I have Canon Rebel XT with 18-55 kit lens

I would like to get another lens for my canon. What would the next step up canon or non-canon lens be for me? I really just use my camera for taking pictures of my kids and such. Something that could zoom in a bit more than the one I have would be nice. Any suggestions??

For our Canon friends, just a couple of questions. Do you have a budget for this lens? Are you looking for a variable aperture or constant aperture? Are you looking for an all-in-one? Just a few that I would ask. I'm sure if you provide a little more information, the Canon shooters should be able to give you some good direction.

Have you considered updating your camera body? This of course depends on your budget

Canon Rebels have come a long way since the XT. The newer models have a much larger range of usable ISO.The XT only went to 1600. The newer models have a very usable 3200, even 6400. And the new models come with a kit lens with Image stabilization now. And I believe the kit lenses currently in use get a much better review than the older ones.

Just something to think about. There are certainly lots of lens options available. It just depends on your budget and what your priorities are.

the 55-250IS is a good inexpensive choice (less than $200)

Assuming you prefer to stay with Canon branded lenses, the standard trilogy for starting out lenses for Canon seems to be the EF-S 18 -55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS; which is the lens I believe you have. Then the EF-S 55 - 250 mm f/4.0 - 5.6 IS; and the EF 50mm f/1.8.

What sorts of things do you shoot? Depending on your subjects and your style of photography, there may be other lenses (and bodies) more appropriate.

There are a lot of options and it really depends on how much you want to spend and how you like to shoot.

Definitely the 55-250 IS lens. It's nick named the nifty two fifty because the price is usually around $250. It's a great second lens especially when needing the extra zoom. Takes great shots as well. Stay away from the 75-300 lens as it doesn't perform as well (it's also cheaper) so don't be tempted.

As the owner of the Canon XT and the Canon 40D, I don't think you need to upgrade your camera. I still shoot with my XT - it takes wonderful pictures and is much lighter than the 40D. (I frankly have yet to feel the 40D takes better pictures than my XT. Maybe I got a bum camera).

Definitely a zoom lens is in order - especially as your kids get older and into sports. I have a Sigma 70-300 that does a decent job; not expensive. Of course, I've long salivated over a nice Canon L glass zoom...but I'm not shooting enough right now to justify a several thousand dollar lense for myself.
