Just wondered how this area is looking now?

I know that a lot of places shut down when the recession hit.

Have shops etc reopened now? Has it become a bit safer?

I haven't been to Orlando for 3 years so just trying to get an insight as to what to expect when I visit.

which part of the 192?

Some of it is, well, in need of a spruce. This is mainly the area further east.

However the areas close to WDW are doing OK and the 192 west has lots of new restaurants and shops in the area.

192 will never be what it was, back in the olden days before Disney had dozens of hotels or the Lake Buena Vista or International Drive areas were full of hotels 192 was where people stayed. There are very few good hotels left and as was said by a PP the further east you go away from Disney the worse it gets.I think even though it will never be what it was it can improve, the economy definitely has not gotten better to the point where you see improvements,in fact I actually take 192 from the turnpike every time I go to the parks and I just see more things closed every day, there are things opening up,like the indoor surfing place that recently opened up but other things like that new country bar in the old haunted castle just doesn't seem to fit,if they were to have torn down the castle building and built a nice new building it would improve the look and help the street but a country bar in a haunted castle building is just not helping it.

We stayed in Windsor Hills in November and drove 192nd daily up to World Center Drive. Driving on 192nd I would have to say I never felt unsafe driving it regardless the time of day or night. There was never anything that looked appealing enough to stop in. There are some family style restaurants, but they looked kind of gimmicky. The one I'm thinking of is the Chinese Buffet. It has a large electronic billboard advertising kids eat free. Then there's a magic shop with a large sorcerer built into the top of the building. Again, it looked really cheesy and not really something I would want to spend my time or money in. As for hotels, I didn't see one I would consider staying at. HTH

You were still close to the Disney area, keep going east on 192 past 535 and you'll see what we're talking about. The area near World Dr. to the east and west including the entrance to Celebration is still fairly OK with many hotels that are getting older but for the most part still not horrible, there's even some hotels like the Comfort Suites Maingate east near Old Town that I would highly suggest to anyone, but what we're talking about is comparing 192 to what it used to be in the 80's,things now are getting old,the further east you go you can't even find any worthwhile hotels or restaurants and crime is up as well.

The closer you are to I4/WDW property, the nicer 192 is. IMO, once you get east of Ponciana, it gets seedy.

I saw restaurant.com has a location on Irlo Bronson...is this in the ok or seedy part...are we better off with one of the other locations?

you also have to be careful of near US 27 - or you did.

some shootings have happen in that area. (this is past Orange Lake)

although it does seem to have improved on my last trip.

When was this please -I have been staying this end for 13 nyears and I can't remember any shootings here ?The west end is less developed but the opening of restaurants such as Applebess,Millers Bahama Breeze and Sweet Tomatoes as well as Supertarget and other small shops shows the area is up and coming.

We always stay on the west end of 192 (west of Disney) and have had no problems and don't consider it seedy. Along 192 to 27 and then up and down 27 is ok to us. You won't see luxurious hotels and outlet malls but there's lots of family type restaurants and hotels, Target and a couple of Publix grocery stores mini golf etc. There are a few of the "T shirt shops" along here but not many. There are many vacation rental subdivisions just off 192 less than a half mile and also up and down 27. Most of the businesses and restaurants in the area are targeted toward everyday living for those on vacation. If you want outlet malls or higher end shopping then you have to go off I -4 to the Premium Outlets, or to Florida Mall and Mall at Millenia etc.

I was wondering the same thing. I have stayed on 27 and really like that area. We went to the Super Target down here several times on our last trip and we thought it was awesome. It was super clean and not crowded. It was 100 times better than any Wal Mart we have been to anywhere in the area.

? I have lived within an hour to this area for many years. Other that what is on 27 & 192 or 27 & I4 this area is po-dunk. Not much happening here. If there was a shooting, I am thinking it was an isolated incident or two. Certainly nothing that would have to do with tourists.

Sweet Tomatoes? ... on the 192?:confused3

Please tell.

Where the 429 crosses over 192 there is an area to the suth called Rolling Oaks Common. Here you will find Target, and Sweet Tomatoes as well as Olive Grden and Longhorn .Opposite you have Millers Ale House and Applebees.

Fantastic. When we were last there (August 2010) there was an Olive Garden and a Longhorn beside the Target. Fantastic to hear of Applebees, Miller Ale House and our absolute favourite Sweet Tomatoes. :woohoo: We were really pleased when the one opened at the Crossroads and that saved us the trek down to Kirkmann Road. We usually stay in the Formosa Gardens area so this will be even better. :yay:

when I was staying at Orange Lake.

2003 maybe?

was told HERE that area was not safe. was considering it for another trip - since I love US 27.

trying to find something on or near US 27 now for my home.

Spiceycat hopefully we have gone some way to convince you that the area west of 192 /27 is safe and a great place for access to the parks and the coasts. If you need help finding a home in the area give me a shout.

Hi Jan, where the heck is STomatoes by the Target/
We just got back from our stay in Sunset Lakes and was in that area a lot to shop and never did see STomatoes. We kept going over to LBV to eat there!!!
