London hotels (not necessarily budget)

Anybody know anything about London hotels? (I did also ask down on the UK board).

Heading to London. Alone. :) (There goes the disney trip for another year, but hopefully the rewards I'll earn will make the next trip less out of pocket).

So because I'm alone, I'm willing to spend more than I normally would to be in a better location (even though I'm a NY girl, I don't want to be walking around London alone at night, ya know).

Anyway, I'll probably be ending my nights at the theater in the West End (eeek, I'm giddy just saying that) so if anyone has any suggestions for a good place to stay I'd love to hear them. I'm making myself crazy!!!

Cheap is good, but "good value for the money and location" is better in this instance.

My current favorite London hotel is the Number Sixteen in South Kensington. Really close to the Tube, cute neighborhood with great restaurants, etc. It is NOT budget, though.

DD#2 is at Hotel Indigo Paddington, London Street 16, Paddington, London W2 1HL, even as we speak. I know it's not budget, but I don't know the rate as I paid for it with Priority Club points - 25,000 per night. Check out their web site www.hotelindigo(dot)com. It looks quite lovely. We haven't heard from her yet but if she didn't like it, I'm sure we would have!

We've been to London twice and I've always used orbitz or cheaptickets to find rooms. Off the top of my head I can't remember the names of the two hotels, they weren't chain ones. My criteria was that it had to be close to a tube station and near Picadilly Circus.

Have a great time! We absolutely adore London.

Well they are not luxurious, but they are clean and located close to tube stations.

My husband and I have had really good luck, and super cheap rooms at the EasyHotel Chain. Look them up online. Last time we even had a windowless room, but like I said it was clean and safe. I would gladly stay at them alone.

We have used a couple of them based on their availability and what/who we were seeing in London. Had good luck at all 3 or 4 that we have used over the past few years.

You might try Thistle Hotels. They are not cheap but are a good value and the locations are good, too. London is a wonderful place!! :thumbsup2

We went to London in 2009 and stayed at the Luna and Simone and LOVED it! It's almost a bed and breakfast but nice private rooms with large en suite bathrooms. They give you a key to the building and a key to your room and they cook breakfast in the morning!

It was REALLY highly rated on Trip Adviser at the time. And it was really reasonably priced. I haven't checked it recently. It is in Westminster and walking distance to everything!

Best wishes and have a WONDERFUL trip!

Traveled there many times for work and heading back this year for vacation. A great hotel, walking distance to the west end, Trafalgar Square, and darn there everything .... google up Charing cross. It used to be a Thistle now it's a Guoman hotel right on the strand and next to the Charing Cross train station. Nope you will not hear the trains but just central to all.

Sanctuary House Hotel--we were there last summer. It's above a pub, so there is close eating, but it is quiet. If you're alone, you might be comforted by the fact that it is in a very safe neighborhood--in fact, Scotland Yard backs up to it. It is also between 2 Tube Stations. When you step out, you can see Westminster Abbey about 2 blocks down the same street. Buckingham Palace is just across St. James Park. If you walk the opposite way from Westminster Abbey, there are phone booths, grocery stores, and.. . a McDonalds.

I'm also heading to London soon. Our first choice B&B was The Lime Tree, but it wasn't available for our entire stay, so we booked Luna & Simone. I'm glad to see another person here liked it. Both B&B's have exceptional ratings and are near Victoria Station.

We stayed at the Park Plaza Westminister Bridge right before our Disney Baltic cruise last July. It was a perfect location and only a couple of months old. It is less than a 5 minute walk to the London Eye and 2 blocks from Big Ben & the Parliament. Stores, bus stops and Tube stops (Waterloo and Westminister) were also close. We were in walking distance to Trafalgar Square and Westminister Abbey. We did the Big Red Bus tour from right outside the hotel (saved $ by pre ordering our tickets) and it included a walking tour to Buckingham palace from Trafalagar Square. One night we even walked back to the hotel from Picadilly Circus. It took about 25 minutes and was really beatiful along the way including passing the Prime Minister's home.

I go to England once a year and when I'm in London, I stay at a B&B in the Russell Square area (Bloomsbury). Our current favorite is the Thanet, but there are quite a few in the neighborhood. A friend is staying at the President on the north side of Russell Square next month. There is a great shopping area near the Russell Square station. Bloomsbury has a Waitrose (nice supermarket), a Carluccio's (great Italian restaurant - order the Cioccolata Fiorentina if you like hot chocolate), some really nice shops, and, if you're not averse to walking, you can get to Covent Garden in 15 minutes. It's also close to both the Piccadilly line (Russell Square - you can get there from the airport on one train) and Central line (Holborn). PM me if you want my list of things to do and places to go in London (warning - it's chocolate- and food-centric). When are you going?

Here's the link to the one we stayed in. Literally 5 minutes from Big Ben, London eye, and plenty of shops...Nothing fancy, and not a fancy price. Very clean and safe. We went as a family with small children and loved it!!

The location we stayed at:

They have numerous locations. See here:

So happy to see your post -- this is the hotal and location we were considering using last summer but our plans fell through. Hopefully it will happen sooner than later, and it's nice to know we should go with the same accomodations.

I'll take any chocolate-centric suggestions you have!!

I figure one of the benefits of going alone is that I can eat whatever I want, lol (and then walk it off while sightseeing).

I'm going over July 4th weekend - so pretty much the most expensive time there is, lol.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions!

Completely agree with this suggestion. Russell Square is really convenient, pleasant and has a lot of reasonably priced accommodations.

Generally speaking hotels in London are pricey - but there are some good budget options like premier inn and travelodge/ also maybe Ibis or Etap but even those can get expensive depending on the location - very basic mind you. But if it were me and I have traveled in London a lot on my own I'd book on hotwire or priceline - might get something a little bit better quality for the money. One I've been wanting to try to get on priceline is the Novotel Saint Pancras - you can check betterbidding.com to see what people are booking with hotwire and priceline. Look for access to public transport - and keep in mind 8 pounds a day may be the transportation budget - check the Oyster website to see what the daily cap is - I have a Oyster card I but to top off every London trip. May also want to check lastminutetravel.com see what is available. Enjoy!:) London is a great city for a lone woman traveler - no worries. Definitely see some shows while you are there - last trip I saw Oliver for like 20 pounds! Great show- amazing price!
