.

I have a feeling that's probably why you aren't seeing EXIF data from images on Facebook.

I am not sure but who ever is posting to facebook (or Facebook) itself might be removing the exif data. Some people don't like the exif data to be displayed and they remove it before posting. I know lightroom can do that very easily. It is a checkbox within the export function and none is posted. With geo tagging being popular some don't want there location disclosed. Or it could just be a setting in facebook. Either way is should be there with a right click. It is nothing you are doing wrong.

singjenn, just a complement to all the words above: You may wish to remove EXIF for security/privacy purposes, to not disclosure technical details or sensitive information. Personally, I prefer EXIFCleaner by Superutils for that, and you're free to google for alternatives.

A proper image editing program will let you choose what exif data to retain when saving the photo. For basic viewing/cropping of JPGs, I use the free and fantastic Irfanview, which has checkboxes on the "Save As" dialog box to retain exif data or not.

For viewing online exif data, I use "Fxif", which is a free add-on for Firefox. Right-click a photo, then look at "Exif data". Piece o' cake. There is also Opanda's exif viewer, which I think includes an add-on for Firefox, Internet Explorer, and a standalone program. Since I only use Firefox, Fxif fit the bill nicely.

Facebook does strip out all the exif data, probably to save bandwidth. It's not a big difference in size, but it adds up for then when serving up millions of images... Flickr is the same way (much to my annoyance); they strip the exif data also.

Note that the exif data is distinct from iptc data, which includes keywords, copyrights, etc.

I use Opanda's IExif. It's free, easy to install and use. Right-click and if there is data it is shown in a nice format. Opanda.com.
