Government shut down will affect you

This whole thing is a nightmare for so many people, while congress sits up there working on something that should have been taken care of 5 months ago. How many vacations did they have during that time? I know that they were on vacation just a couple of weeks ago! Insane. :headache: That should be against the law when they are working under a continuing resolution.:headache:

Yes, however people should realize that none of this is really budget related. It is all politically charged due to a shift in power in congress. Although it is true that they technically had 6 months to iron this out, the reality is that they only had 3 months with the current congress. Please don't construe this as blaming any one side, it is just that there is a "power struggle" whenever the balance of congress shifts away from the presidency.

Hey Neighbor :wave2: (Springfield buddy:goodvibes)! I have to agree with this.

Let's hope they don't take another vacation until Easter.

... a pox on both their houses...

Fiscal year 2011 began on October 1, 2010. This is when the budget should have already been in place. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Congress, the Senate and the Presidency all controlled by one party for about two years prior to October 1, 2010? They sure got through other controversial laws. Why not the budget?

OP here please let's not get into politics the purpose of this thread was to know how we are going to be affected with this.

I hope you are wrong. Like I said, DH will get paid anyway because he is working, but no back pay for furloughed workers will be like adding insult to injury.

A paid vacation for furloughed workers is the real insult. Private sector employees who get furloughed (and I'm one of them who have had it happen) get nothing except the option to file for unemployment. All you do is add to the perception that government workers are out of touch with reality and deserve zero sympathy.

I hope I'm wrong as well. It seems likely DH will be an excepted employee, so he'll be working and will get paid eventually. I just hope for the sake of all employees and their families that everyone will eventually get back pay. From the estimates I've read 800,000 workers could be furloughed. That can't be good for an economic recovery if they don't get paid.

I think that there will be a shutdown of approximately 1 week and emergency funding to pay active duty militiary will be passed.

I am a DoD contractor and our contract has been paid up through April so we will be working until at least the end of the month if it lasts that long. The military will still be here but it looks like the civilian employees will get the week off.

They are saying that the military will get paid because when the govt. shut down back in the 90's there were no issues with them getting paid. Same with social security checks.

not true for military. My son in law just got his notification yesterday. They will be paid throught the 8th on their check on the 15th and then nothing until the government "reopens". They will then receive their back pay.

Social security will be paid.

DH had a meeting Tuesday and they told him if they are furloughed he will not get back pay. He is full-time National Guard.

We were just notified by privatized military housing that they will not pull BAH if there is a shutdown but will wait until everything is settled and all are back paid before they collect. As for who's getting paid and who's not on active duty there is obviously confusion. Some have been notified my husband has not. I don't think the gov't knows any more then us. And the media just feeds the fire.

Hope everything works out for EVERYONE! :grouphug:

Everyone I try to talk to seems like they're afraid to talk about this, like if they don't talk about it it won't happen..... which is annoying and weird..... I even called our housing (privatized) and the manager was CLUELESS as to what would happen, and she is a AD Navy spouse as well.... they hadn't told her much of anything about what would happen. This would thing is so annoying, and I'm not sure my DH even knows whats going on! Bc of the nature of his job they don't give them 'distressing' news.... so they may not have told them! This whole thing is such a mess.... like will they give them their base pay, but not Family Separation pay or will we get it all?? And what about Hazard Duty pay?? EEsh.... this is annoying and stressful to say the least!!!

And you can get unemployment--we can't. So yeah, this is a lot harder on federal employees than it ever is on private sector. I think you are the one out of touch with reality here.

Lets not forget that these workers are also NOT ALLOWED to work anywhere else, not even volunteer during the furlough (government ethic rules), so no picking up a few bucks consulting or mowing the neighbor's lawn or cleaning houses.

I haven't heard anything from our privatized housing yet (We have Pinnacle) but I am hoping. I'm glad yours is doing this.

We probably have the same housing and the manager here said they would let us know tomorrow or monday whats going on :confused3 which may end up being too late for some people..... I wanted to know if we 'owe' $$$$$ for housing and our paycheck is #### will they take the whole housing allotment out of our paycheck leaving us with nothing?!?! :scared1:

Not trying to be insensitive but traffic will be nice and light in DC next week for a change

I agree. I hope no one thinks this is the average fed worker's fault that this is happening. My husband works hard making sure our money is not illegally laundered - which saves tax payers from losing money. He's not sitting on his butt doing nothing and collecting a pay check.
