Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant/Dining Help Thread

Here is my favorite counter service meal at WDW, the lighthouse sandwich at Columbia Harbour House. I dream about this sandwich.

I love this sandwich. I get it without the slaw for a vegan version - so yummy!! I sure wish they had an oil based slaw for us vegans, lol!

Here's the vegan Seared Marinated Tofu - With mango glaze, fresh vegetables and white rice, from Sci-Fi Dine In, It was really good and also gave me another idea with what to do with that bag of broccoli slaw I buy every so often.

Hello fellow vegetarians and hello vegans!

Just a quick question for all of you that have been to Sanaa.. I see that they offer rice pilaf.. Just wondering if anyone knows if the pilaf is vegetarian or if it is prepared with some sort of meat based stock.

What would 6 of your favorite Vegan friendly restaurants and why? My DH and I are going in Dec and I am somewhat new to the whole Vegan thing but I know there are so many things to be mindful of and honestly I am a bit overwhelmed planing our trip!!! I know WDW is amazing with food allergies because I have a DS with a wheat, egg, and dairy allergy. WDW was amazing with our options for him a year ago. I am just wondering do they treat Vegans with the same respect or should I tell a white lie and say I have allergies? My DH and I are going on our ten year anniversary trip by ourselves and I really do not want to be miserable about not having any choices. Thanks a ton!!!

You don't need to lie - Disney is great with vegans, at least at the sit-down restaurants.

I would say my favourites are:

1. Sanaa. They have a separate vegan menu. The food is Indian-African but very mildly spiced, we always ask for extra-spicy and that's what we get! Also, you get to enjoy looking at the animals while you eat - what could be better?

2. Jiko. They also have a vegan menu, but will make you dishes not on the menu if it's not too busy and you ask. I've had some great meals that way!

3. Boma. Buffet, but usually a good selection of vegan options. It was even better when TJ was still there.

4. Tusker House. It's like "Boma Lite," there is usually a section of vegetarian options and they will readily let you know what is vegan and what is not.

5. Kouzzina. While there isn't much vegan on the menu, we've had a couple of outstanding meals here, just by telling the chef to make us something good!

6. The restaurant in Mexico. (forgotten the name for the moment). They have a vegan menu and can make other dishes vegan if you ask. We also ask for extra spice here.

7. The Tangierine Cafe in Morocco. I like this better for vegan options than the Marrakesh restaurant, although it does lack the belly dancer.

But I've had some really good meals in other places, too, including Narcoosee's, California Grill, O'hana (when TJ was there, though, so it probably isn't as wonderful now), Le Cellier, The Wave, etc. Get the right chef and you'll have an amazing meal!

We get the veggie sandwich-no cheese and maybe no mayo (I can't remember exactly what is on it). Check out MelanieC's dining report. I believe she has a picture. When did you go to Earl? It disturbs me that you couldn't get anything vegan. They have been so helpful to me. Did they tell you something wasn't vegan?

FYI - I found out the the veggie burger at Fresh A-Peel (DTD, right next to Babycakes) is vegan if you ask for no cheese and no sauce.

Finally, on another vegan blog someone recently went to the Lotus Blossom Cafe in China at Epcot and got a mock meat stir fry (possibly seitan) with their choice of noodles or rice. I don't see that on the menu, so I assumed she asked for something vegan...

You can definately get something vegan at Earl of Sandwich. Trust me I hounded them until they found me someone who could help me. The veggie sandwich minus the dressing it comes with and cheese is vegan. I added the vinagrette dressing and it makes the most tasty sandwich. Its probably one of the things I'm most excited about having again. Do a search for my dining report last summer, I have several pictures of the sandwich. I love adding chips inside my sandwich too - Ooh I can't wait to go back in July

Those are the only two I've eaten at since becoming vegan, but I hear that 1900 Park Fare (CHef TJ is there now), Tusker House, O'Hana, California Grill and many more are very accomodating. Also Teppanyaki would be an awesome place to have a vegan meal - just let them know no butter and to cook yours first on a clean grill before cooking with meat and butter.

Fast food spots

There are so many good fast food vegan options. I had an awesome fried rice with tofu made for me at Tomorrowland Noodle Terrace, the lighthouse sandwich without slaw is great, black bean nachos no cheese or meat at the El Pirataya (names been changed now and not shure they serve nachos anymore).

The best vegan meal of the week (and better than all the merely vegetarian dishes we ate), this past week, was at Artist Point, a sweet potato gnocchi dish with roasted capers and roasted Brussels sprouts.

Does anyone know which vegetables are on the veggie flatbread at the Golden Oak outpost?

I'm allergic to mushrooms (and mangoes... which is rarely a problem except, apparently, at Disney lol!) and trying to put together a list of acceptable foods before I go next month. I would rather not wade through restaurant after restaurant looking through the allergy book, lol!

Also, can the tofu dish at Sci-Fi be done without the mango glaze?

I don't know about the flatbread, but I am quite sure they can do the tofu without the mango glaze. Just let them know about your allergy. I find that's one of the nice things about Disney - it's not like many restaurants, where all the dishes are pre-made somewhere else and frozen and basically reheated in the back, so they can't make any changes. At the sit-down restaurants, the Disney cooks are actually MAKING these meals, so they are usually quite willing to make changes (especially if it involves leaving out an ingredient rather than adding something - which is a problem if they don't have it).

Okay, awesome. I was hoping it would be workable as it's a glaze and not a marinade (I can see where a marinade would be a problem if they marinate a batch of tofu overnight or something.)

I'm thrilled that the burgers don't seem to be mushroom-based (although I will of course check,) but I'm trying to come up with some other alternatives as well. The TSes seem like they'll be fine, the CSes, perhaps more difficult. Darned random allergies, lol!
