Proving the Critics Wrong: Taking our 18 month old to WDW for 10 Days! Update- Chapt

Let me first start off by saying I completely disagree with those who say not to bring babies/toddlers to WDW. So even before DH and I got pregnant we knew we were bringing our children back at all ages! My goal is to eventually go to Disney every year and stay at every resort at least once. So when I asked DH if we could take our DD in 2011, he knew he couldn’t say no!

Originally this trip was supposed to be a Grand Gathering with DH’s family (his mom, dad, two sisters and their boyfriends) we had booked reservations in Aug for 5 nights at Pop then onto the Disney Dream for a cruise. Then DH’s sister tells us she’s engaged and they are getting married in June of 2011, so they aren’t going on the trip because they can’t afford both. So DH’s parents tell us they aren’t going now either because of the wedding! Needless to say we are slightly annoyed, OK more than slightly, but what can we do? Now since DH’s parents aren’t going DH’s other sister can’t go because they were paying for her (since she’s in college). So that left DH and I on our own with our DD.

There was NO WAY IN H*** I was missing my trip, we didn’t get to go in 09 because money was too tight after having DD. So we decided to just do Disney and skip the cruise (saving us a TON of money) but still a bummer. So on came the plan, 8 nights at WDW staying at POP with our DD who will be 18months at the time.

So here’s some background info:
Me 24- I will be turning 25 two days before our trip. I am a stay at home mom and I plan on getting into the real estate world as soon as we have saved enough for the board of realtors fee’s. I have my bachelors degree in Human Ecology (nobody knows what that is) and I come from a long background in sales, customer service and banking. I wasn’t hooked on Disney until our Honeymoon in Dec 08! On my first trip to WDW with DH and his family (DisneyBoyFriend then)in 07, we stayed off site and hated it! We missed more than ¾ of WDW and we were there for 8 full days! It was a disaster. So I convinced Dh to go back for our Honeymoon, booking a land/sea on the Disney Wonder. We stayed at All Star music for 2 nights then moved to the Poly then the cruise. We fell in love! The service, the atmosphere, everything. We finally experienced the real WDW! So now in my free time I DIS, plan our trips and spend time with my monkey!

DH 23- Works as a computer programmer for a robotics company. (sounds cool doesn’t it?) it is, he loves his job. He is the most loving, caring, wonderful husband and father ever. He’s the one with the patience in our house, but would be lost if he ever needed to pay a bill! (yup that’s what you get when you meet your husband at 16 and he never learns to do things for himself)! But I wouldn’t trade him! He is slowly working into my obsession with Disney, he truly see’s the magic when we are there, and how de-stressed I am while I’m there! Oh and WDW is the ONLY place DH will take a nap, no joke!

DH and I on our Honeymoon in 2008

(Shhhh, I just noticed how young DH looks, he doesn’t look that way any more)

DD 14months- She will hit her 18mo mark the day we leave for WDW. DD’s stuffie is Pluto, she loves Mickey, Minnie, Pooh and Tigger! I have brainwashed her into loving Disney! She is working on two molars right now, so she has been a terror, Poor thing.

From her 1st birthday party:

Our trip: We planned 8 nights 9 days at Pop Century, with park hoppers. We still haven’t booked airfare, I am hoping for a DING. Our plan was to fly from Albany to Orlando on Saturday Sept 10th arriving around Noon and leave Sunday Sept 18th on the late flight, 6ish I think. Well as the prices went up, I conviced DH to take a ½ day at work and fly out Fri afternoon around 3 so arriving around 6 at MCO. WHOO HOO! Extra night at Disney. So I added a room-only for Fri with the Summer 20% code. So we are up to 9 nights and 10 days at WDW!

Special Events:
We are doing MNSSHP on Sept 13th
DD is getting her first hair cut at the Harmony Barber Shop
If something opens up I would love to do the WISHES dessert party, but it's all booked up

So on our 9 night trip to WDW there are a few things I plan to prove the critics wrong on: Hence the title.
1- WDW IS FOR BABIES
2- Toddlers can and do like Face and Stuffed Characters
3- We can still eat at Table Service locations with a toddler
4-My expensive stroller WON’T get stolen (ok that one is for me)

Since DD was born (ok 6 weeks old) we have been taking her to restaurants, she has met Santa and the Easter bunny and not had one single problem. And I must add we eat out a ton, at least 2-3 times a week. So she gets tons of practice. The 1 and only time DD has had a fit in a restaurant DH took her outside till she calmed down then came back in. Perfect angel after that. We do use distraction things, crayons, toys, anything safe we can find to play with. She is also such a HAM, she loves to wave and say “HI” to everyone. She just soaks up the attention.

1- I have been trying to take DD for tons of walks in her stroller, hopefully she will learn to fall asleep in it!
2- We always take DD out to eat –Check!
3- On June 25th we are taking DD to our local Six Flags for the day to get her used to the theme park atmosphere
4-While DD did GREAT with the Easter bunny and Santa we plan to take her to Chucky Cheese before Sept to test out the characters one more time.
5-We are working on cutting back her use of that annoying pacifier! God I hate that thing! I know she will still need it at night and when she’s teething but I don’t think she needs it as much as she is allowed to now.
6- (A personal one but this will come up later in my pre-trip report) Getting DD into her own room! She still sleeps in her crib in our room and on some nights if she wakes up screaming, in our bed also.

Now onto Disney Specific Planning…

I ordered 2-100 Disney Gift cards from our CDPHP (health Insurance) life points program, we earn points = to $ for doing/staying healthy. I plan to use one of these for our MNSSHP tix.

I have been blowing up my Disney Visa card (DH uses about 100 in gas a week, commuting back and forth to work 5 days a week) plus any little things we use the DV for then pay it off each month. I have about $100 worth of points there.

I am also putting away $10 a week for Cash at Disney, should end up at about $300 for the trip. That will be tip money for bus drivers, bell hops/luggage and mousekeeping.

I love the dollar sections at Target! I always pick up things there. I saved a few things for our trip and need to start looking for toys for DD to keep her occupied on the flight/in line/ at dinner. I did get her a magnadoodle for her Easter basket (a cheap $2) one from target. I’m not sure what other things would be good for an 18month old.

I have started collecting things for our trip, so far I have,
Qt. baggies for clothing for DD and food
Mini packages of tissues
A few packs of Clorox wipes
Pacifier wipes
A few cheap ponchos (us and to cover the stroller)
We did purchase a rain cover specifically for our stroller, but I wanted a few ponchos JIC.
Toothbrushes w/toothpaste
a set of travel size shampoo containers
bodyglide (need more tho)

sweet i'm in...I started bringing my kids when they were babies :) and I'm a single mom so imagine how crazy it is ...but I wouldn't have it any other way!! cant wait to hear more!

what I did with my lil ones..is I did everything MICKEY MOUSE/MINNIE MOUSE..even the princesses and other face characters (those are the ones my kids really don't care for)...my little one just turned 1 and he sees mickey mouse anything and he starts clapping...yes I train them well :)

Thanks for joining! I can't imagin being a single mom and taking even one child to WDW so :thumbsup2:thumbsup2 to you!

We plan to spend tons of time with the Fab5 crew and see how DD does with the princessess. We LOVE Mickey mouse Clubhouse and Handy manny, when DD see's Mickey she gets SOOO excited! We have a large mickey, pooh and tigger and a smaller pluto (her lovie) and minnie, she can identify each by name! She likes to pat Tigger and Pooh on the nose! :goodvibes

Yay! We will be going the same time! I have been searching for cheap flights. I have the 10th-18th scheduled, but it looks like right now the 10-17th will be the cheapest. Its killing me to lose a day though. Also, we will be attending MNSSHP on the 16th.

Do you have any days scheduled yet? I have been looking at TGM and its rough picking a MK day since its basically going to be either expect it to be busier or pick a day that MK closes early and no wishes :(

Oh and your DD is beautiful!

:cool1: for another September traveler! and Thank you, we love our little Monkey, we are very blessed, especially since she is a wonderful baby!

SouthWest is the cheapest here, no Jetblue (we would have to drive about 3 hrs to get JB out of Burlington VT) and everyone else flyign out of ALB doesn't fly non-stop and that is a MUST for us! Have you looked at trying the 9th-17th? thursday flights tend to be cheaper, then you wont lose the day!:) I know Disney had no problem trying to switch my dates, I had called to see if I could add the 9th as part of our package, but said "NO THANKS" when they told me it would be another $250 :scared1::eek::scared1::eek: I will stick with my $89 room-only for the one night!

I have my WHOLE itinerary set! I have had it done since Feb! Made ADR's in March and just play around with things on occasion! According to Tourning Plans AKA Lines the MK is supposed to be
Sat- 0.1/10
Sun-1.9/10 EVE EMH
Mon-4.9/10
Tues-0.2/10 MNSSHP
Wed-2.9/10
Thur-3.1/10 MORN EMH Close at 6pm
Fri-0.5/10 MNSSHP
Sat-1.9/10
Sun-3.8/10

Do you have park hoppers? If you do, don't worry then, hit MK in the AM and when it gets busy leave, then on another night hop back and see wishes!

We have been in Sept/Oct before and I promise lines were wonderful! I wouldn't worry about the 1.9 crowds!:thumbsup2

I will post my plan as soon as I can!

Saturday there was a huge baby rummage sale at a local event venue, I figured I would stop by I picked up some great things! I spent a total of $60. I bought, a baby harness buddy (a pink poodle), a baby flight vest (one of those things for lap babies), a Graco high chair (the kind that attaches to the side of the table), a silly pins bowling game, a bunch of Winnie the Pooh VHS’s, and these:

I know! How awesome! I picked up everything I could find that was DISNEY! DH’s sister bought two Pooh framed pictures and a Disney Princess game (I’m sure the game) for DD!

I also purchased our MNSSHP tickets today! I tried to online last week, but it wouldn’t let me use a Disney gift card to pay, so today, while I was on the phone with them making DD’s first hair cut apt, I was able to purchase them too! And so I made DD’s first hair cut appointment too!

I love MNSSHP...

I'm sure you've thought of costumes for the baby...just keep in mind sept is still HOTTT here...lol .

and you probably know but you can get into MK at 4pm on MNSSHP ticket. so don't use a park ticket for that day...just a suggestion (i couldn't make sense of your itinerary? )

I also packed a small cooler for my kids...snacks/water/fruit

did you know there are baby centers in all 4 parks..just in case you didn't:

MK"s baby center is by the crystal palace. THere's a nursing mother's room. There's changing tables, a unisex bathroom and a small room with high chairs and tables and a movie plays so you can feed the kids. THey also have a kitchen, sink, microwave and water cooler..all baby centers sell things you might need too, diapers, formula, onesiese, bottles etc

Animal Kingdom's baby center is huge and it is closer to africa. I love theirs the most. They have it all there.

DHS is very small..(in guest services area).but has 2 changing tables, a childs bathroom, and a microwave and sink, mother's room and couple of chairs to sit in.

Epcots is a nice size too. Its over by the old building..gosh whats it called...its to the left of the bridge by the entrance to WS..close to Mexico.

But we used the centers to cool off in and if the kids fell asleep in the stroller. I would go inside and just sit in the cool for awhile. Also I would refill my water bottles with water.

Also I love character interactions so like I know waiting in long lines is hard with little ones especially in some places you cannot bring the stroller...so this is what I always do...

IF i'm going to MK (get the fast passes to the princesses, and mickey). But the earlier you go the better chance you got of seeing Daisy, Pluto and a couple of the characters over in the Town Square area without a long wait. Fairy Godmother is usually behind the Castle. Princess Tiana/Prince Naveen are in the Gazebo by the christmas store. this might be a long line no matter. And of course Rapunzel is to the right of the castle and she's there with Flynn Rider (Eugene).

But if you are looking for Pooh Tigger Eeyore..I'm telling you the fastest line is in Animal Kingdom..I was just there the other day and I think we waited maybe 10 minutes. Also AK has Flik but you have to go before 3 (he's over between asia and africa) . The baby might not get scared of Turk so if that's an interest she's over in that area too before 3p. King louie too. The Camp Mickey Minnie section is a must do (Fab 5) but again those lines are long and you have to wait in separate lines for each..I would suggest get a pic with your fave character here and maybe skip the others..Chip and Dale & Thumper and his girlfriend are normally around here..oh and pocahontas (if she's not there in sept then she's in rafiki's planet) and Meeko, Koda, and Keenya? i can't remember his name, the older brother bear. Stitch and Lilo is a short line you can't miss them, they'll be at entrace of camp mickey and minnie. Pluto & Goofy are in dinoland. Oh I almost forgot the earlier you get to AK the better too, because Timon, Baloo, Bre'r Bear Bre'r Rabbit are outside of the main entrance to the park!!! and of course Rafiki and jiminy cricket is at Rafiki's Planet Watch.

Okay so if you go to Epcot...here's where I really do pics with Fab 5...there's one line for all of them! and its not that bad of a wait. Stitch and Daisy can be found in the main entrance..I get there early and we sometimes go and hang out with stitch!!! Princesses interactions are great at this park...Mulan in Japan! Belle & Beast in France, Aladdin and Jasmin in Morocco, Snow White Germany, Marie, Princess Aurora France. pooh tigger eeyore in UK (I don't like this one too much because we wait in a store).

DHS, well, I typically do the Handy Manny, Little Einsteins, after Playhouse Disney (or Disney Junior now). But They have fantasmic Mickey here (could sometimes be a long wait). Sully And Mike are quick lines. Woody is probably the same amount of wait time as MK. But in MK woody is with Jesse! (i forgot to mention that).

sorry for the long post..but I love taking my kids to see the characters, I can spend a whole day just taking pics with them.

did you have any restaurants lined up?

and I'm jealous you found such a cool lamp at a rummage sale!!!!

HOLY COW! Lol but I love the advice! and a few characters I didn't know about! that wasn't my itinerary it was a list of crowd levels for the days we will be there according to LINES.

MNSSHP: I have so many ideas on this one! I wanted to do a three group but DH isn't keen on the idea (i wanted to do like aladin, jasmine and aboo) :rotfl2: but maybe I will just dress up DD and have tye-dye mickey shirts for DH and I.

I most likely will bring a water bottle to the parks, with snacks (cherios, gold fish, granola bars) for DD. I don't mind paying extra in the park for things (I'd rather not carry around) But if we had more then one kid I might those items (even water) is pricey in the parks!

I am awear of the baby care center's, I think its a wonderful idea! I'm sure we will make use of these! and Epcot's is near the Oddessy building!;)

Characters: I booked us, Crystal Palace (so I don't plan on stopping for these guys in the parks, EXCEPT for on MNSSHP, gotta see the costumes)
Tusker House and Chef Mickeys (this should cover us there, except again for MNSSHP)
I also have the Disney Visa card so we will be doing the meet & Greet atleast once!

I will prob. FP the new mickey and princesses in MK, I don't think we will bother with the others in MK
Is Ariel anywheres? I would like to see her.

Chip & Dale and thumper would be neat! We plan to make a stop at Camp Mickey and Minnie, pocahontas :thumbsup2 and we do plan to hit rafiki's planet!

Mulan in Japan! Belle & Beast in France, Aladdin and Jasmin in Morocco, Snow White Germany, Marie, Princess Aurora France all a MUST!

And Handy Manny and Mike and Sully :thumbsup2

I'm not too worried if we miss some, I know we will be back in a few years. As long as she gets the Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto, Tigger, Pooh I will consider it a WIN :goodvibes (hence the booking of the ADR's) :cool1:

I do plan on heading back to Pop every afternoon for swimming and nap time. IF DD will fall asleep in her stroller and not be grumpy, I would like to spend at least one afternoon catching the MK parade at 3. Maybe we will get a few afternoons! I do PLAN PLAN PLAN, but when we get down there I am very flexible on everything, but I like having a game plan to roll with, they we can change things up as need be.

We have 8day PH tickets. We will use FP and Baby swap. I think we will FP rides like Buzz, Jungle cruise, TSM and use baby swap with Space Mt, RocknRoller Coaster.

We are attending the first party on Sept 13th.

I’m not sure on costumes yet, DH isn’t sure about dressing up as a family. But he did “OK” Mickey tye-dye shirts! But I am still working on costume ideas. I know we could all go as Pirates, but EVERYONE does that.

We plan on arriving around 4:00pm, walking through Adventure land to Pecos Bill’s for dinner, hitting Aladdin, Pirates, and maybe Jungle Cruise on our way. Depending on how long those rides and dinner takes, maybe hitting up Haunted Mansion then getting in line for the Characters/Ghosts. I would like to hit the 8:15 Parade in Liberty Square area, then find a spot for Hallowishes and see the 10:05 Villians show. I would like to do the Meet & Greet with some of the villains, but if we can’t I won’t cry, just another reason to come back!

My Must do’s for the party: Besides Hallowishes and the parade
1-Hitchhiking Ghost Pic
2-Ghost driving the coach pic
3-Pooh and Tigger Halloween Pic
4-Mickey & Minnie Halloween Pic
5-At least one dance party for DD (she loves to dance)

Just an FYI, I changed this plan as I was writing it out, we orginally were planning on getting to MK at 5, but realized that doesn't give us a lot fo time and DD will most likely want to eat at 5, rather than 6, plus dinner at 5=snack for me and DH popcorn::yummy!

I am loving reading this so far! We are going to be at the CSR Sep 17-24. We will also be bring our DS for his first visit. He will be 18 months. He will also be having his first haircut at Harmony Barber Shop!
My sister and BIL will be joining us! We are all so excited.

oooh crystal palace and tusker house are my faves!!!!
I love Puffed French toast! haven't been to TH before tho

:thumbsup2 for the first visit! and :thumbsup2 for the first hair cut! Did you make an apointment? While they aren't required it sure will cut down your wait time! CSR sounds exciting! Our orginal plan was to stay there, when we were having the grand gathering with DH's family, but when they flaked out on us we moved to Pop. I am excited for Pop, but will miss the Queen beds and hot tub at CSR!

I also had purchased a few VHS's from the giant baby sale I went to, got an orginal Snow White, the 2 Goofy movies, and 2 Winnie the Pooh and this
IMAG02471.jpg

I haven't see it so I'm making DH hook up the ol' VHS player this weekend so I can get excited! :cool1::cool1:

It's been a crazy few day's trying to get things ready and cleaned for DH's cousin to come visit next weekend and attend my SIL's bridal shower, that even tho she is furious at me right now (hasn't talked to me in 5 days) all because I wouldn't let her come over at 6pm, our dinner time and we were heading out to eat, to try on her wedding dress (sorry but feeding my hubby and baby are more important) I am making her a cupcake cake, baked ziti, mini muffins, and putting together her game prize bags.

On top of all that, I am working on making the "Sash" for my DD's flower girl dress, that SIL wanted, and let me tell you cutting a XL adult womens sash to fit a 15 month old and re-sewing it on a dress is HARD :headache:

Oh and DD has a neurologist apointment at 10am tomorrow :confused3 her right shoulder bows out if you pull her arms up over her head. We noticed it at her 12mo well baby visit and they refered us to a neurologist. The dr thinks she is either missing a muscle or lacks muscle strength to keep the bone down :sad2: So hopefully everything will go good tomorrow!

well good luck on the dr appt. I always was a nervous wreck when we had totake my first son to the neurologist...no issues as of now but it was precautionary I guess.

im joining in! i hope the dr apt goes well. i love your title, i got it all the time why i was taking my baby to disney. he went for his 1st bday last oct and to mnsshp. i loved it and i noticed you used the same decorations as he did at his party but with mickey! I told people thats why he is free under 3 cause he wont remember and we will go to as many places as we can while he is free because im a single mom and need to save. I took him to disney a few months after his first visit in dec all alone and i loved it. we go back twice this year. so just have fun and enjoy the time with your little one while shes young which i know you will.

Thank you! It went well. Basically told us what we had hoped to hear. She needs to do some physical therapy but nothing serious. In fact it has largely corrected itself in the past 2 months! :cool1: I agree with the nervousness, but it's always better to be safe then sorry. My major concern was how it could affect her has she gets older, I didn't want her to be limited on things like sports.

Thank you also it did! and WELCOME! I really thought hard about the title, I feel very strongly about being able to enjoy Disney at any age and there are things I don't remember that i did when I was 15, except in pictures or stories, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy them!!!!!:) That's so special to get to go on his birthday! We would be there for mine, but we would miss MNSSHP, so I made the choice to do MNSSHP and pass up my birthday. We miss it by 2 days! :thumbsup2 to you for being a single mom and still finding ways to do things with your baby and enjoy them!
