Has anyone ever had Viral Myalgia? (virus in muscles)

My came home from school on Tuesday with a fever, eyes sunken in, slight cough, and looked awful. Dr. chalked it up to a virus. He stayed home all week. Friday morning he woke up, couldn't walk flat footed, said his calves hurt. Went back to doctor, sent for blood work, came back with abnormal muscle enzymes. So we are on day 3 of this. The doc. is supposed to call tomorrow to check on him and we'll go from there.

Has anyone experienced else this? How long did it last?

Oh, and now I'M sick, can't get out of bed, just feel horribly achey, can't talk and have a dry cough. I'm praying it doesn't spread to my legs or that my DD doesn't get it next :(

There is a virus going around where I work. On Mon. my lower back, hips and thighs were so sore it was hard to move. By Wed. night I was throwing up. I finally feel 100% today.

I hope you all feel better soon.

Yes, I have actually. Sometimes in kids after experiencing a virus, they will end up with these muscle pains-they can last a while. Hope everyone feels better soon!

Quite a while ago my son, then 3, had a virus, I think stomach, which ran it's course. On about the fourth day he woke up one morning and couldn't get out of bed, his back hurt too bad. He never complained and was in tears. I called the pediatrician in a panic, and that wise man told me the virus had probably settled in his back muscles. It lasted about three days and was especially painful when he first woke up but did completely resolve itself.
That was the first and last time I ever heard of it.
I hope he feels better soon.

Well, I'm happy to report that he is walking today without pain and I'm so happy! Thanks all :-)

I had a virus like this on Mother's Day several years ago. It felt like I had pulled EVERY single muscle in my body, literally every one. In addition, they started swelling, making my extremities tingle. I also had a very high (103) temp for the first 12 hours. I actually ended up in the ER (I never, ever go to the ER unless a bone is protruding or it's a life-threatening thing), because I was THAT sick.

Anyway, they ran bloodwork and everything looked good (ER doc wanted to rule out leukemia and low potassium). Then the nurse proceeds to come in and tell me I had lupus. :scared: She had it and just knew I did too! So I freaked, told the doctor. who said the nurse would be reprimanded for that, but she also told me I should see my internist to rule it out.

So the next day i go to my doctor, and he looked at me and said "You do NOT have lupus" (now a running joke in my family). But that I had a virus and it would go away, which it did. He did run a few prelim tests for lupus, like ANA, but all was normal. It was crazy, though. Never had a virus like that before, and hope I never do again.

My ten year old son came home from school yesterday in tears saying he couldnt move his arms or legs without being in a lot of pain, the doctor diagnosed him with virus in the muscles. i was really worried, so its good to find this site and know that he is going to get better quickly.:)

When my son was 3 he had those symptoms, and could only walk bow-legged because of the pain. He was sent for a lupus test which came back negative. The diagnosis was viral myalgia. He was fine in less than a week.

I hope he feels better quickly! Scary when they can't walk! My son hasn't had it again, thank goodness!

How awful...I'm glad he's better now!

I was so interested to read this thread. When my son was about 5, he had a cold, and suddenly one day he complained that his leg muscles hurt too much to walk. This was my super stoic son who never faked anything and rarely cried, but he was crying his eyes out and refused to move at all! I took him to the doctor's office and the NP told me that DS was faking it...that there was no way he could have that much pain from a cold, and that he didn't have anything else. I took DS home and would have taken him in for another opinion later but he was better in about 24 hours.
After reading this thread I think he must have had muscle myalgia!

Was wondering what ever came of it because we are experiencing the same problems right now with our son and i too now have the cough

It looks like he was fine the day after the OP posted. She wrote

Maybe she'll see this and report back, but this was back in February of 2009, so probably not.

I hope your son feels better soon. I just said a prayer for him.:grouphug:

Wow old thread!

I hope your son feels better! It passed quickly for us, and have never experienced anything like it since! Well other than typical aches and pains with the flu.

Yes! When my twins were about 14 months old one of them had a slight fever and rash. Very mild.

Well apparently I got it and it went into my muscles. I felt like EVERY single muscle in my body had been pulled, I ran an extremely high fever and my muscles actually swelled to the point that my extremities were numbing. It actually freaked me out so bad I went to the ER (this was a Sunday afternoon at the height of it) and they thought maybe I had lupus, so they sent me to my primary care doc on Monday.

Anyway he ran all kinds of tests and lupus was ruled out, he thinks I had a virus in my muscles. That is truly the sickest I have been in a long time. Just goes to show how a simple kid virus can knock an adult completely flat on their butt!

My son had this virus and then had transient (or toxic) synovitis as a side effect. The virus moved to his knee joints. He took alleve for a few days to alleviate the pain, and it ran it's course. Now, he has another virus and his knees hurt again. It tends to recur. That first virus seemed to really bother kids' muscles.
